The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that a personal computer and a memory card belonging to a test writer were stolen. The test writer in this case was writing for the National Center for University Entrance Examinations, which is in charge of creating the college entrance exam that is given once a year in Japan. The next upcoming one is given on January 19 and 20.
According to the article, over 400 teachers and professors at national, public, and private universities spent two years formulating the questions. And while the test writer wasn't storing the actual questions in the stolen goods (these are to be secured in a vault), he was carrying enough material used to create the questions to create problems—i.e., anyone who gets to see the contents of the laptop and memory card would be able to seriously narrow the field on what to study. I’m in the process of writing my essay according to the UC prompts.
Prompt one is: “Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community, or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.”
Prompt two is: “Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you.”
I don’t really like the first one all that much, but the second one is easy enough to respond to. Once I’m done I might put it up here and ask for feedback or something.

This summer's Crewe Carnival is all set to go Green (you can contact CNBC for details of the eco-friendly drive here) and there is a change planned to the procession route and, ultimately, the arrival at Queens Park. I've always had a soft spot for the carnival trucks that slowly make their way down West Street. Sure many are hastily thrown together and don't look particularly impressive. But it represents someone (or some group) making an effort and trying to raise a few quid for charity. This year the main procession will come through the main gates off Victoria Avenue. That's a much better start to the celebrations, as rolling up on the St George playing fields was never particularly satisfactory, was it? However, the carnival crowds will not be greeted with lush, established trees lining the main avenue (as above, taken last summer). There are no shortcuts. Competition is quite fierce these days and a casual approach to exam is not going to help. In my opinion, the basic tour of Itaipu - the one done by the vast majority of tourists - is of marginal interest. Visitors are shown a video presentation where they learn about the wonderful effect the construction of the dam had on the environment - any mention to the monstrous external debt resulting from the construction of the dam is conspicuous by its absence. After the presentation, there is a quick tour around the external part of the dam.
