      Firing Up Your Metabolism
One of the keys to successful, sustainable weight loss is to keep your metabolism working at top speed, burning as many calories as possible. When you start to eat less, however, your metabolism will slow down in order to conserve energy. This is what causes the bane of every dieter's existence: the plateau. Every dieter encounters a plateau at some point in the weight-loss journey, and sometimes

Firing of Food Network host illustrates resume fraud
Cleveland restaurateur and Iron Chef Michael Symon is set to take over as the new host of the Food Network's Dinner: Impossible series this fall. Great news for Chef Symon and Cleveland in general, but what does this have to do with employment law? According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Food Network fired the show's prior host for resume fraud: Symon is stepping in at "Dinner: Impossible" after the St. Petersburg Times revealed in early February that original host Robert Irvine exaggerated a wee bit on his resume. Like that bit about cooking for England's royal family. And being a White House chef, among other things. Resume fraud is a big problem for employers that largely goes undetected. Some surveys show that perhaps as many as 30-40% of resumes contain intentional inaccuraci

Firing Back At The Club For Growth

Governor Huckabee’s position should be considered as one that saved Arkansans from huge tax increases. Let me put the situation in perspective. For over 20 years prior to the governor’s tenure, Arkansas paid for its nursing home program through a "negotiated" illegal class rate. The hammer was coming down on the entire program. Federal law requires a nexus between the rate and the cost of the care. Arkansas’ state government is required to operate with a balanced budget. For over 20 years the nursing home program survived with minuscule rate incre

Chinese Firing @ the Factory: Power to the People
Since I’ve been working here in Shenzhen, there have been a lot of people that have been fired. While I haven’t yet witnessed the firing processes in American companies (for myself), I think I have a good idea of how its handled and the necessary customs. In my experience, the Chinese process is…let’s just say, different. As I’m writing this my secretary is in the process of cleaning off her desk and gathering her personal belongings. The head of the R&D department just fired her at 8am on Monday right after she came in for work. To tell you the truth, I never really liked my secretary from the beginning. Although she was a smart girl and proficient in computer work, she was lazy and forgetful. It seemed like that she was always sitting at her desk (which is right in front of me), doing nothing while other people were running around. She had no initiative in doing anything. I personally would have never hired her (but our hiring process for my department sucks too). Fro

Well, if you are a Orioles' fan, today will not be a day forgotten for a while.Today, now more than ever, I know for sure the Baltimore Orioles are more screwed up than I ever realized. From the way the press conference this afternoon was held, to the way they treated the media covered the events at the Yard, to just the general mood of fans, things are not right with the team. From the looks of it, this team has no direction, no passion and seems to be completely lost.A few of the players spoke out at the Yard today, but most ignored the press.By the way, I watched the press conference again -- very surreal. It almost looked for a few moments that Mike Flanagan choked up and got emotional. It was even weirder that Dave Trombley was not even there to address the media.Furthermore, you have to read this blurb by Roch Kubatko, as the Orioles closed access to the clubhouse and the reporters had to try to track down players in the parking lot!!!"Meanwhile, the Orioles are keeping reporters

      AG investigating FAMU firing
The state Attorney General's Office is reviewing a 23-month-old case involving an endowed chair and a "ghost employee" at the Florida A&M University law school. Nearly two years ago, interim FAMU President Castell Bryant fired a high-powered Kentucky lawyer, Shirley Cunningham Jr., after Bryant said she found no evidence that he had done any work as an endowed chair at the law school. Cunningham had given FAMU $1-million for the chair and then, in a highly unusual arrangement, was appointed to the chair and given a $100,000-a-year salary. (Don't remember? Here's the original story.) Two months ago, the state Department of Financial Services concluded Bryant was right, and recommended FAMU take steps to recover nearly $200,000 for "salary and benefits not earned." FAMU trustees referred the matter to the Attorney General's Office, which began a review last week.Officials there are "in the process of gathering the relevant documents and conducting the legal research necessary

Bush Stands Firmly Behind Gonzales Despite New Documents Showing A.G. Knew Plan for Firing Attorneys
I wonder if Alberto Gonzales has started packing up his office yet? Historically when President Bush proclaims his support the loudest for an underling they are about to get thrown under the bus. I don't see any way that Gonzales is going to escape this fate. At this point whether or not the President has the constitutional power to hire and fire US Attorneys at will is becoming irrelevant. The apparent cover up or at least the denial of involvement from the AG and White House is becoming the real issue. Theres no way they shouldn't have realized that their relentless prosecution of Bill Clinton and his subsequent impeachment would just fade away from the kollektive Democrat memories. Even Democrats that don't particularly like the Clintons will still be smarting from the black eye their entire party received from the Republicans. My experience with liberals, at least online, is that they are almost universally petty, vindictive and have the memory of elephants, pun intended. Carol Lam: Prosecutor's Firing Was Urged During Probe
This is looking worse and worse for the Bush administration. The more they deny claims of the firings being retaliation for nor being good “loyal Bushies”, as Kyle Sampson once called the other US Attorneys, the more evidence turns up seeming to indicate that it is exactly that. The one thing I will say is that Carol Lam was rather well known here in So Cal because of a huge decline in illegal immigration prosecutions by her office. Over the last few years there has been a drop of over 90% in prosecutions. Now she has said publicly in response to criticism of her record that instead of prosecuting individuals she was going after the “Coyotes” which brought illegal's into the country in bulk. The simple fact is though her office wasn’t prosecuting much of anything immigration related. The number of Coyotes prosecuted also dropped in a similar manner over the last few years. But the Bush administration saying that the “performance reasons” Carol Lam was fired for were lack of pro

Don’t Stop With Firing the Secretary of the Army!
I’m dismayed daily when I hear reports that one or two or more of US troops have been killed and some far larger number have been wounded. If we focus on this at all, we focus on the deaths, we may drop a tear when we see funeral processions in our communities or see in newspapers those mesmerizing color photos of families and friends grieving at church services or burial sites. But what about all those tens of thousands of wounded? Out of sight; out of mind.Until a Washington Post series of articles that has lifted the curtain – and ending up, so far, with the firing of the Secretary of the Army, Francis J. Harvey. (See: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2007/02/21/LI2007022100671.html)“I am disappointed that some in the Army have not adequately appreciated the seriousness of the situation,” Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, said yesterday. He was described by the New York Times as “grim-faced” as he said that. Well should he be. The wounded who are ou

      FIRING SQUAD MISHAP
Three men, a Jamaican, a Trinidadian and a Barbadian were given death sentences and scheduled to be shot at dawn. The firing squad assembled and the Barbadian was the first to face them.He thought furiously how he could save his life, and as the command : "Ready, aim..." was given he shouted "Earthquake!". Terrified at such a natural disaster, the firing squad ran away and the Barbadian escaped. When the Trinidadian's turn came, after "Ready, aim..." he shouted "Hurricane!". Again the firing squad was terrified and ran away and he escaped. The Jamaican smiled as he was led to the execution spot; he was sure he would escape. As the command "Ready, aim..." was given, with a broad grin he shouted: "Fire!"
