In reading the casual comments people make online in reaction to a local New York news story (on the NYT website, if I can remember correctly), I've noticed that on a few occasions someone will write something like the following: "I just want everything to get back to normal so I can enjoy my coffee and bagel and listen to the .....fill-in-the-blank WNYC radio program." I understand this. The radi

I have just returned from BookExpo America (BEA), the book industry’s annual event held this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where I went to promote the debut of my book, Inner Architect: How to Build the Life You Were Designed to Live. I expected the experience to be one of value, learning, [...]
Few countries could be more different to our way of life than Japan. The distinctive language, interesting food and instantly recognizable décor gives westerners on holiday to Japan an experience which cannot be rivalled. It's said that the best time to visit Japan is either April or November, as this is when the cherry blossoms for which Japan is famous are in full bloom. Times to be avoided if p

Developed by years of backpacking and inspired less by my father’s hand-me-down survival training techniques than by Batman’s utility belt, my habit is to go everywhere with the most essential supplies. Everywhere. A bike ride through my neighbourhood is as well stocked against disaster as a trek along the Allegheny Trail.
Of course, “essential” is in the eye of the beholder. But I like to be prepared for any minor inconvenience. “Roughing it” doesn’t have to mean enduring a broken fingernail, does it? Sure, I fall just a bit on the fastidious side, but my Inspector Gadgetism has occasionally come to the aid of a fellow traveller in need.
My inventory is categorized, which helps me retrieve things quicker and replenish supplies more efficiently. If you shop for the smallest gadgets for your own utility belt (I actually use several tiny cloth zipper bags that I can toss into a backpack, fanny pack or suitcase), you’ll be amazed at how much space you can save. Here’s w
Have you ever changed your mind in a big way? In a way that fundamentally shifted how you see yourself, your friends and family, your livelihood, even your core relationship to the world in which you live? Maybe it was a change you sought - the product of a lengthy process - or a change that was thrust upon you in a time of transition: a sudden illness, a failed relationship, the death of a loved one,or an unplanned change in career. In each case you may have examined your deepest assumptions about how to live or what has meaning for you.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In 1998, the US General Social Survey found that 39 percent of those polled have had a spiritual or religious experience that changed their lives. In their book Quantum Change, William Miller and Janet C’deBaca describe sudden, dramatic, and permanent shifts in behavior, motivations, values, and ways of being - lightning-strike instants of transformation. Such moments often carry the signature of

Privacy under pressure in EuropeBy Bob SherwoodPrivacy campaigners claim it is the realisation of a Big Brother state, while some law enforcers insist it is a necessary response to the growing global threat of terrorism. For telecommunications groups and internet services providers, though, the prospect of Europe-wide laws requiring them to retain, and hand over, electronic communications data is a potential headache and extra cost burden.A European directive is in preparation that will require the providers of publicly available communications services to retain details of fixed-line, mobile phone and e-mail communications for at least six months, and possibly up to two years. It is a requirement that even the US has not imposed in its war on terror.Think and you'll have the problem of disposal of ideas...
