      FINGERPRINT CLASSIFICATION
Large volumes of fingerprints are collected and stored everyday in a wide range of applications including forensics, access control, and driver license registration. An automatic recognition of people based on fingerprints requires that the input fingerprint be matched with a large number of fingerprints in a database (FBI database contains approximately 70 million fingerprints!). To reduce the search time and computational complexity, it is desirable to classify these fingerprints in an accurate and consistent manner so that the input fingerprint is required to be matched only with a subset of the fingerprints in the database.Fingerprint classification is a technique to assign a fingerprint into one of the several pre-specified types already established in the literature, which can provid

Fingerprint Readers On USB Memory Sticks No Match For Device Encryption
Heise Security is reporting that they’ve managed to bypass security in the form of fingerprint readers found on some USB memory sticks.  Such fingerprint readers are growing in popularity due to the increasing awareness for protecting confidential information and a way to easily remember passwords.  Fingerprints offer an ideal solution, or at least appear like one on the surface.   The hack requires the use of a freely available open source software.  Again, it affects only certain particular fingerprint readers found on USB flash drives, so it may not apply to the fingerprint reader on your USB drive, if you have one.  Heise’s recommendation is to either purchase a flash drive with a working fingerprint reader or, better yet, use a normal USB drive but encrypt

Japan to fingerprint and photograph all foreigners
Japan is to fingerprint and photograph foreigners entering the country from next month in an anti-terrorism policy that is stirring anger among foreign residents and human rights activists. "This will greatly contribute to preventing international terrorist activities on our soil," Immigration Bureau official Naoto Nikai said in a briefing on the system, which starts on November 20. Read full story In these modern times and with globalization I must say that I am against the plans by Japan to document all foreign citizens inside and outside the country. I thought the days of the Tokugawa shogunate were gone? With Japan's role as a global leader, it's sad that they have decided to treat all non-Japanese people as suspected terrorists.

Secure Data with the USB Fingerprint Reader
We all have data that we would rather keep from prying eyes, be it a dubious video downloaded from an equally dubious video site or the latest company accounts that make especially grim reading (which you fully intend to release only having secured alternative employment). Of course there are various methods of ensuring privacy available, from simply encrypting the files in a secured compressed folder to altogether more drastic methods - such as saving all the files to a particularly small USB flash drive before attaching said drive to the collar of Cuddles the Pit Bull Terrier. Alternatively you could rely on biometric encryption thanks to this Hyundai USB Fingerprint reader which utilises AES standard encryption and comes not only with the ability to secure files and folders but with a screen saver lock and Windows login and web locks. However, with this device costing a mere $25 (from this online retailer), and with similar systems having been hacked with something as simple as a
