Psychiatry Weekly 2008 Apr 21;3(15) Alexander B. Niculescu III, MD, PhD In the longstanding effort to improve diagnostic criteria for mood disorders, biologically-based criteria in particular are commanding the attention of researchers and clinicians. Recently, a team of investigators from the Indiana University School of Medicine, in collaboration with colleagues at Scripps Research Institute and UC San Diego, published a report detailing an investigation where blood biomarkers predicted low mood or high mood by noting changing patterns in the blood during each mood state. According to Dr Alexander B. Niculescu, who directed these studies, "these changes are at the level of gene expression, and they involve genes previously thought to act primarily in the brain." Market Research Findings And How You Can Make Sure They're Acted On
Five tips to keep costly market research from gathering dustI have a sneaking suspicion that the more a piece of market research costs, the less likely it is to actually be read. All around the world, market research carefully generated by government bodies, universities and private companies is propping up wobbly desks, mopping up spilt coffee and gathering dust in forgotten corners.Meanwhile killer competitive insights remain undiscovered by those that could turn them into profitable business decisions. The problem does not so much lie with the quality of the research, nor the competence of those that commissioned it. I believe the biggest make or break factor for the usefulness of any knowledge is how effectively it can be transferred out of the researchers' brains and into the brains of

Extraterrestrials have come a long way to purportedly share the friendly skies with us.UFOs and alien visitors are part of our culture-a far-out phenomenon when judged against those "low life" wonders Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. And after all those years, as the saying goes, UFOs remain a riddle inside a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Why so? For one, the field is fraught with hucksterism. It's also replete with blurry photos and awful video. But then there are also well-intentioned and puzzled witnesses [See Top 10 Alien Encounters Debunked].Scientifically speaking, are UFOs worth keeping an eye on?

      New findings on childhood obesity
New research has found that obese children are more likely to spend time watching television and have a mother who is overweight.   The finding came from Auckland researchers who tracked children from birth to seven years of age.   Nearly 600 children were part of the study, which looked at the factors causing childhood obesity.   The research reveals that obese 7-year-olds were also obese as preschoolers. Professor Ed Mitchell from the University of Auckland says that fat is being laid on very early on, and is not just puppy-fat that is going to disappear.   One significant factor found was the weight of the child's mother, although at this stage the importance is unclear.   The research found that mothers that were overweight were much more likely to have children that were as well.   Poor diet, genes and lack of exercise have all been attributed to childhood.

Controversial Findings about Flu Vaccines for the Elderly
The mortality benefits of giving elderly people the flu vaccine have been vastly overstated, according to a Review published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, October edition. Vaccinating people over 65 against influenza in developed countries is aimed at reducing the flu mortality burden. Dr Lone Simonsen, George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA and team say that vaccinating no-so-frail elderly people more frequently than their frail peers, plus the use of non-specific endpoints, such as all-cause mortality, are the reasons for this exaggeration. Our Brains Respond More Primitively As A Threat Approaches: Findings May Help In Understanding Anxiety-Related Disorders
Wellcome Trust scientists have identified for the first time how our brain's response changes the closer a threat gets. Using a "Pac Man"-like computer game where a volunteer is pursued by an artificial predator, the researchers showed that the fear response moves from the strategic areas of the brain towards more reactive responses as the artificial predator approaches. When faced with a threat, such as a large bear, humans, like other animals, alter their behaviour depending on whether the threat is close or distant. This is because different defence mechanisms are needed depending on whether, for example, the bear is fifty feet away, when being aware of its presence may be enough, or five feet away, when we might need to fight or run away.To investigate what happens in the brain in such a situation, researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL, London, created a game where subjects were chased through a maze by an artificial predator -- if caught, they would rece

Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Releases New Findings on Exposed Victims
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an organization dedicated to serving as the voice of asbestos victims, today announced that an increasing number of patients suffering from asbestos-related diseases are now younger than in previous reports. Case reports from the past three years reveal a new median age of 51 and nearly fifty percent of those are women. Anecdotal evidence suggests a changing profile of newly diagnosed patients, many of whom are under 40 years old, nearly forty percent of which have never worked with asbestos, but have environmental exposure. The Columbia University Mesothelioma Center in New York City reports similar findings. "The average age of our peritoneal mesothelioma patients is 51.7," said Dr. Robert N. Common Medical Findings in the Greyhound
The greyhound has a very unique physiology that many professionals attribute to their history as sighthounds and as a racing breed.  They have developed enlarged muscle mass, hemoconcentrated blood, lengthened carpal/tarsal and metacarpal/metatarsal bones, and a heightened sense of sight.  Here are a few of the more common ones that you should be aware of. 1.  Greyhounds normally have thyroid levels lower than other breeds. 2.  Blood work:  Greyhounds can have high normal BUN, creatinine and AST levels.  They can have low platelets.   They normally have a higher than normal number of red blood cells and a low normal number of white blood cells in their blood. 3.  They are exposed to many tick borne diseases while they are racing.  Maggie has Ehrlichia.  She was treated with a month’s worth of antibiotics and so far has shown no signs of being sick. 4.  Greyhounds are overly represented in cases of osteosarcoma.  I will touch more on this later as Caddy had OS and I
