If loving these ruffles and frills is wrong, I don’t want to be right. “fabrics interseason are interested in codes, which manifest themselves in individual and collective clothing patterns, in identity-generated values and their readability. the

These may be cool fabrics for summer, warmer ones for winter and others like natural fabrics, since some people can be allergic to synthetic fabric in some textiles. In general the heavier the fabric, the tighter the weave should be to ensure that the fabric will hang well. The looser the weave the more prone it is to environmental factors like heat and moisture which will mean that you can physically see your drapes rise and fall. The most common types of fabrics that are used for drapery are as follows: sheers and nets, most commonly synthetic, used for privacy.Casements, which are made from loosely woven textured yarns and also used for privacy.Prints, probably the most popular, these are generally made from tightly woven cotton or cotton polyester blends and are of medium weight and practical from most window treatment situations.Satins and jacquards, mostly for formal applications, heavy

The sad thing is that there are lots of teenagers stuck in the lands of ice and snow and these girls can only fantasize about lounging at the seaside or snorkeling alongside the kissing fish and seahorses that frolick in their underwater worlds swimming amongst the shipwrecks and coral reefs. The way that many teen girls weather the long winter months without falling into deep, dark despair is to decorate their bedrooms like a tropical paradise. Seahorse finials on the bedposts and lamps that are shaped like swimming seahorses with starfish accents match the tropical fish quilted on the comforters and duvet covers. Crypton Fabrics Totes by William Wegman
The sardonic humor of William Wegman shows us what we are in the temporal world, but because his actors are Weimaraners, so willing and amiable to his directives and whose blank stares allow us to project our subjective take, the effect is simultaneously cerebral and downright adorable. However, coming down to the least common denominator, we remember the dogs. For me, that would be his first and most famous, Man Ray (yes, named after the renowned Dadaist). My heart melted and trilled at bit when I saw these totes, which are generally available in most high-end pet accessory stores. Each ample tote sports a profile of one of his canines posed in the foreground against a circle, easily conjuring connotations to three dimensional silhouettes with the moon as the backdrop. Retro hues reminiscent of old-fashion Naugahyde are used in sage and olive greens, orange and milky brown and bordered with black leather. These measure 16″w x 17.5″h x 3″d, and they are available

Interior Design Article Part 4 - Making Fabrics Work for You
Color, as we have learnt is an important factor in interior decorating, added with fabric we start to create a stylish interior. Fabrics have many uses, some are purely aesthetic, while others are truly functional. Curtains are a functional use for fabric. Using Drapery as a window treatment reduces draughts, keeps the heat in the room (insulates the window), reduces noise in a room as well as the obvious good looks of curtain drapery in a space. Fabric is also used for upholstery on chairs and sofas. This is not only functional but has the added value of comfort, especially when seated, it also feels warm and looks inviting. Fabric can be used to create the style of an interior. I say English country cottage, and what do you immediately think of? Chintz, roses, soft pinks and greens, and creams. Fabric can independently create a style. 1970's? Bold geometric designs, with lime green, browns, orange and teal. Scottish? Tartan, checks, heavy wools. Nautical? Canvas, blue

Who would've ever dreamed that fruit print fabrics would migrate from kitchens to teen bedding? Any ideas on how to work with fruity teenage bedroom decorations? Is the tropical headdress of the Copa Cabana coming back? Will we be decorating with bowls of bananas, grapes and cherries? Strange and just a little disturbing. Blinds? Duck or hunting blinds? No; window blinds. Well who cares about window blinds? Pretty much anyone with windows in the home I would guess. I know that I certainly care about them as I live the desert country of Arizona; blinds are good. Oftentimes people think of the type of blinds one would see in an office environment or perhaps those that are on sliders to the patio in a backyard. They certainly are not a plain lot, to which I can attest as my wife seems to change them in our house at least twice, if not three times a year. As the site for Terry’s Fabrics point out in their roman blind section, blinds are not just modern, formal or only appropriate to period homes. Add the various fabrics available in the roman blind design; which consists of a simple look in the front that falls in a series of level folds to the sill and you have countless choices. Auto-snug clothing - really smart fabrics
It seems Philips is going into the fashion and textile business. First there was the ICD+ Jacket together with Levi, then the Lumalive textile display last September and now a really smart fabric. Philips shows us a way which gives hope that the fitting-room fiascos will become a thing of the past ….. if this concept ever forays into the world of fashion. The consumer electronics giant has come up with a concept to change the size, shape and style of clothes by weaving “muscle wires” into the fabric. The wires are made of shape-memory alloys that change length according to the small current passed through them. Here’s how it could work: you try on a special pair of Philips’ trousers, and connect up to a power source that changes the length of the wires in the fabric until the trousers have the correct waist size, inside leg and width. Then simply disconnect to try the trousers in exactly your size. Philips says the technique could also be used to correctl

Fabrics needing a pattern/design posted by fiberfan
I went stash exploring last weekend and found these fabrics. Unfortunately, they don't know what they want to be yet ;-) though the floral and the purple want to stay together. All are woven lightweight cottons or poly/cotton blends. The floral is 40" wide. I have a 1 1/4 yd piece and a 3 yd piece. The light purple is 60" wide. I have 3 1/2 yds. The navy on white print is 58" wide. I have 2 1/4 yds. I would appreciate any suggestions for what to make with these fabrics. I rarely wear pants and don't wear sleeveless tops, low necklines or dresses above the knee. Thanks! HELP! Seam Puckering, Silk/satin fabrics posted by songstress
Hi everyone! I am making a dress out of...I think Satin...it is probably a synthetic satin but it is shinny, medium weight with glitter on the top of the fabric. After sewing all the seams I noticed a very unsightly problem...all the seams have a slight puckering to it that I feel is very noticeable on the outside...the seams look wavy on the right side of the fabric. This is usually why I don't sew with this type of fabric but it is for a friend and she really wanted the dress out of this fabric. HELP! I really really really don't want to have to re-sew all the seams...is there any way to fix it without having to re-sew everything? I tried ironing the wrong side of the fabric and it made it a little better but there is still a wavy look to the seams. Please please help! Any suggestion would really help! Thanks!!!!Last post by babydoll at Sun 28 Oct 2007 06:44:01 AM Total posts: 14 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Shop for Loes Hinse at PatternReview.com

Baby Lock vs. Bernina, sewing thick fabrics posted by Momuvasoer
Hi, New to the board. My daughter is going into costume design and for Christmas/birthday we want to purchase her a good machine that will go to college with her and serve her well but without being passed the $750.00 range. Bernina seems to be a great machine from what I've read but I'm also drawn toward the Baby Lock line. On the surface, the Bernina Activa 220 and the Baby Lock Decorator's Choice seem to be what I would look at within my price range with Baby Lock having more features included. Now my question. The lady in the store seemed concerned that the Baby Lock may not be the best at sewing fabric that is thick as well as the Bernina machine. Working with costumes and the sometimes heavy fabric, I certainly don't want the machine to have a problem with that. I haven't been able to find a comparison on actual motor strength of the two. Anyone have experience in sewing thick heavy fabrics on a Baby Lock that is in my price range with no troubles or should I just l

Felting wool fabrics posted by jan zita
About three years ago, I took a weekend workshop from Jean Cacicedo in Berkeley. She was fearless in subjecting all sorts of woolen fabrics--knit, woven--to the ordeals of high-heat washing and drying. By the end of the weekend, most of us students were eager to toss any and every wool into the drink. I've been experimenting with a variety of wool fabrics, starting with yardage I've bought at Mill Ends (Saint Paul, Minn.) and a strictly local remnants store, comforted by the conviction that if my efforts fail, at least I won't have spent a lot on the experiments. Happily, they've worked very well so far. For example, yesterday I bought some really boring wool flannel ($6/yard, 60" wide)--that rather stiffish, ordinary kind of all-wool flannel--and after washing and drying it twice on high, I found that it had become supple and soft--primo fabric! My next step is going to be dry-felting some of these transformed fabrics. I'm hoping that we can discuss what has and hasn't worked

Which stitch (serger) to use to join two fabrics? posted by mendospot
I am sewing a vintage apron pattern and want to do an insertion strip of a contrasting fabric to the skirt. I have a serger but I just don't know which technique to use! Both fabrics are of the same weight (they are Michael Miller cotton fabrics--like a quilting fabric, I guess). The skirt is a large flower print and I'm making the pockets in a small dot print and want to insert a strip of the small dotted fabric too. I can't "see" how to do it. What would be a good decorative stitch? Would a thread showing on the right side be too busy? If I did a flatlock stitch, do I finish the fabric edges first? If so, how? Suggestions? If I can manage it, I'm going to attach a scan of the pattern--it is view 3 that I am making.Last post by lilyofthevalley at Wed 19 Dec 2007 04:27:56 PM Total posts: 2 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Shop for Textile Studio at PatternReview.com

Holes in knit fabrics posted by Tom P
I'm starting to sew with knit fabrics, and have purchased my first 5 pieces of knit fabric in the last month. Three of the five have had holes in them. Now, one of them was on eBay, so I can understand how I might get a second/remnant, whatever. There were two or three small holes (1/4in.) scattered around the 2yds that I bought, and a couple of white spots in the black. The other four pieces I got from Wazoodle, and two of them had holes. One has a small hole (1/4in.) about every six inches near the edge. It's not part of the selvage; these holes are about 1.5in into the piece. The other one has a big place where it was snagged, probably at the mill. So, one of these I can understand how it happened, but still. Is it common to find holes like these in knit fabrics? I can work ar

Help me date these fabrics posted by littlejazzbird
Hi! I bought those vintage fabrics on Ebay last year. They were parts of an estate sale. I'm really curious about the period they are from. 1- The pink one (with kind of ribbons) was sold to me as silk chiffon, but it's not silk. I don't know what it is since I'm not good with burn tests, but I'm absolutely sure it's not silk chiffon; it's still sheer but stiffer than silk chiffon, and the texture is not as soft too. My guess is it's from the 40's because of the swirl design, or ribbon-like design. Width is 45''. It doesn't feel like natural fibers, so what can it be? 2- I got the grayish/tealish one and the red one from a different seller than the one above. Those two are wonderfully soft silky rayons, I'm sure of that. The gray/green one is a bit sheer (on the picture you can see a l

Where can I learn more about picking out fabrics for my projects? posted by cutestcutie
I've gotten some wonderful suggestions here for good fabrics to start out with as a beginner, but I was wondering how exactly I can tell which fabrics are what when I'm at the fabric store. At the store, the fabric might say, for instance, that it is 100% cotton, but how can I tell what type of cotton it is exactly? As you can see I know practically nothing about fabrics.. is there a way I can learn to distinguish by look or feel one fabric type from another? By the way, sorry for hogging the board with all of my questions. I have 2 or 3 weeks free right now which I'm trying to take advantage of by learning as much about sewing as I can.. and with the help of this board I think I'm making decent progress! Thanks for all of your advice!Last post by littlejazzbird at Wed 07 May 2008 09:58
