Nobody questions the fact that healthcare is a confusing profession. Doctors and nurses seem to speak in foreign tongues; medicines have names and ingredients that are not even pronounceable; more and more news comes out every day about diseases and conditions that seem to contradict each other. If doctors must devote 12 years of higher [...]

When word got out in Camden, New Jersey, about a wild new twist on the local heroin supply, users flocked to get a taste of the action. What they went looking for was a high that claimed to be as good – or better – than that fateful first time that had them hooked. What they found, however, was a cocktail so lethal that many users were found dead before they could even finish shooting up.

Its also a fact that children and adults tend to snack more while watching tv. We are not really conscious of our consumption while watching tv. From The Autoimmune Epidemic: Bodies Gone Haywire in a World Out of Balance : Autoimmune diseases are the eighth leading cause of death among women, shortening the average patient's lifespan by fifteen years. Not surprisingly, the economic burden is staggering: autoimmune diseases represent a yearly health-care burden of more than $120 billion, compared to the yearly health-care burden of $70 billion for direct medical costs for cancer. To underscore these numbers, consider: while 2.2 million women are living with breast cancer and 7.2 million women have coronary disease, an estimated 9.8 million women are afflicted with one of the seven more common autoimmune diseases: lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseas

An Interesting Blog Post from Healthy Life. It's exactly what Iowa Avenue promotes:
You would have to have been living under a rock for the past 10 years to not know Australia has a weight problem. You may be overweight yourself, or a member of your household, in fact your child may even be overweight.
The incidence of obesity in Australia is growing at a shocking rate. In a Medical Journal of Australia study in 2000, it was found that of over 11,000 people who had their measurements taken, 60% of them were overweight or obese. That's a lot of fat people.
Why is it so?
There are only two reasons why a person is overweight.
1.) They eat too much.
2.) They move too little.
The worst thing you can do is kid yourself that you have extenuating circumstances, and that neither of the above
We are all aware of the growing obese epidemic that is presently a serious health problem in many parts of the world. We hear it on the news and we see it all around us in our own lives and of those we know. In the United States alone the problem is growing at an overwhelming rate.True genetics contribute to obesity, however, the rate at which this problem is increasing shows that environmental factors and how we chooses to live our lives play a significant role. Obesity leads to serious health risks. Serious health risks and conditions reduce your chances of reaching your full potential in life. Here are some obesity statistics. According to the World Health organization, global obesity affects more than 1 billion adults. Childhood obesity is also a serious concern. There is an estimated 2
I have been hit hard by the flu that is going around and it has kicked my ass! I just finished a 4 day trip on friday and I am sure I was exposed to it by one of the passengers. I am a germ freak and constantly wash my hands and never touch my face when I am flying. I am a mess, I have a sore throat, my temperature ranges from 100 to 102.5. This started saturday night with a cough and by yesterday was in full swing. I am either freezing or burning up and every muscle and hair follicle aches. No appetite and no energy at all. It was an effort just to shower yesterday. I am going to call my Doctor this am and see if he will call in a RX for Tamiflu. Will update when I feel better.
(This is a continuation of part one from yesterday)Last night got a little better for me. The coughing was still there, but not as bad. In fact, the coughing is still here right now as I write this. The muscle aches have pretty much resolved. And, to be honest, this was the main symptom that was bothering me. The headache and sore throat are continuing to improve. It's a good thing, because I'm on call tomorrow and the weekend coming up.As I was doing more research this weekend, I found this article from the Associated Press from February 15th saying that this year's flu vaccine is effective for only 40% of this year's flu viruses.Infections from an unexpected strain have been booming, and now are the main agent behind most of the nation's lab-confirmed flu cases, said Dr. Joe Bresee, the

Each year thousands of dogs suffer and die from accidental ingestion of common household products that are poisonous to dogs. Some of these products are houseplants, common foods, medications, pesticides and cleaning products. You have to dog-proof against your dog's natural instincts.Your dog is genetically wired to investigate a new area or an area that he does not frequent. This ritual revolves around your dog nosing around, smelling and quickly eating what he discovers. If your dog does this in your garage or workroom, he can sniff, drink or walk through a wide variety of toxic substances. Your dog can be a victim of chemical poisoning if licks off a toxic substance from his fur, eats poisoned vermin, inhales toxic fumes or absorbs a considerable amount of a chemical through his skin,
Mastocytic enterocolitis is a new entity that has been described more recently as a condition characterized by increase mast cells of 20 or more per high-powered field in the duodenum or colon. Jakate et al. described 47 patients with intractable diarrhea and abdominal pain without other cause who had elevated mast cell numbers in intestinal biopsies and responded to therapy directed at mast cells. The patients generally met criteria for diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Normal subjects had much lower levels of mast cells of an average of 12 per HPF. Until recently this condition was missed due to lack of ability to see mast cells on biopsies in the background of normal cells. However, commercially available special stains utilizing immunohistochemistry for the enzyme t
Asbestos is a general term applied to certain fibrous minerals long popular for their thermal resistance, tensile strength, and acoustic insulation properties. Asbestos minerals are divided into two groups: serpentine and amphibole. Only one type of asbestos is derived from serpentine minerals: chrysotile, also known as white asbestos. Amphibole minerals include five asbestos species: amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. Two of these are the most commercially valuableforms: amosite, or brown asbestos, and crocidolite, or blue asbestos.More than 30 million tons of asbestos in its various forms have been mined in the past century. Asbestos is one of the most pervasive environmental hazards in the world, present in more than 3,000 manufactured products. All forms of
20.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. And another 6.2 million have the disease, but go undiagnosed. The number of U.S. diabetes cases is expected to rise to 30.3 million by 2030.
When left untreated or not managed well, the disease can lead to peripheral neuropathy, which can in turn lead to foot deformities and eventual amputation.
Every single day, doctors perform 230 amputations in the United States -- almost 84,000 each year. And more than 60 percent of these amputations are caused by diabetes.
Those diagnosed with diabetes at a young age must be especially cautious, because the longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to lose a limb.

Eddie, 7, has a strange habit of sticking his shirt in his mouth and sucking on it.Both were diagnosed with a form of autism. Groups advocating more research money call autism "the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States."Indeed, doctors are concerned there are even more cases out there, unrecognized: The American Academy of Pediatrics last week stressed the importance of screening every kid — twice — for autism by age 2.But many experts believe these unsociable behaviors were just about as common 30 or 40 yea

Recently there has been much media speculation about the supposed obesity epidemic plaguing the UK. Jane Feinmann of the Independent interviewed Professor Patrick Basham to get to the fact in this argument. He says there is no real evidence to back up the claims. The claim, which states that half of the British population will be obese in 25 years time, makes many assumptions which have yet to be confirmed as fact. For example every overweight child will have to become an overweight adult and every overweight adult will have to progress to obesity for the figures to be true. There has been no research to prove this is the case.So what about the adults that will all become obese? In 1997 the BMI classification of being overweight was changed from 27 to 25. Overnight millions of people previously classed as normal suddenly sat in the overweight category, and based on the epidemic claim they will all become obese. So although it is true that Body Mass Index statistics show a significant in
by Archana SaratThe US Epidemic of Asbestos deaths Asbestos, a wonder fibrous mineral, is fire resistant, chemical resistant and highly flexible. However, this wonderful substance also causes innumerable diseases like mesothelioma, asbestosis, fibrosis, asbestos warts and so on. The deaths due to asbestos are becoming an epidemic in the US. More than 10000 people are succumbing to asbestos related diseases every year. The mining, manufacture and use of asbestos create a lot of asbestos dust and asbestos fibers are released into the atmosphere. The asbestos fibers are light in weight and invisible to the naked eye. Thus, they get airborne and are easily inhaled by the people. Thus, they enter the human body through the nose or mouth. Even a single fiber is enough to cause an asbestos related disease. When this fiber comes in contact with the mesothelium lining of the body organs like lungs, abdomen and heart, it makes the mesothelium cells to act abnormally. They start to
On Saturday afternoon, September 29th, 2007, the cable television channel Nickelodeon showed nothing for three hours to celebrate “Worldwide Day of Play”, encouraging children to get off the couch and be active. The “Worldwide Day of Play” is part of Nickelodeon’s “Let’s Just Play” campaign, in partner with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, to encourage kids to participate in active, healthy and playful lifestyles. The goal of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is to create a new generation of healthy Americans by addressing one of the nation’s leading public health threats — childhood obesity.
So it should be simple, right? Don’t let kids spend so much time in front of the television … get them to be more active and they won’t be overweight. Or is there more to it? Let’s explore some of the science.
The results of a study on television viewing and body weight in children earlier this year

Don't be fooled for a second. This game is a mess. The kind of mess you don't even try to clean or sort out. You just leave it. Like when your dog takes a shit on the green of a park when it's not supposed to. But instead of using a doodie bag to pick it up and put it in the dog doodie bin, you just walk off and leave it. I'll be posting a review of it later this evening, explaining why this game is so bad. So hold onto your Wii points until then.Tags: Gaming, Rubbish, Sega, Shit, Streets of rage 3, Video, Virtual console, Wii
Are you dealing with frustration, anger or disbelief about delays in diagnosis or lack of belief of the role of food in illness or health?Daily I hear stories of frustration, anger, or disbelief about the lack of understanding or appreciation of the role of food and the gut in health. In the Celiac community and literature delays of diagnosis of Celiac disease in adults are known to average between eleven and thirteen years. Many children have diagnoses delayed for years and some are missed completely until after adolescence when additional growth is not possible or in early adulthood when inability to get pregnant or multiple miscarriages have already occurred. The epidemic of chronic illnesses linked to food and the gut remain unrecognized. Many other people suffer from chronic fatigue, gas and bloating, joint aches, mental fogginess or onset of irreversible autoimmune diseases. Many people just feel poorly and don’t know why. Some believe they found a link between food and their p

Obesity has become a global pandemic affecting the lives and health of millions of people, according to the World Health Organization. It is an accelerating social problem in industrialized countries and is also growing in the former colonial world.
Obesity is very often defined as an eating disorder. However, it is not a simple condition of eating too much. Health experts believe that obesity is a serious and chronic disease prevalent in today’s society.
As the “obesity epidemic” increases, so is the number of people that suffers from it. Approximately 300,000 adult deaths in the United States alone each year are directly attributable to unhealthy dietary habits and physical inactivity or sedentary behavior or obesity. In the United States alone, nearly one third of the adult population is obese. In the Europe, they have a similar encounter of the disease. An astonishing 58 per cent of Britain’s adult population is considered overweight or obese, a report published in Eng

Teens abortion has been declining over the last several decades. In the 1970s, the rate of teens abortion went up, but this rate stabilized in the 1980s. The rate of teens abortion was about 26.5 in 1000 teenagers as of 1990, but this was reduced by 45% to only 14.5 per 1000 teens in 2000.
The incidence of a teens abortion depends greatly on their race. A teen who is black is more likely to have an abortion than a white teen or a Hispanic teen. There are 14.8 abortions per 1000 white teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19, and 30.3 per 1000 Hispanic teens. However, there are 57.4 abortions per 1000 black teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19.
The older a teenager gets, the more likely she is to have an abortion if she becomes pregnant unexpectedly. 14.5 per 1000 teens between the ages of 15 and 17 have an abortion. Only 0.9 per 1000 teens under the age of 15 have an abortion. But a who
One of the more vexing medical mysteries to have surfaced in recent years is the startling and inexplicable rise in food allergies currently being seen in the western world. As medical offices and emergency rooms increasingly fill with adults and children suffering reactions to common foods, researchers are scratching their heads over the cause. Some in the scientific community, however, believe the alarming increase in food allergies can be traced to the public’s growing exposure to genetically modified foods.

Brazilian and Indian dengue cartoonsLatest reports from the Honduran government state the current official count of classic dengue fever cases is 7,715, an increase of almost 1,700 cases since the previous week. New cases of the classic strains had been averaging about 1,000 per week previously.Confirmed cases of the potential fatal dengue hemorragico increased a staggering 100 to a total of 397, and the death toll increased by one to a total of six fatalities.La Prensa reported: "The reported numbers contradict the version of the authorities, who have said the epidemic "has stabilized." In spite of the statistics, the Secretary of Health has refused to increase the level of alert that was declared weeks ago." In an article in the weekly Ceibeño section of La Prensa, it was noted that the "Asian Tiger" mosquito, Aedes albopictus, was first noted in the La Ceiba area in the first months of 2006. It is considered more aggressive, more epidemic, more tolerant of low temperatures, harder
In the first place, such generalisations are often backed by little substantiated data. Some studies have found that the prevalence of obesity among children is directly related to the hours of television viewed, for example, but other studies have failed to establish a correlation.More fundamentally, these observations ignore the economic and social driving forces behind the changes in diet and lifestyle—including the profits generated by the food and entertainment industries—and the intense pressures caused by increasing working hours and declining living standards for the majority of working people.Obesity can also lower the life expectancy of individuals. In addition to this, obese people are increasing their susceptibility and risks to a number of diseases directly related to obesity. This includes: type 2 (adult onset) diabetes; high blood pressure; stroke; heart attack; heart failure; cancer such as cancer of the colon or rectum; gallstones; g
An astonishing 58 per cent of Britain’s adult population is considered
Aedes aegypti mosquitoDengue fever is a viral disease which affects more than 100 million people each year in tropical and subtropical areas. It is caused by a bite from an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, a day biting mosquito, which prefers to be indoors and is likely to bite the feet or ankles. Dengue is also less commonly caused by the Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger. The mosquitoes become infected when they bite an infected person. Dengue cannot be transmitted person to person.Dengue is widespread in much the same areas where malaria is prevalent. The dengue mosquito can be identified by the white stripes on its black legs.La Prensa has been reporting a dengue epidemic in Honduras for several weeks now. In the first 6 months of 2007, more than 6,000 cases of dengue classico have been reported, primarily in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro, and Puerto Cortés. That figure is almost double the number of cases reported in 2006. Keep in mind, though, that many people can

New estimates, presented at a recent Alzheimer's Association conference in Washington, paints a tragic picture for the future of our brains. Currently, more than 26 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's disease, and the forecasters project this number to quadruple by 2050. At that rate, one in 85 people will have the brain-destroying disease in 40 years, researchers from Johns Hopkins University conclude. Asia will be hit the hardest, as their society already has almost half, or 12.6 million, cases of Alzheimer's. The United States is projected to reach approximately 8.8 million by 2050, compared to our current 5 million.Naturally, the pharmaceutical cartels are scrambling to find patent solutions to this growing problem, but few seem to focus on where the real problems lie: in the mercury they still vaccinate children with and the mercury fillings in your teeth. Trace amounts of mercury has already been found to cause the type of damage to nerves that is characteristic of the d
Microwaves may have “kick-started” the obesity epidemic, according to a UK scientist who has linked rising obesity rates to the rapid spread of microwave ownership. In 1980, prior to the microwave-oven craze that began in 1984, obesity rates were just 8 percent for women and 6 percent for men. By 2004, obesity rates skyrocketed to 24 percent of men and women.Obesity rates began rising between 1984 and 1987, according to the scientist, around the same time that microwave ovens reached the mainstream. What do microwaves have to do with obesity? They allow us to prepare meals much fasterThey spawned the creation of instant microwaveable “ready meals”They were introduced just as food became cheaperThe microwave theory is one of three being debated at the UK’s Cheltenham Science Festival. The other two? The rise of the supermarket and the end of World War II (which ended food rationing).Microwaves clearly can be tempting devices for those looking to save some time in the kitchen and

The insurance council have just released disturbing figures for car burglary or theft from vehicles. The council reported 50 000 claims for losses or damage to parked cars caused by thieves breaking into vehicles in the last year. Insurance firms believe that this figure could be much higher as many crimes go unreported.
Wellington police have reported a epidemic in recent months with an average of 10 cars targeted in the city every day. Once again Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee claims that this figure is lower than the actual as these crimes often go unreported In the past week alone 88 break-ins were reported to local police.
McKee said many motorists are unwittingly encouraging thieves by leaving items in their cars in plain view. “Theft from vehicles is an opportunistic crime,” he said.
“Thieves only target cars that have got property that’s visible inside.”
The insurance council is warning vehicle owners that premiums will go up to cover the
Getting eight hours' sleep a night has long been seen as one of the keys to a healthy and happy life. But for most of us the figure is little more than an ideal, with the average worker losing two and a half years of sleep over the course of their career, according to a survey. In fact, the average working adult loses just over ten hours' sleep every week, which adds up to more than one complete night's rest. That adds up to 520 hours over a year or 23,140 hours (2.5 years) over the average working lifetime.Only 3 per cent of professionals get their eight hours every night of the working week, the study found.Company directors are the most sleep-deprived of all, with 8 per cent getting under four hours of rest per night, according to Travelodge's 2007 sleep study. The budget hotel chain surveyed more than 5,200 individuals from 30 different careers to discover more about how work affects rest. The majority of those questioned were getting fewer than the recommended eight hours every nig

2007: “It is impossible to argue that an unconditional timetable for retreat could serve the security interests of the United States.”

Last month: The Rev. Al Sharpton said Imus should not be “let off the hook” for his racially charged comments about the team and should be fired no matter what he says to defend himself.
This one is pretty questionable, judge for yourself.

Yesterday: “It is time to quit the gamesmanship and the partisan politics,” said Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.). “We have been through a meaningless maneuver that everybody knows was never going to become law. Now, can we get over that and come to a conclusion?
While Lott was Senate Majority leader during Clinton’s presidency he helped p
If you haven’t heard by now, honeybee colonies across the USA are collapsing - and with the collapse of honeybees comes not only the loss of sweet honey for bread and tea, but also a huge loss for agriculture…
Stay tuned and I’ll show how honeybees relate to the law of abundance but for now please swing over to Bee Colony Collapse Disorder - Where is it Heading?
Honeybees are crucial to our existence, without honeybees we can’t pollinate our crops, without pollination not only do we go hungry so does the livestock we feed on as well, and eventually we’re talking a famine of mass proportions.
In life we have honeybees as well - these are people who lift us up, they can be people in your life, mere acquaintances who’ve made an impression in the small amount of time they’ve spent or they can be people you’ve only read about, or learned of through other means. They could be a teacher who’s message still strikes your core even today, y
What is going on with obesity? For a long time now I have been walking around thinking that our modern society has some serious negative consequences in terms of diet. Our evolved preference for foods rich in fat and sugars together with fast food chains and supermarkets which put the candy where you cannot avoid it, should naturally result in an increased consumption of such foods and in consequence more obesity. Indeed this seems to be the case. Since the 1970s obesity levels have been steadily rising. However, the interesting question to ask is "what effects this increase in the average BMI (body mass index) has on our health?" When I lived in California I was constantly exposed to commercials in which you would view pictures from a childhood where the protagonist ate way to much sweet stuff. Following these pictures a man would say something like, because of what I ate in my childhood my life has been shortened by five years. I believed this, just like I believed that obesity was i
It is documented that Australia had the highest per capita use of asbestos in the world from the 1950's until the 1970's. As a tragic consequence, Australia now has the highest per capita incidence of mesothelioma in the world. With more than 500 Australians contracting mesothelioma per year, it is estimated that up to 18,000 Australians will die from this asbestos related cancer by the year 2020. Despite the growing awareness of the dangers of asbestos, there are many people who have not heard of Mesothelioma. This asbestos related cancer is defined as: a malignant spreading tumor of the mesothelium of the pleura, pericardium, or peritoneum, arising form the inhalation of asbestos fibers. One of the most baffling and frightening known facts concerning Mesothelioma is that many years may pass, between inhalation of asbestos dust and its deadly legacy of disease; it is not uncommon for four decades or more to pass before symptoms due to asbestos dust inhalation become apparent. In
In a generation, diabetes has had a six-fold increase. In 1985 there were an estimated 30 million people with diabetes. Today diabetes affects more than 230 million people, almost 6% of the world's adult population. The number of people living with diabetes is expected to grow to 350 million in less than 20 years if action IS NOT TAKEN.
I took a look at a handful of pricing metrics for Orange County and I have to say that even as a died-in-the-wool housing bear, I was pretty shocked by what I found. Let’s start with our three key metrics:% of ZIPs with median price down year on year: 77.3%% of ZIPs with median price down from 2006 median: 80.0%% of ZIPs with price per square foot down: 62.7%.Astounding. Fully four in five ZIPs show price declines between February and all of 2006 and nearly that number on a year on year basis. Four-in-five. I can remember not long ago when that number was closer to two in five. Things certainly have changed.Looking at the data another way, fully 92% of OC ZIPs showed weakness in at least one of the three above metrics, with five lonely ZIPs having been spared the from pricing contagion: Laguna Beach’s 92651, Trabuco Canyon’s 92679 , Fullerton’s 92835, Newport Beach's 92660 and Villa Park’s 92861. If you don’t live in one of those four ZIPs, PRICES IN YOUR AREA ARE FALLING
It seems that Bush’s plan to help stop AIDS in Africa is failing, due to restrictive spending and his conservative beliefs. This report says that it could be his religious views on abstinence that hinder the ability to get this epidemic stopped. Read more here. The report was conducted over the last year by The Center for Public Integrity and is aptly titled “Divine Intervention”.
UPDATE: I read this post about 20 minutes after posting and realized it is a downer that just complains about someone I have never met. Though Bush may be as Danny Davito says, a numb-nut, I haven’t met him and don’t know why he fails to act in ways I think he should. So in addition to my complaint I offer this - lets write our congresspeople and senators and tell them that Aids in Africa is exteremly important to us and we want to see more done.
