There is no doubt that human consumption of energy adds to the Earth's heat budget. However, the amount of solar energy available to the Earth has been estimated (1) as 3850 zettajoules per year (ZJ/yr)[zetta = 10^21]. Total human energy consumption is something around 0.5 ZJ/yr (2). Human's direct energy contribution is insignificantly small. The reason that greenhouse gases can have a measureable effect is that they are essentially cumulative, that is, once they are added to the atmosphere, they persist for relatively long times and so continue to build up to higher and higher concentrations (3). There are some caveats to these objections: For instance, the exact emissions numbers are by no means agreed upon, and cellulosic ethanol could be made from switchgrass or other plants, which can grow almost anywhere and would not increase the price of

End of the line for the Corvette and others of its ilk? It's been an interesting week for car manufacturers worldwide, with both the EU leadership and the US government pushing forward with plans for stricter fuel economy and emissions in the future. On Wednesday, the EU Commission proposed new legislation to reduce the average CO2 emissions from cars by 20% to 120g/km buy the year 2012. The proposals come after many months of lobbying by car manufacturers and green campaigners have already derided them as being too lenient, but further watering-down is believed to be inevitable thanks to Germany's influence on behalf of Mercedes and BMW.Over in America on the same day, President Bush signed into law a new Energy Bill that will require an average fuel consumption rate of 35mpg by the year 2020 (the figure in the U.S. currently stands at just over 26mpg). GM was quick to look for sympathy, lamenting as it launched the new Corvette ZR-1 that it could be the last of the breed. But maybe w

I wrote a post couple of months ago on the plans of Dell Computer to become “The greenest technology company on earth” (See Sustainability in the supply chain: Dell needs to move quickly) Over there I wrote that Dell has lots of challenges to achieve this goal given the amount of investments which other companies such as HP and IBM have already done.
But it seems that Dell really wants to take the lead in this respect because recently, Dell became the first IT company to sign up to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) plan to report on supply chain carbon emissions, according to IT World.
The Carbon Disclosure Project is a not-for-profit organization founded to obtain full carbon footprint disclosure by Times 500 companies on behalf of investors and with a desire to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Could the U.S. have had it right all along? What if demanding lower emissions will damage our economy and handicap innovation to the point where we're just scraping by in an old system, and not developing any new technology? Could less-regulated emissions be the key to unlocking revolutionary new energy technology?I'm thinking that forcing emissions lower will increase the need for such technology. Now companies will tweak their systems left and right to get their emissions legal, and each tweak will add up. To a new technology? Maybe. Or maybe a new technology will be demanded after all the possible tweaks have been implemented.Hopefully new rules won't sabotage our efforts to develop clean energy.
Yahoo had a great article on global warming with a lot of information. Basically, the rest of the world wants to lower emissions, but the U.S. thinks a strong economy with new technologies is the way to go. People are saying the U.S. is isolated in its ideas, but U.S. representatives deny that. One of the most important parts of the article mentions "scientific reports demonstrating the world needs to limit the increase in global temperatures to 3.6 degrees above what they were before the world industrialized and started spewing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, or face the worst environmental, social and economic impact of climate change."That really made me understand how much research and intent has gone into the global warming movement. Before all this started, people would just say, "It's hot." Now we're dealing with average global temperatures, and we're keeping track of what we do and how it impacts the world. The article also mentioned how many believe "the Bush admini

I saw on an episode of the "Colbert Report" that a few years ago, 2005 or 2006, greenhouse gas emissions were down from the previous year. Colbert attributed this to higher oil prices lowering demand for gas, and our government's hesitation to correct the aftermath of wild weather like Katrina. To me, the fact that we got a "good" result while taking little action as a nation means that when we finally do get into full-swing with the "War on Global Warming," we'll be able to make some major progress.Good news, I think.

EMERYVILLE, CA. – Cartridge World, the World’s largest printer cartridge refiller and remanufacturer, has announced that its customers will help avoid 1 million pounds of carbon emissions annually by reusing its printer cartridges instead of buying new. This is the equivalent of taking almost 100 passenger cars off the road for one year and recycling 150 tons of waste instead of depositing it in a landfill.

The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is a world first and a major weapon in Europe's fight against climate change. The innovative system has turned carbon dioxide emissions into a tradeable commodity. They can now be bought and sold like any other of the thousands of products traded on world markets today. The scheme works by placing a limit or a 'cap' on the amount of carbon dioxide participating installations - currently around 10,500 across the European Union - can emit every year. If an installation emits more than its allowance, it must either pay a very hefty fine or buy surplus allowances from companies that have managed to stay below their limit.

As global economies grow, use more natural resources, and emit more Carbon Dioxide (CO2), more solutions will be needed to reduce global warming. The financial markets provide one unique way of limiting CO2 emissions through the creation of a carbon credit market. Each carbon credit represents one tonne of C02. The carbon credit market creates a monetary value for carbon credits and allows the credits to be traded. Background and the Kyoto ProtocolThe carbon credit market was a result of the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol created legally binding emission targets for developing nations. To meet these targets, nations must limit C02 emissions. This can be accomplished by either reducing emissions or by absorbing emissions through processes such as tree-planting and sequestration. Nations limit emissions by establishing quotas on the amount of emissions businesses can produce. The Carbon Credit Exchange ProcessIf a business has greater emissions then permitted by the quota it must purc

This is an article I came across in today's TimesOnline, written by Lewis Smith, their environment reporter. I've cut it down and brought out some salient points, however the map speaks for itself. The first carbon emissions map of Britain is released today to show which part of the country are responsible for pumping out the most pollution. It was put together by the carbon trust to encourage homes and businesses to cut their carbon consumption.Emissions from businesses were singled out by the trust, which believes that the sector could do more to reduce the carbon variations between towns and cities. In Brighton and Southend, the business sector is responsible for 33% of emissions, whereas in Leicester,Norwich and Sheffield that figure is 55%.Tom Delaney, The Carbon Trust's chief executive said: "Business has a critical role to play in tackling climate change as it is responsible for 40% of the CO2 emissions in the UK..."Hugh Jones, project director at the trust added: "Business h
Hybrids not only perform above average on mileage (the Honda insight can reach above sixty mpg) but reduce their gas emissions and air pollution considerably. Toyota Prius, for example has a 90% reduction in the amount of pollution that would otherwise be in the air. And although this is not perfect it has improved the current standard considerablyAbout one third of air pollution is caused by the fuel used in cars. The major culprit is the carbon dioxide which causes global warming. Compared to regular cars, the Toyota Prius reduces the amount of carbon dioxide by fifty percent. And the hybrid made by Honda has reduced its emissions by two thirds. Nitrogen oxide, a chemical found in car emissions, not only causes global warming, but will cause acid rain and lung irritations. Hydrocarbons is another substance found in gas emissions from a car and this can cause birth defects or lung cancer. Lead is also released in the air as is carbon monoxide every time the car is in motion. Imagine s

For India, which maintained that it will not sign any global agreement on limiting emissions, rather that it will take voluntary steps in the area of energy efficiency and reduction of emissions, the ninth annual PricewaterhouseCoopers report, Energy and Efficiency: Utilities Global Survey 2007, comes as a shot in the arm.For the report shows that while power companies across the world consider global warming and climate change as issues that concern them, they are looking at voluntary ways in which technology and fuel choices can help them address these concerns. So renewable sources of energy, nuclear power, cleaner fuels and energy efficiency have now made it to the agenda of 114 power companies across 44 countries. Nearly 50% of the power utilities polled for the report expect wind and nuclear power to provide an increasing share of their market’s energy consumption in the next five years. This compared to only 17% and 19% of utilities who held a similar view last year. Climate ch
