The growing use of encryption software -- like Microsoft's own BitLocker -- by cyber criminals has led Microsoft to develop a set of tools that law enforcement agents can use to get around the software, executives at the company said. Microsoft first released the toolset, called the Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE), to law enforcement last June and it's now being used by about 2,000 agents around the world, said Anthony Fung, senior regional manager for Asia Pacific in Microsoft's Internet Safety and Anti-Counterfeiting group. Among the proposals floated by the administration at the meeting last week was one that would limit the emissions cap to electric power plants, while also allowing a "safety valve" if the cost is found to be too high. The Senate bill has no such escape valve and covers emissions almost across the economy. The administration views were presented by James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and domestic policy adviser Keith Hennessey. A new installation would have cost more than $1-million and taken months to implement. U.S.-based Google spotlighted the university as one of the first to adopt its software model of the future, and today Mr. Pawlowski boasts the move was the right thing for Lakehead, saving it hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual operating costs. New program designed to reduce case load - By SCOTT BRAND - STE. MARIE - Chippewa County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Peppler has announced a new program designed to stem the flow of bad checks.“Hopefully it works,” he said, noting this program has been successful in other counties throughout the state. “It seems to work elsewhere.”The Check Enforcement Program deals with checks that were dishonored because of insufficient funds, closed accounts or no account checks, said Peppler in a press release. The program offers an opportunity to avoid prosecution if the bad check-writer fulfills a number of conditions. Full restitution must be made to the recipient of the bad check with additional funds collected to offset service fees and program administration. With the Check Enforcement

In a post entitled "Law Enforcement and the Next President" over at Crime and Consequences, Michael Rushford notes, "It has been quite a while since crime and law enforcement were considered issues important enough to merit the attention of Presidential candidates" - this despite the fact that a poll shows crime is considered a very serious problem by 57 percent of the American public. Rushford also notes that our criminal justice policy is "at a tipping point" as a result of "overcrowded, poorly maintained prisons" and lack of financial resources. He then says, "While most crime fighting is done at the state level, the President can have a powerful influence on how local politicians address the issue." How so? After brief attention to "three strikes" laws, attitudes about the death penalt

And, to a degree this part of the test will slow you down. However, if you follow the strategies described in this article you will be able to complete your test at a steady pace and gain valuable points. Most police entrance exams emphasize reading comprehension. Why? Because to properly perform their jobs, law enforcement officers are expected to understand and comprehend what they read.Reading comprehension questions will typically be based on one or more situational paragraphs, or require a candidate to determine the proper course of action to take based on reading police rules and procedures.First, I would suggest you do a lot of reading before
Article Title: Benefits Of Having Your Dog Training For LawEnforcementAuthor: Orlando SmithIn recent years, dogs have become an intricate part of law enforcement. Dog training for law enforcement purposes is critical in preparing them for their role in law enforcement. The technology is designed to let content owners prevent YouTube users from uploading copies of their videos, or they can have the choice of monetizing unauthorized uploads with ads.
Seven months ago, Viacom (VIAB) filed a copyright infringement lawsuit demanding $1 billion from Google and YouTube and charging the companies with “brazen disregard” for intellectual property laws and threatening “the economic underpinnings of one of the most important sectors of the United States economy.” On Tuesday, YouTube finally launched a content identification system, YouTube Video Identification, to give copyright owners some measure of control over the presence of their content on the site.
The new service requires that content owners upload videos they wish to protect so that a “hash” — a numeric fingerprint of sorts — can be created. That done, content owners will be able to prevent

In the first testimony heard, Cheryl Corbiell voiced her concerns over the dissipated tourism industry on Molokai. Corbiell is upset by the recent shutdown of many vacation rentals on the island, saying that the income from tourism is essential to the local economy. Those who operate vacation rentals illegally often go un-prosecuted due to lack of enforcement by Maui County officers. The county does currently only employs three officers for the entire county, which is not enough to properly impose zoning and building laws.

Don Surber (via Power Line) finds that in Norway, they've got quite a way of dealing with criminals: arrest, try, and then release them and let the criminals decide if they want to go to jail or not. According to Aftenposten, one out of five criminals don't turn up to serve their sentence:It almost sounds like something out of a film, but for the Norwegian Correctional Services (Kriminalomsorgen), the problem is real. 20 percent of convicted criminals simply fail to show up to serve their prison term, according to figures for 2007.Criminals sentenced to long prison terms are particularly prone to bunking off. Almost every fourth person sentenced to six months or more in prison failed to meet in 2006. The situation is only becoming graver, with a total a 1799 people failing to show up during the whole of last year, compared to as many as 1068 people so far this year."It’s difficult to make plans for the prison terms when we have no idea who will show up and who won't," said Ellinor

Basic Overview of IP Enforcement Mechanisms
The first thing I can say about enforcing your IP in Korea is “forget civil courts and damages.” Such cases can be long, expensive, long, tedious, long, and can have anticlimactic rulings (oh, did I mention they were long?). For the latter, courts usually only award compensatory damages that can be meticulously accounted for and they almost never give punitive damages. To give you a time frame, an initial decision can take at least a year, and usually you can add another year or so for the appeals process to work out, and the latter makes the reward for patience rarely worth it. To make these options even more unattractive, while you may be able to recover legal fees, they are limited by law and rarely match the actual cost.
However, I actually should not be so dismissive. Civil courts can be a weapon in your arsenal. You will find your Korean lawyers treat it as a weapon of last resort.
Hardbeatnews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Thurs. Aug. 9, 2007: U.S. Homeland Security chief, Mike Chertoff, insists his agency will be using all of the current laws available to carry out tougher workforce enforcement.
[Editor’s Note: My scant treatment of Korea on this blog has not been intentional. Occasionally, I’ve dealt with the topic, blogging on fruitless plans to build highway and rail lines across the DMZ into the DPRK (North Korea); the now imprisoned flower-baron Yang Bin’s involvement in resort casinos in Shinuiju across the border from Dandong (丹东); and, if I remember correctly, something about bibimbap.

MySpace.com said today that they are going to provide law enforcement officials with information on registered sex offenders that are using the highly popular social Web site.
Last week attorney generals from eight states demanded that MySpace provide information on the number of registered sex offenders that use the site, as well as where they live. Initially MySpace refused, citing the US federal privacy laws. However, Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut Attorney General, said that the company has agreed to comply.
Blumenthal said, “Our subpoena compels this information right away within hours not weeks, without delay because it is vital to protecting children,” and that “many of these sex offenders may have violated their parole or probation by contacting or soliciting children on MySpace.”
Blumenthal also said that his office will be looking not only for names and addresses, but also for how the sex offenders used the Web site. They will then cross-refere
As if traditional meth labs aren’t bad enough, where criminals cook a combination of over-the-counter and acquired hazardous materials to feed the addicts’ need, now these same criminals are evading police in mobile meth labs. When meth labs are housed in a home or apartment, there is the inherent danger of explosion from chemical reactions and fire used to produce the drugs.
Illegal drug makers, though, have been a sitting target fearing police intervention at any moment. Static meth labs have also given government officials, motel owners and other landlords the added obligation of sending out the HAZMAT team to cleanup the hazardous chemicals whenever a meth lab is busted.
But, now the methamphetamine makers have taken to the streets in groves in order to evade detection by police, creating mobile meth labs in cars, vans, trucks and RV’s. According to reports in 2002, at least 20-percent of the meth labs were then mobile. Recent reports state that this number is now over 30-per

If anyone has been under a rock for the past 2 days, we know that Barry Bonds has tested positive for amphetamines. When the news first came out, Bonds asserted that he got a product from Mike Sweeney, his teammate that have had some of the same components shared with amphetamines. I left a post on another site about this same topic, and in my heart of hearts, if drug use in sports really wanted to be stopped, it would have been done long, long ago. If baseball, much less any other sport wanted to stop illicit use of drugs, then Bug Selig and others in position of authority would have the gumption to style the drug testing program held by the Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency has railed against baseball's testing, and I agree with their standpoint. If baseball really wanted to stop the illegal drug use once and for all, they would not curb into the Players' Association and just add testing for HGH and whatever else. Someone remind me, how long has amphetamine use been
