I feel terrible for the parents in Louisiana who want their children to receive an adequate education and realize that science is an important part of such an education. After Gov. Bobby Jindal ignored those calling for a veto and signed the Louisiana Science Education Act into law, it is going to be increasingly difficult for Louisiana's children to receive the education they deserve. If you have

The 900-year-old Jaisalmer Fort is a stunning piece of Indian desert architecture. As I mentioned in the pictorial, it is THE desert dream - almost a cliche - a medieval sandstone masterpiece of narrow, twisting alleyways, havelis, palaces and temples surrounded by massive walls with 99 bastions. What’s more, it’s India’s last living fort, a [...]

Drug abuse is not a victim less crime. There are millions of children like me in this country. Millions. They suffer from abuse and neglect because of their parents drug addictions. Over the past 10 years, fueled by alcohol and illegal drugs, the number of abused and neglected children has more than doubled-- from 1.4 million in 1986 to more than 3 million in 1997 1. And 2.4 million children in this country have a parent in prison for a drug-related offense. 2.4 million children. And drug use causes or exacerbates most cases of child neglect and abuse. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) estimates that substance abuse and addiction is the chief culprit in at least 70 percent of all child welfare spen

"Carbon Cap Scams ..pull enforcement of the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act into the debate over climate change." Among the proposals floated by the administration at the meeting last week was one that would limit the emissions cap to electric power plants, while also allowing a "safety valve" if the cost is found to be too high. The Senate bill has no such escape valve and covers emissions almost across the economy. The administration views were presented by James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and domestic policy adviser Keith Hennessey. Among those at the meeting were Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, the No. 2 House Republican; Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, the ranking Republican on the Select Committee on Energy In

From In our age of privacy the postcard is an endangered, subversive species : Suggesting that postcards are, in fact, sufficiently alive to be dangerous would be more effective. Floating a rumour that the government wanted to ban them because, say, terrorists were using them in preference to email or mobiles, and low standards in schools meant MI5 couldn't read their handwriting - that would confer upon the postcard the aura of subversion its salvation requires. It would be wrong to be nostalgic about a golden age of postcards to the extent of scorning their usurpers, the email and the text message. In this country it is the continuously murmuring prose haiku dialogue of the SMS, rather than the email, which has supplanted the ink and paper billets-doux of lovers from the days
It is not a generalization or spin that some conservatives and republicans want to quash the Endangered Species Act or limit its use to flagship species like Bald Eagles or Blue Whales. The problem is that people arguing either of these points do not understand basic principles of ecology or how the environment works. Species depend on each other for survival in the web of life. A seemingly insignificant species like an insect may be absolute necessary for the survival of a flagship species or plant that can cure current maladies or those not yet named. All species matter. From Mother Earth News, KS: "What they did," says Snape, "was attach a completely unrelated rider onto a $5 billion defense spending bill. Bald Eagles [Haliaeetus leucocephalus] were always and always my favorite birds, and this is way before time before I had my hands on the camera. Never really saw them in real life until few years ago. They are such a beautiful and glorious birds. Unfortunately, most of my photos are taken at various zoo's (Toronto Zoo, African Lion Safari, Jurong Bird Park, San Diego Zoo, Hanover Zoo), and through the mesh. I am lucky that my current 100-400mm Canon lens does not pick up any close to the lens obstructions, like cage mesh or wire fences. Well, there was one another place I saw Bald Eagles, was when we visited Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, but due to bad weather and them being far away I only got quick glimpse of few pairs of eagles. But this gives me a good reason to go back one day.As my ti

Adding to the growing list of countries who have acknowledged to go green and start conservation on wiser note is Taiwan. Known for being the leader in electronics manufacturing today, Taiwan has taken the initiative in turning to eco-tourism to help boost its conservation concerns today.
There are a lot of green concerns that Taiwan has to address. It is not merely a matter of conservation but preservation as well. They have their own share of endangered species such as the turtles and putting a foot down is the best way to help control this ever popular issue of eco-friendliness today.
“It’s quite a unique experience to see a huge sea turtle coming ashore to nest. I have never seen an endangered animal before,” said Linda Wu, who joined the eco-tour in Wanan, part of some 100 islets of the Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait.
Wu, a secretary from Taipei, has been so impressed by the visit that she is planning to bring her 11-year-old daughter to Penghu next year

Before we get to part two of "World's Scariest Animals", I thought I would touch on an issue that has been brewing over the last couple of months: manatee recovery.According to an article in the Associated Pres, the manatee may no longer be classified as an "endangered" animal."The US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) says it's considering changing the classification to 'threatened'. An internal memo obtained by the Washington Post says Florida manatees are showing positive growth and adult survival rates, and no longer meet the definition of an endangered species.""The animals would still remain protected under the federal Endangered Species Act, making it illegal to harass, poach or kill them," they reported.
About 50 endangered sea turtles have washed ashore with logs and debris in Malaysia, possibly due to strong currents after recent earthquakes in Indonesia, an official said Monday. Two of the hawksbill turtles, which landed Saturday on muddy Kuala Tunjang beach in the northwestern state of Kedah, were found dead, while four others were injured and being treated, said state fisheries director Sani Mohamad Isa. The rest of the turtles have been released into the sea, Sani said. He said that the logs and bamboo washed ashore with the turtles were not found in Malaysia, and that plastic water bottles and shampoo containers in the debris had Indonesian labels. "We believe the logs are from Indonesia" and washed over to Kedah by strong currents following recent tremors in Indonesia, he said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
Where have all the truth tellers gone? This incident at UF the other day was the perfect opportunity for John Kerry to stand up to abuse, to put a stop to a wrong situation, in short, to be a leader. Instead, by all accounts I've read, he droned on in monotone and seemed to not notice the screaming man being ganged up on by five or six police officers.Kerry's office issued a press statement, eschewing yet another chance to do the right thing, to speak-or at least squeak- truth to power, instead, he said this:"In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way. I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but again I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line andtheir intervention. I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of answering him when he was taken in
Animal Prints do not seem to be dying out anytime soon. Keep animal prints in check though and limit to accessories. An animal print scarf looks chic and slightly Bridget Bardot retro when tied as a headband. Animal prints are even showing up on jewelry, a low cost, low commitment way to give a nod to the trend. Grrr…
Adventurous souls can give an animal print blouse a shot. Seen on the runways, the animal print blouse will definitely be making appearances on the streets. A subtle print works best in integrating with other travel neutrals.
I was browsing through MSN.com and came across a list of endangered species and the banggai cardinal fish made the list. I’ve heard about them being in trouble by overfishing but I was reminded again today. Here’s what they say…
“Endangered: Highly prized in the aquarium industry, this species was placed on the 2007 Red List for the first time in the endangered category. Found only in the Banggai Archipelago near Sulawesi, Indonesia, it has been heavily exploited, with approximately 900,000 extracted every year.
Conservationists are calling for the fish to be reared in captivity for the aquarium trade so that the wild population can be left to recover”.
i know that banggai cardinals breed easier for people than other fish and captivity bred fishes are usually hardier and live longer.
The often called “Eighth Wonder of the World” is in the endangered list and the Philippines is racing to beat the deadline on 2009 given by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Center. This is to speed up the rescue of Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao province which is now dying out.UNESCO included the Banaue Rice Terraces in 1995 as one of about 180 other World Heritage Sites that should be preserved for future generation’s enjoyment and appreciation. In 1999, the Rice Terraces of Ifugao was included in the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to deterioration of the terrace clusters which was mainly caused by socio-economic problems. The lack of maintenance due to apparent disinterest of Ifugao youth using the traditional rice farming practiced by elders and ancestors caused damage to terrace walls and irrigation systems. Also, the lack of zoning and failure to prevent the construction of houses ruins the heritage landscape.sou
I hadn't visited Tank Theory for while now until I received their newsletter, and so today I checked out their new designs in the Artist Society section (which is my favorite anyway). And what do I see in the Artist Society section? Endangered Species, the newest design of Steve Wilson! And if the name doesn't ring a bell, let me just tell you that Steve Wilson is the creator of the Toxic Spill t-shirt, one of the most popular t-shirts from Tank Theory ever. Love it, love it, love it! Actually... love him, love him, love him! This psychedelic style of his designs is just amazing; images of animals, humans, beauty and mind just come out and disappear into extinction just like thoughts, memories, and old scents in our head... OK, I know I sound melodramatic but hey, I'm just a desperate t-shirt hunter who just found the perfect prey but he's missing his spear! lol...
At last……the decision has been made!! My fellow DY designer in Sony Corp Japan, Murata-san, has been transferred to LCD TV panel engineering department. It’s a huge blow for him…because his whole life has been dedicated to the development of CRT TV. He has a couple of US pattern registration under his name that makes him untouchable to most of DY designers. Thats how good he is…it will never change the final fate of CRT TV !!….
Then, how about me? Am I going to be the last survival in the history of Sony Trinitron DY designer? Yeah..it should be like that. I don’t know if I should be happy or sad about that. I have been sitting at my desk with nothing to do for almost 6 months now. The only thing that I managed to do is surfing the internet and off course..blogging! …I have no problem with that though.. But since I changed from an active worker to a sluggish one, my weight has increased tremendously to 70kg…I realized that I have to take action as soon as possibl
Word comes from The Guardian that everything that Ernest Hemingway left behind in Cuba seems to be caught between a rock and a hard place at the moment. On the one hand, his home and possessions belong to a government and a country which can't afford (and may lack the will) to ensure that they are preserved for future generations. On the other, is a U.S. government whose economic sanctions
The Endangered Species Act, aims to safeguard the best interest of animals that have been abused and deteriorating in numbers owing to the unfortunate incidents of pollution and killings one by one by humans.
The list of endangered species could go on and on. It includes birds, mammals and sea creatures. One hint we can refer to when we want to find out which among the creatures of the animal kingdom are nearing extinction is through their rare sightings to date. Obviously, it has been man that has made these rare sightings possible. Hopefully the Endangered Species Act can control this imbalance.

On the same day the American bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list, a plurality of the Supreme Court replaced the once-threatened eagle with minority children. Their decision in two school cases endangers the well-being of countless children of color nationwide. In the 50th anniversary year of the Little Rock school integration crisis, the Court, by a 5-4 vote, issued a judicial slap in the face to those who, as youngsters, braved howling mobs in Arkansas to make democracy work.Knocking down voluntary plans to promote diversity in their classrooms, a Court plurality dreamingly suggested non-racial plans to cure the schools' racial imbalances. Sadly for the two cities' children -- and for other believers in fairness -- there are no non-racial remedies for racial discrimination. In order to get beyond race, you've got to go to race. To suggest racial neutrality as a remedy is sophistry of the highest sort......Segregated neighborhoods make segregated schools inevitabl

Earth-centred news for the health of air, water, habitat and the fight against global warming
A lot of the people today are actively participating in lotteries, usually to try and win a large sum of money. However, this different kind of lottery for a cause is dedicated for the impending endangered species of creatures we have today. Condors, whales and dolphins lead the pack of groups of animals that have been threatened with extinction due to one reason or another.
There are a lot of similar activities and causes done all over the world. Let us take a look at how and why they do these things.

We often hear about a vast array of creatures that are dancing on the brink of extinction. Wild animals are leading the way followed by the usual rare sight of sea life. In general, most of the creatures we see today will come to a point of being endangered. All humanity is responsible for this for their continued negligence of such environmental and humane acts.
Actually, man may be responsible as well for his extinction soon if he is not careful. It has all become a point where man must satisfy his needs and wants and forget about the social responsibility he has on others. This is a clear recipe for imminent endangerment of human species as well.

This is why I worry about global warming.
“This may be the first place on Earth where global warming could hurt our very religion. We are becoming an endangered species of Hindus,” said Veer Bhadra Mishra, an engineer and director of the Varanasi-based Sankat Mochan Foundation, an organization that advocates for the preservation of the Ganges. “The melting glaciers are a terrible thing. We have to ask ourselves, who are the custodians of our culture if we can’t even help our beloved Ganga?”
A Sacred River Endangered by Global Warming - washingtonpost.com
Why am I worried about the destruction of a religion? That doesn’t sound like me. The collapse– the rapid collapse– of a religion due to outside forces rather than to willful abandonment of the faith by the faithful would cause some nasty disruption which would effect all of us. Besides, that global warming could catastrophically effect a religion is an angle I hadn’t considered.
Impending extinction of animals and living beings are always brought up on every topic for discussion that includes the issue of global warming. However, people tend to forget that they too are on the verge of possible extinction if they are not careful.
This is the reality. Man has been suffering illnesses and left with little room to enjoy the usual comforts of living as earlier experienced. But it is man as well who has dug his own grave. If we are careful, the thin line of hope may eventually snap. Just look around you and you will see what you and your future clan will have to deal with; that is if it is not yet too late.

There are currently 279 highly imperiled US species that are designated as candidates for listing as threatened or endangered and that face potential extinction. But the Bush administration has failed to protect any one of them in the last year. The last species protected by the administration were 12 Hawaiian picture-wing flies listed in a single rule on May 9, 2006. Overall, according to a report released by the Center for Biological Diversity, the Bush administration has listed fewer species under the Endangered Species Act than any other administration since the law was enacted in 1973, to date only listing 57 species compared to 512 under the Clinton administration and 234 under the first Bush administration.“The Bush administration has killed the program for protecting new species as endangered,” says Noah Greenwald, conservation biologist with the Center for Biological Diversity. “and in the process has contributed to the extinction of at least two species. April 13, 2007 — By Jim Loney, ReutersMIAMI -- Florida manatees are dying in record numbers and the lumbering marine mammals face growing threats from speedboats, a toxic foe called red tide and the potential loss of their warm winter havens at power plants. So why is the U.S. government talking about removing its protective "endangered" label, conservationists ask. "It's a concern because the mortality numbers are still so high," said Dr. Maya Rodriguez, a veterinarian at the Miami Seaquarium who treats sick and injured manatees. "All it might take is a few power plants to close or a really bad red tide to really hurt the population." The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that the slow-moving West Indian manatee, one of the first creatures put on the U.S. endangered species list in the 1960s, no longer qualifies as endangered. That follows a similar move by Florida officials last year. Wildlife officials say the manatee is not in immediate danger of extinction an

Indonesia's critically endangered Sumatran rabbit has been spotted for only the fourth time since 1972, a conservationist said Friday. The nocturnal animal, also known as the striped rabbit, was photographed by a camera trap in January this year in a national park on Sumatra island, said Frida Mindasari Saanin from the Wildlife Conservation Society. "Very little is known about this species. We don't know how many of them are living in the wild," she said. There was another sighting in 1972, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Saanin said the rabbit was also seen by a different conservation group in 1998. Sumatra's montane forests are home to some of the most endangered species in the world, including the Sumatran rhinoceros and tiger. Scientists say the sun-dappled island may also contain species yet to be identified. Last month a clouded leopard found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra was declared a new species of big c
Bush administration reinterprets species law: "If upheld by the courts, Suckling estimated the new policy would remove 80 percent of the roughly 1,300 species from threatened and endangered lists — because most species have at least one stronghold where they are doing well.'It's just so clearly illogical and anti-wildlife that I can't wait to get this before a federal judge,' Suckling said. 'They are rewarding industry for driving populations extinct. Because as soon as you drive a population extinct (in a certain area) it is no longer on the table. It no longer counts toward whether a species is endangered.'"Click here for complete article.
To all Big Hawk Fans, John Hawkins (November 15, 1969 – May 1, 2006), better known as the Screwed Up Click’s 5 Star General, Big Hawk, HaDubK, or H.A.W.K., will have an all, new album "Endangered Species" released on 5/1/07, which is exactly one year from the date of his untimely death. He was a well established rapper from Houston, Texas that started rapping in 1992 when his younger brother, the late, great Fat Pat, took him to DJ Screw’s house. Hawk and Pat went on to become original members of the late DJ Screw’s rap posse called The Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.). After huge success on countless screw tapes the two brothers decided to start elevating their game. Pat’s “Ghetto Dream” was to help bring not just Houston, but the entire south to the forefront of the rap industry. In 1994 Hawk, Pat, Screw and some of their good friends, KK and Koldjack, collaborated to form the group D.E.A. and Dead End Records (named for the dead end block of MLK where Hawk grew up). In late

Much has been written recently on the "dumbing down" of American education. Our textbooks are easier, lectures are shorter, worksheets have replaced term papers and, although standardized tests have become easier, test scores have dropped or showed only slight improvements. Homeschoolers and critics of public education are not the only ones to notice. Teachers have been lamenting this trend
NAIROBI (AFP) - Virgin Atlantic chairman Sir Richard Branson on Saturday announced a programme aimed at saving elephants in Kenya, as he boarded his airline's first flight to the east African nation.

He pledged 250,000 dollars (186,000 euros) to help create Virgin Mount Kenya Elephant Corridor that would benefit about 2,000 elephants threatened by human encroachment.
"Historically, the African elephant has roamed across the continent from South Africa to the Mediterranean coast but its population is under serious threat," Branson told reporters in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
"We need to build safe elephant corridors to protect the species, as well as the villages, people and crops around them, and our wider environment.
"We can create a vital lifeline for the entire animal and human population in the region."
The project, which would cost a million dollars (744,000 euros) over 10 years, would link two ecosystems and enable the elephants to use their hist
