A great debt is owed to the scientists on this list; all of them died or were injured in their pursuit of knowledge. The advances they have to science were extraordinary, and many of them paved the way for some of mankind’s greatest discoveries and inventions.

Psychologists know you have to be careful when you go poking around the human mind because you're never sure what you'll find there. A number of psychological experiments over the years have yielded terrifying conclusions about the subjects. Oh, we're not talking about the occasional psychopath who turns up. No, we're talking about you. The experiments speak for themselves: #5. The Asch Conformity Experiment (1953) The Setup: Solomon Asch wanted to run a series of studies that would document the power of conformity, for the purpose of depressing everyone who would ever read the results. Subjects were told that they would be taking part in a vision test, along with a handful of people. The participants were then shown pictures, and individually asked to answer very simple a

I began my experiments to become rich in 2001. ie.before seven years.MLM EXPERIMENTSFirst I tried an MLM (Multi Level Marketing) opportunity, which was dealing with marketing of websites. Actually, I was brought to a meeting hall by one of my friends. A presentation of the scheme was arranged there, and an upline leader(I believe that these people are the real assests of MLM companies) did it in style. The presentation was really exciting and motivational in nature. I pumped up myself and ran behind people to catch them as my downline. Even though I have some previous marketing experience too, I was unable to get join

Roselli is also working with experimenter Frederick Stormshak of Oregon State University (OSU), who has surgically inserted an estrogen implant in the bodies of these rams in an effort “to restore tissue levels of estrogen comparable to those of heterosexual rams and af
I haven't decided if I'm playing yet. So.. the current status is no.So, this morning I have been swamped with IMs... How did it go?Well, the good was that Aiden stayed asleep in his bed for several hours. I'd put a gate up at the end of the bedroom corridor and a 2nd gate in the open doorway of the master bedroom. And then daddy genes kicked in. Is it too cold in his room. Is he sleeping okay? What if the gate comes down? Will he fall down the kitchen stairs to the basement. That's right... he slept... I didn't.Somewhere between midnight and 1 I heard the crying. I suppose this is good because it would inevitably lead to me getting more sleep.I wandered into his room. He was sitting up in bed crying. The "Where is everyone? Why is it dark?" cry. I picked him up. He quickly went limp on my sh
According to Billboard, Chris Brown is READY to re-release his platinum-selling sophomore album 'Exclusive' in June 08, with more than a few surprises!

Recently I had the opportunity to guest drop for another Entrecarder for 7 days, in addition to my regular multiple account activities. This particular Entrecarder buys ads in addition to dropping cards and has achieved good results in the form of a high ranking in their category and in the community at large. Instead of Power Dropping my way through 300 cards a day, as I might do on my own accounts, I used multiple card dropping strategies to ensure that this Entrecarder got plenty of traffic. I've mentioned before that I'm not a fan of blindly return dropping from the Drops Inbox. It might be polite to do so, but if one is seeking to get ranked above their peers, being nice doesn't necessarily cut it. The trick is to figure out how often to return drop from one's Drop Inbox and on which

Skype is good! It lets us monitor our laboratory apparatus from afar. Share Skype's Peter Kalmström's post about sending SMS from Microsoft Excel through Skype was a gem of an idea.I always had data on spread sheets that needed to share, with my colleagues and myself at different locations. But basically we always needed a portion of the spreadsheet data but we always shred the whole spreadsheet, either via email, Google Docs and sometimes file sharing. But we always griped that we only needed a single line of data at most of the situations. It could be a research lab project that need to run constantly for 48 hours or more and spews out volumes of data. In between all these data, there is a line that reads the status of the apparatus (temperature, voltage/current and the general health

I read at John Chow's site how Google plans to take a few weeks to allow users to vote on search results. With this system, you as an individual could add, vote up, vote down, and remove individual Google results for various search queries. Unlike other voting systems like DIGG, however, your votes will only impact the results you see.
It's been said that were Google to allow your votes to impact the search results everybody sees, there'd be some way to abuse the system, and a whole new form of BlackHat SEO would emerge. Originally, I doubted Google would allow votes to impact the system as a whole. After all, if you clean up your own search results, who cares how other people's look, right?
But what if Google took all your votes, and began using them to tabulate Page Rank? A site aware of this could probably find large groups of people willing to vote on its behalf, artificially boosting its ratings. So even if the masses all vote on mostly helpful sites, the
The Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time They're not kidding. The experiments detailed here are really and truly bizarre. The faint of heart may want to drift off to less peculiar realms. But those interested in traversing the wild side of science should step right up. In this list from The Museum of Hoaxes, drugged elephants are on parade, bulls are manipulated by remote control, and more than one housewife unintentionally subjects herself to "beneficial brainwashing": "People like you and need you. You have confidence in yourself." Such notorious psychological trials as the Stanford Prison Experiment and Stanley Milgram's tests of the limits of human obedience both surface. (The limits rarely come.) And a duo representing the Cold War's little-known "surgical arms race" makes the top 20. The Russians produced two-headed dogs, the Americans retaliated by transplanting a monkey's head, and Dr. Frankenstein felt right at home.
Full of experimentations of all sorts, the Pictogame Labs offers a new way to have fun!As said in the page presentation, the games will be based on live data feeds like news, pictures, music and games. For now, two games based on a Flickr open API are available. The principle is fairly simple: as the pictures appear, you have to spot the odd one out like finding the picture of a boy among some 80 photos...you may tell yourself it's like looking for a needle in a haystack but no worries, it's not that hard!Of course there will be more games of the like in the future with videos, news, etc. so keep checking the Labs!Malika

Folks!I just could not take it when I read this particular letter sent by ‘Dog Lab Test’ and later published by MalaysiaKini on their news website yesterday. The situation highlighted by the sender really bothers me a lot. :-(Let me quote his letter in full here today. The letter said, quote:“My children are studying at the faculty of veterinary medicine in University Putra Malaysia (UPM) located in Serdang, Selangor. The faculty has been using young and healthy dogs for all kind of experimental and lab tests. Most of the dogs used are less than one-year old. (Some are pedigrees - perhaps they’re lost dogs but healthy in order to fulfill their requirements.)Each year, the post-graduate students are given an assignment topic of which these dogs would be used as experimental objects. It is learnt that they obtain the dogs from the local municipal council. These students are divided into groups and each group is given a young and healthy dog for experimental purposes. The dogs are
The patient in the video had his corpus callosum removed in order to stop his seizures due to epilepsy. The procedure prevented the hemispheres from communicating with one another in any way and caused a sort of 'split consciousness'. To reduce the severity of his seizures, Joe had the bridge between his left and right cerebral hemisphers (the corpus callosum) severed. As a result, his left and right brains no longer communicate through that pathway. Here's what happens as a result:
…especially when you’re doing them on your kid.
Isn’t that what parenting is all about? Experimenting on your children…just to see what happens…

For the past three days, Cara has decided that she doesn’t need a second nap.
So, she goes down for a nap around 10 am, wakes up around noon and she’s up until 8 pm.
She’s 10 months old; she needs more sleep than that! [I need her to need more sleep than that!]
Since she’s dragging ass by 5 pm, I decided that if she’s bound and determined to only take one nap, it should be later in the day. My plan was to keep her up until around noon and then put her down for a nap. That way, she would wake up around 2 or 2:30 and wouldn’t be a terror until bedtime.
Didn’t happen.
She changed the damn rules on me

As you may know, I’ve been experimenting with the hosting location of several of my websites over the last few months and indeed years.
To begin with I hosted mascamps.com in America basically because that’s where my earlier websites lived and it was handy to just add the new one to the existing account. Anyway, about a year after we got here the various Our Inns had started off on 1and1.co.uk basically because it was handier to have multiple domains in one account but only pay for one webspace account.
Anyway, come 2006 and I needed to upgrade the account to run the database version of the Inns sites. That meant, on 1and1, a move from £25/year to £10/month so I started shopping round and ended up plumping for godaddy in the USA. Snag was that almost immediately after the move, the site traffic started dropping. In fact it ended up dropping 90% before I figured that perhaps £10/month wasn’t too bad after all and, guess what?, well the traffic went up x10 in the two

Experiments in living that step us out of our normal life experience can be invaluable tools. I think they are the sorts of things that begin to help us question our current lifestyle. One Josh writes:
It’s a shame that as a culture we are so used to excess that we don’t even recognize it anymore.
And it’s a shame that I’ll probably wrestle with this decision for another month. The entire time talking about ethics and Jesus and taking the moral high road. Feel good about myself. And then break down and buy it.
I’m a hypocrite.
It’s an honest struggle and these words connect with a lot of us, as they are things we rarely even dare to think out loud or acknowledge. For Josh, it’s this sort of pondering that led him to give up this. I am so happy to see Josh make a decision like this because I really believe it will free him up to focus on and be willing to challenge other areas of his life and choices. I am excited about were this new freedom and balance will take

I read this article and I figured I need to republish this. Why? Because the moral decay that this society is experiencing didn't just happen, it is caused by people like Joel Becker. And unfortunately when you start digging and doing some research you find a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist at the bottom of most of the moral decay we have been going through in the last 100 years. I know these are harsh words and I am not giving you too many facts, you can find them for yourself, you can go and see CCHR.org.I Never Thought This Could Happenby James RobisonTeenagers at Boulder High were told to have sex with anyone and use drugs. "I am going to encourage you to have sex and encourage you to use drugs appropriately." That was the message preached by clinical psychologist Joel Becker at a recent mandatory high school assembly in Boulder, Colorado. Children as young as 14 sat captive in the audience while other school administrators listened in silent consent. (It is revealing to note that B

My blog is almost three months old, so it feels like a good time to review my experiences in the blogosphere thus far. Upon starting this blog, my initial goal was to figure out what it took to generate a modest presence in Google, Yahoo, Alexa, and Technorati and how to go about doing so; I undertook a few traffic generating experiments which I’ll now recap and comment upon. Going forward, my blog will change a little: there will be more original content (opinions, commentary, ideas, etc.), more personal content (i.e. stuff happening in my life), and more cool stuff I find around the web that make me laugh or go whoa! Conversely, you won’t see any link exchanges, participation in random blog lists, or contest entries.

I was wandering around Sainsbury's earlier in search of a sauce to go with the chicken I was planning on having for dinner when I suddenly decided I wanted to make a dish I haven't made in ages - cider chicken with tagliatelle. There were a couple of minor problems: 1) I couldn't remember exactly what was in it; and 2) I didn't really want to buy cider. Now, I could have just come home, checked the recipe and gone back again, but I decided I couldn't be bothered to do that so I would try to recall the ingredients as best I could and improvise with Appletiser rather than cider.Got home to discover that while I correctly remembered I needed butter and wholegrain mustard, I had forgotten I needed leeks and double cream. Improvised with onions in place of leeks, and semi-skimmed milk plus flour to thicken instead of the cream. Became slightly concerned by the fact that it didn't look at all like it used to when I made it previously, but then it wouldn't when I was working with Apple

This is a collection of experiments done by and for the UK Sky One TV programme ‘Brainiac’. It’s a great show presented by Richard Hammond (he of Top Gear and famous for that crash) and Jon Tickle from Big Brother.
These are the best of the Thermite experiments they did on the show, including putting it up against liquid nitrogen and using it to burn through a car (a French one at that).
Thermite is basically aluminum mixed with iron oxide, a simple enough mix you might think, but one which when combined produces an incredible amount of heat, as you can see from the clips above. It’s usually used for such things as welding train tracks together but obviously the bods at Brainiac had some better uses for it!
I’ll be sharing some more Brainiac clips in future so keep me bookmarked.

A thought experiment can include any deliberate application of the imagination with the aim of testing a theory. Einstein used thought experiments in developing the theory of relativity - he imagined he was sitting on a photon travelling at the speed of light - and the consequences that would have for perception. Nikola Tesla the inventor who in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries discovered and designed much of the technology that we take for granted today (accumulating over 700 patents on the way) used a sophisticated form of thought experiment. Before building a machine in his laboratory he would construct in his imagination, run it and see if it developed any problems or unanticipated effects. You can choose to think of NLP's presuppositions as thought experiments. Also 'as if' frame statements can serve as thought experiments. You can ask what would it be like if .... I've described a few thought experiments in the posts below. Try them out if you like, and you can wri
