The exhaust system’s job is to carry and expel waste gases from the engine. A good exhaust system also reduces noise output and boosts performance as well. Companies like Gibson Performance, HKS, Greddy, 5Zigen, Fujitsubo, Tanabe, Sebring and Blitzs, design their exhaust systems for performance and to produce the nice rumbling sound that car enthusiasts enjoy while still complying with the legal

BMW working on exhaust generator, nixes ethanol.
Cars are great wasters. Of all the energy stored in the fuel, only a third is used to propel the car and run its systems. The rest is lost in heat from the engine and the exhaust system. One way of getting more bang for the fuel buck could be the exhaust powered generator developed by British Foresight Motors that we posted on earlier. By using engine exhausts to power the car's generator the engi

      Exhaust Fans, Kind of Vented
The photo below left is an example of the way some people vent exhaust fans from bathrooms, laundry rooms or even range hoods. They duct the fan to the attic, but instead of having a proper hood on the roof, they tie the duct in the general vicinity of a roof vent. One problem is that, often the screens on the roof vent clog with crud. The other problem is that, since the duct does not go out, then at least some of the steam and moisture is being dissipated into the attic. The photo to the right is not from the same house, but an example of the look of the wood in an attic that has moisture problems. Sometimes it can be hard to ascertain what is the result of a roof leak and what is the result of high humidity. One tip is to look to see how widespread the moisture is. A leak tends to be mo

Diesel exhaust particulates stress the brain
If the smell of diesel exhaust isn't enough to make you avoid getting a lungful, new research now shows that even a short exposure to the fumes can affect your brain. A study published in the journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology reveals that an hour of sniffing exhaust induces a stress response in the brain. Previous studies have already suggested that very fine particulate matter - nanoparticles - breathed in with polluted air can end up in the brain. But this is the first time that scientists have demonstrated that inhalation actually alters brain activity. Ten volunteers spent one hour in a room filled with either clean air or exhaust from a diesel engine. They were wired up to an electroencephalograph (EEG) which records the electrical signals of the brain, and their brain waves were

You've probably seen the Fast and Furious and thought, "Dang, those cars are sweet!" But not all parts are created equal. Start by identifying your goals and expectations. Also, think about the long run. You might save a few bucks now by going with a new muffler, but if you pay a little more you can add a full exhaust and really see results. I suggest you start by making a list of a few parts you are considering. Then research which ones work best for your vehicle and which order you would like to add them. Lastly, it is worth it to shop around online. Spending half an hour online comparing a few shops can save you a few hundred bucks. This article will bring you up to speed on exhaust headers.1. Ask TundraHeadquarters: Dual vs Single Exhaust Question
Chris writes: “Thanks for the great info regarding the Tundra 5.7L exhaust. I have a question though. The local muffler shops offer dual in dual out exhaust for the Tundra, but they use smaller crush bent 2.25″ pipes for the exhaust. Will the smaller pipes hurt the performance of my truck or break even with the OEM 3″ exhaust? I want the dual exhaust sound, but not at the expense of performance, so should I just replace the stock muffler and keep the stock single 3″ exhaust pipe or dual it out with a couple of smaller 2.25″ pipes?” Good question. Most muffler shops will tell you that pipe size isn’t nearly as important as pipe configuration and layout, but I don’t see any reason why you can’t have both. Smaller pipes increase back pressure, but that can be alleviated somewhat by the use of a louder muffler. But, it’s a very inexact science. Generally speaking, you should try to match the factory pipe size whenever possible. As far as single v

Toyota Tundra TRD Dual Exhaust Product Review
A lot of new Tundra owners upgrade their exhaust systems. In fact, it’s probably the most popular accessory that people add to their new trucks. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) there are literally HUNDREDS of options. Big names like Borla, Flowmaster, Gibson, and TRD all offer kits for the new Tundra. Of course, if you don’t want to spend that kind of money, or if you like the idea of a custom kit, you can visit your local muffler shop and talk to the experts, and you can even order parts on the internet and install them yourself. Like we said, LOTS of choices. However a lot of people like to go as “factory” as possible when choosing accessories, and we can certainly understand why. First of all, it’s very easy. If you’ve bought a Tundra, chances are you trust Toyota to make a good product. You can rest assured the TRD exhaust system is a good choice. Secondly a lot of people like factory-backed accessories because the
