      The Hidden Costs of Heterogeneous Operating System Environments
      Often we praise the advantages of a heterogeneous operating system environment to support multi-tier business applications and IT services. We can pick the best operating system for each component of the software infrastructure stack. We have better security, because we are using different operating systems for different components of our application. We manage costs better, [...]

      Is it true that magnetic trackers are hard to use in medical environments?
      A. Yes, they can be, especially if the technology is first generation vintage. In the last 10 years many medical device manufacturers have evaluated these early trackers and found them inadequate, usually because of accuracy distortion and improper placement. When developing the 3rd generation tracking technology the focus was and is to address the previous generation’s inadequacies. One of the major improvements has been metal compensation techniques. The improvement of these techniques continues. Botto

      Healthy Schools Brochure Delivers Info on Healthy Educational Environments
      "Across the country, more than 53 million children and six million adults spend their days in our elementary and secondary schools," said Robert Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England office. The booklet, called "Healthy Schools, lessons for a clean educational environment" was developed by the New England regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It provides an easy-to-read guide for administrators, educators and parents looking at ways to make sure local school buildings provide a healthy learning environment.   The brochures include sections on indoor air quality issues, such as mold, asthma, and radon;

      Even If You Live in Sub Tropical Environments You Can Be Vitamin D Deficient
      Vitamin D deficiency has been observed among many populations in the northern United States. But few studies have examined the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in areas of high sun exposure, such as Arizona. A new study has shown adults in southern Arizona are commonly deficient in vitamin D deficiency, particularly those with darker skin who produce less vitamin D in response to sunlight. More than a quarter of Arizona adults tested had dangerously low blood levels of the vitamin.

      Collaborating in virtual environments
      Collaborating in virtual environments Engineers have been using collaborating tools in virtual reality environments for almost 20 years. Now, South Korean and Japanese researchers have tried to compare different experiences of users working together using the Virtual Dollhouse application where two people working together have to build a virtual dollhouse using virtual building blocks, a hammer, and nails. Some of them were in ‘traditional’ collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) using haptic technologies. Others were working over the Internet as well as over a local area network. They’ve concluded that users could still work together effectively over a network. Synchronize root environments with rsync - part 1
      Just yesterday I wrote an article about how to backup using tar and ssh and today I would like to write something about rsync - one of the best programs you can find in Linux. Synchronizing files between multiple servers or desktops is a classic problem. However, we are the lucky ones and we do not use Windows and have access to such a powerful program called rsync (it’s available for windows too). Let’s say you have made some improvements to a file on a server, and you would like to propagate it to other servers. What is the best way? Individual users often encounter this problem when trying to work on files on multiple computer systems, but it’s even more common for system administrators who tend to use many different computer systems in the course of their daily activities. Printers in Factory Environments
      Why is it that Printers, especially Laser Printers, have to have so many little bits of flimsy plastic bits and openings to jam things in? These plastic bits often snap off, get broken off or get jammed in odd places causing all sorts of mayhem and wasted productivity. This is magnified even moreso in factory environments, especially ours where there is a fair amount of dust due to the manufacturing process. This stuff gets in everwhere, stickies things up, jams things up and is constantly at the hands of heavy handed users whose focus is on getting their job done. I've just been down to a printer now where the users tell me the top won't close - and it won't - why because there's a little plastic widget that seems stuck and the only way to get it loose is to pretty much disassemble the printer.We get through a laser printer every few months in the factory and at over a grand a pop it's not a funny business. These aren't cheap and nasty lasers either, they are HP 4250N. I would l

      Programming environments such as Ajax have allowed so-called Web 2.0 businesses to emerge internationally. "Google Maps is a fantastic example of a Web 2.0 application that has tens and tens of millions of users around the world, and that was a development out of Australia," Mr Noble says. "The other part that has been very important to Google is the confirmation of the commercial model whereby non-intrusive advertising can support a variety of free content." As network speeds push higher and higher, new businesses and business models will continue to emerge, Mr Noble predicts. But the big precondition for a flourishing online environment is a proper supply of engineering candidates.

      Global Momentum For Smoke-free Indoor Environments At Tipping Point
      In a Perspective in the April 12, 2007 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Association of European Cancer Leagues describe the growing momentum for indoor smoking bans in countries across the globe. They identify Ireland’s pioneering 2004 comprehensive indoor smoking ban as a likely tipping point for fundamental change in social norms and public health worldwide. Since 2004, in only a few years, more than a dozen other countries have also adopted national indoor smoke-free policies that are being implemented or will be implemented in the near future. Lead author Dr. Howard Koh, Professor and Associate Dean of Public Health Practice at HSPH said: “The 21st century is witnessing a paradigm shift, once considered impossible, whereby entire countries are declaring themselves smoke-free in indoor public places. Such mounting progress across the globe is making smoking history worldwide.” T

      School environments - are they healthly?
      As a teacher I understand the importance of education; however, I am not sure we cover all the basics students need. For example, when do we teach them about the criticality of a healthily environment? I know as a biology teach that we have 6 weeks to cover ecology, which doesn't leave much time for drilling down on the how's, why's and what's of being environmental stewards. Yes, there's time in class to discuss the importance of recycling and share some facts, like the hundreds of years it takes for a plastic diaper to decompose. It would be better if we can instill in students the importance of environmental friendly behaviors so they can practice them - but that takes time and it's not a "Standard" in our District.Looking from a whole different point of view, what about the status of our nation's school buildings? I know at our school we have one very old building. Teachers that have been in that one for years swear its' air system is spewing bad stuff. I don't mean
