The most famous of all the Sierra Leonean newspapers (which were of high [...]

A friend of mine who’s being influenced by my blogging addiction is seriously thinking of getting a personal computer (PC). Her dilemma though includes her being a zero knowledge in the technical aspect of a PC. Oh yes, she can operate those Office programs and surf the internet but that’s just about it. Tell [...]
From: NOVA's The Big Deal report on CERN (transcript) STEVE AHLEN: The fact is, from a physicist's point of view, from a philosopher's point of view, from an observational point of view, mass is actually quite mysterious. DAVE WARK: In our best theory of matter, the Standard Model, all the really fundamental particles are like photons—the particles of light—in that they have no intrinsic
Kristie Ackert/NY Daily News:In his first stint in the majors, Edwar Ramirez simply lost his confidence. The wispy righthander suffered a mound meltdown last July 20 against Tampa Bay - issuing four walks and a three-run homer without recording an out - after going 13 days without pitching, and wept in the clubhouse after he was told he was going back to the minors. He returned later in the season,
Getting a loan for Mexico real estate is no longer the brick wall it once was. Traditionally people in Mexico either paid cash for their homes, inherited their home, or built one themselves and home loans were virtually non-existent. The banks that did offer loans had high interest rates that discouraged foreign home buyers from [...]
Thanks to the commodities boom, Brazil has emerged on the world scene as a new economic powerhouse. This has not gone unnoticed by foreign investors who have been pouring billions of dollars into Brazil in an effort to capture some of the vast potential for profit. While it has only been a few years since Brazil was on the verge on economic disaster, it appears they have been able to turn things a
John Robb recently posed an interesting question at his blog, Global Guerrillas: is it possible to leverage decentralized decision making (in order to get inside your opponent’s OODA-Loop) while keeping the organization as a whole responsive to direction from above? In other words, can you leverage the power of decentralized decision making without ceding control to the mob? I think the answer is “partially yes.” Here’s my notion of how this can be done—and its limitations—something that I call “guided emergence.” First, what is an OODA-Loop? It’s a topic mentioned by Robb, and one that I’ve written about many times in the past (1 2). It’s the decision making cycle within any organization as defined by the steps Observe – Orient – Decide – Act. This is

Many many years ago in those halcyon days of early 2002, I happened across this great web site called, The Healing Power of Obnoxiousness, or HPOO for short. It was an online archive for the critical essays of Paul T. Riddell, who's work I knew well from his days as a freelancer for Sci-Fi Universe and Film Threat magazines. Unfortunately, a few months after I found it, the web site went away. The archives were closed, and I wasn't even left with a signpost saying, "Move along. Nothing to see here." I felt like that little kid at the end of Shane, watching what was left of his hero ride off into the sunset. "Come back Paul, come back!" I never even got the chance to subscribe to his newsletter, the oh-so-marvelously named Hell's Half-acre Herald. With the scuttling of his web site, Paul T. Riddell was gone, leaving a gaping wound in the field of genre criticism. The man who introduced me to the works of John Shirley, and the absolute genius who coined the term Cat Piss Man, had disa
