Based on how you use your computer (meaning your computer) you might be wasting a lot of electricity if you leave it on with little or no activity for extended periods of time. Depending upon whether you rarely use the computer or you frequently use the computer or keep it always on, you can do a registry tweak to let the system know the typical role of your computer and help select the best approach to power savings. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg] and look for value of CurrentPowerPolicy. Following defaults are in use: Enter 0 for Home/Office Desk. Enter 1 for Portable/Laptop. Enter 2 for Presentation. Enter 3 for Always On. Enter 4 for Minimal Power Management. Enter 5 for Maximum Battery.
Oasis were right, she is electric, or at least she would be with the Piezing dress concept, designed by Amanda Parkes. The concept was shown off at the 2nd Skin: Imaginative Designs in Digital & Analog Clothing event in San Francisco, and it uses piezoelectric material around the joints to generate electricity when motion is detected. Unfortunately, the current isn't used instantaneously as some sort of nipple stimulator, instead it is stored in a small, removable battery, which can then be discharged when required.
Clothing concepts that double up with unusual functions have been around for a while, but this one seems to be one of the more useful and practical solutions, even if it isn't the epitome of fashion. (Disclaimer: I am not a fashion pundit.) [textually]
Wind is a powerful force that we can harness to create free electricity. Why on earth we are using this technology more is beyond me. Actually, there’s more profit to be made burning oil so I actually do know why we aren’t using wind energy more.

In the short period of 2002-2007,
Most of us have experienced some form of electric "shock," where electricity causes our body to experience pain or trauma. If we are fortunate, the extent of that experience is limited to tingles or jolts of pain from static electricity buildup discharging through our bodies. When we are working around electric circuits capable of delivering high power to loads, electric shock becomes a much more serious issue, and pain is the least significant result of shock. As electric current is conducted through a material, any opposition to that flow of electrons (resistance) results in a dissipation of energy, usually in the form of heat. This is the most basic and easy-to-understand effect of electricity on living tissue: current makes it heat up. If the amount of heat generated is sufficient,

After writing my recent post on environment in Qatar, I was impressed to see that Qatar is now planning to start producing electricity from waste. According to an article in the Gulf Times today, a waste plant which will be opened next year will produce enough electricity (40 mega watts) both to power all the plant's needs and those of its 400 employees and their families. The electricity will be generated through the process of composting organic domestic waste, which can then be used as fertilizer. In total, the plant hopes to recycle 50% of domestic rubbish. The story follows on from news in February that reports Qatar is considering building one of the largest solar power complexes in the world to meet soaring electricity demand, which is predicted to increase by up to four times in t

At San Francisco's Cleantech Forum, a conference of investors and innovators focused on the green technology business, a boatload of early stage startups seek to carve off a slice of the billions of dollars venture capitalists are investing in green tech.
One participant, Leviathan Energy, based in Los Angeles and Israel, has created a turbine that would create power from the downward flow in municipal water and sewer systems. In other words, whenever you flush, you'd be helping generate electricity.

Scientists in America have developed a microfiber fabric that can generate electricity, apparently producing enough current to recharge a cell phone or ensure that a small MP3 music player never runs out of power. If made into a shirt, the fabric could harness power from its wearer simply walking around or even from a slight breeze. The generator takes advantage of the semiconductive properties of zinc oxide nanowires - There are tiny wires 1,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair embedded into the fabric. The wires are formed into pairs of microscopic brush-like structures, shaped like a baby-bottle brush. One of the fibers in each pair is coated with gold and serves as an electrode. As the bristles brush together through a person's body movement, the wires convert the mechanical

I wrote last week about the kosher internet, and decided that that it was part of a chareidi conspiracy. The one obvious flaw in this kosher plan, is that according to many poskim, the electricity in Israel is not kosher and may not be used. So you will have to have a wind up clockwork computer in order to run your kosher internet.Or at least UNTIL NOW! The Israeli Electric Company (IE) have decided to set up kosher electricity for residents of certain (religious) neighbourhoods.Having been to see how they make electricity, and having heard the Jewish guy inside the control room show us (I went with a kollel that I was learning in) tell us exactly which button he pushes every Shabbat at the time the Shabbat clocks all switch on the air conditioning (to turn on an extra turbine), I have been bothered for years about using electricity. The lenient opinion says that since hospitals and sick people need electricity, everyone else can also use it (because of pikuach nefesh). This is equivale

Like a few other projects, the plan to develop around 140 apartments off Electricity Street seems to have gone a bit quiet. The fella who owns some of the land there seems to think it's all going to be too expensive to clear the site and make ready for the development. Others, including people involved with housing developments, are sceptical that the market is ready for another block of accommodation. However, TimP (who lives nearby) located Kinetic's website that lists Electricity Street as one of their key projects. We've seen some of the images before, but the plan view gives a good idea of how the buildings slot in alongside the old Electricity Works and the McDougall Rose building that fronts the street. Also, the river Waldron is shown at the back of the development. I popped down there last Friday after the rain and you can see how the levels soon rise. Nice walk along its banks during the summer months (if they clean it up) but a tad grim during the winter months...

Vattenfall, state-owned Swedish electricity group which has been embarrassed by outages at two of its German nuclear power plants, demoted Friday the chief executive of its German subsidiary. Hans-Juergen Cramer, who only entered the job four months ago, is to be replaced on January 1 as chief of the Vattenfall Europe division by Tuomo Hatakka, 50, head of Vattenfall's Polish unit. At the same time the Polish and German operations are to be merged, the company said in a statement. Vattenfall's Kruemmel and Brunsbuettel plants near Hamburg are still offline after a short-circuit and a transformer fire on the same day in summer triggered a shutdown. Anti-nuclear groups and German authorities have fiercely criticized the company, one of the big four in German electricity, alleging that it was secretive and lax about security. The group's chief executive, Lars G. Josefsson, said that merging the German and Polish operations would give Vattenfall a better starting position to

The Advertising Standards Authority today upheld a complaint about an Npower advert. The ad claimed that Npower, Wembley’s electricity supplier, “powers the arch and stadium with renewable energy”. This was considered confusing by the watchdog because what Npower (and every other supplier with a green product) really does is ‘match’ the stadium’s electricity with renewable power supplied to the grid. As Wembley is connected to the grid, it is impossible to control the source of the energy that the stadium actually uses.
RWE Npower must have been surprised by the ruling, because it has been supplying retail customers on Juice, its green electricity package, on exactly this basis for six years.
The reason that many green electricity products, including Juice, are confusing is not that they match energy through the grid, but that they do not lead to any additional investment in renewables. Npower already purchases sufficient renewable electricity under its Renewables Obligatio

Miles Brignall castigated us in Guardian over the weekend for not switching to green electricity, pointing out that electricity generation is the single biggest source of greenhouse gases yet only 350,000 homes (1.3%) are on a green tariff. There are two reasons why a rational consumer might decide not to switch at the present time:
It is an expensive way to reduce emissions. In Balance calculates the average cost to consumers of avoiding one metric ton of greenhouse gas emissions by switching to a green electricity supplier to be £32. This is quite high. As a crude comparison, Climate Care sells offsets for £7.50 per ton. Most of the things you can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency will cover their costs very quickly.
It might not do anything anyway. Although there are only 1.3% of households on green tariffs, 4.6% of electricity generated in the UK comes (more…)
There are several ways to reduce electricity and natural gas expenses. Air conditioning is an expensive luxury in Texas. First, shop around for a low price per kilowatt hour. If you live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area check out Power to Choose. Several electricity companies are listed. Determine if locking into one year contract is cheaper and avoid monthly fees. Buy a programmable thermostat to control temperature during the workday. Or employ an extreme tactic don't run the air conditioner at all! A crazy thought in Texas! Since the winters are mild in Texas avoid using the heater and sleep in layers of clothing and thick blankets. Better yet, buy a space heater and shut doors to keep the room of interest warm. Go to places with "free" air conditioning and heating during weekends...malls, library, etc. Also, avoid running the dishwasher and taking a hot shower simultaneously. Also, reduce your electricity and water bill by running the dishwasher, washer, and dryer when it's full. Or

I mentioned last time the news of Israel's electric company, regarding its new initiative to recruit 150 new non-Jewish workers to work on the Holy Sabbath and other sacred holidays. Another news flash I heard this week reported a conversion program in the IDF, in which converts to Judaism are not only taught about the Jewish Code of Law, but also of various aspects of everyday life in Israel and basics of Israeli culture (songs of Naomi Shemer were mentioned as an example, of particular interest to me, but I'll discuss this on another occasion). The thought of hiring non-Jews in order to physically maintain a Jewish state seems untenable to me first of all from the Halakhic point of view. If there is a problem with Jews working on the Sabbath in order to produce electricity, I would expect all observant Jews in Israel to refrain from using electricity at all until this problem was solved. However, for decades orthodox Jews have enjoyed electricity with the use of the "Shabbos Clock"

As some of you may know, I live in Texas, and the Texas electricity industry has been deregulated. Thus, Texas electricity rates have become a “shop able” commodity. But why does TXU still get the lion’s share of the electricity market? Because people do not know that they have a choice. I want to address this, and tell you which company I am currently with, why it is so great to go with a different electrical provider, and how much money you can save. I am even going to provide you with a link to be able to shop today’s rate for many different electrical providers.

A lot of people have this concern, and therefore do not want to switch. But in Texas, the generation of the electricity is still regulated. Thus, regardless of the provider, the electricity comes from the same power plant, along the same electrical lines, and if there is a failure, you would call the same 800 number to have the lines repaired. So, the onl
Hydrogen gas is seen as a great energy source because it is renewable, does not produce 'greenhouse gas' in combustion, liberates large amounts of energy and is easily converted to electricity by fuel cells. One company patented a production method that creates hydrogen from waste water using bacteria in a bioreactor.
We previously featured the rather slick Wattson Wireless Electricity Monitor and, whilst this particular gadget known as the Energy Joule pretty much serves the same function, it also comes with wireless weather forecasting thanks to its ability to receive and decode signals from the Ambient Infocast Network. One slight problem – it’s currently only available for US users who purchase their electricity supply from Consumer Powerline. But, as a self –empowering gadget, we can only hope that further suppliers take it, or a comparable device, on board both in the US and internationally as information is power (which, ironically, can only help to reduce our power consumption and therefore our bills).
The Energy Joule from Ambient Services comes with a bright LCD display and simply plugs into an electricity outlet. Once plugged in the device will give you a visual indication as to the current cost of your electricity as well as your current usage thanks to two bars wither side of the

35- God is the light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is that of a niche in which is a lamp. The lamp is enclosed in glass. The glass is like a pear-like planet. Lit with the oil of a blessed tree, the olive, neither of the east, nor the west, whose oil appears to light up even though fire touches it not. Light upon light. God guides to His light whomever He wills. God sets forth parables for the people. God knows all things.24-The Light, 35We believe that there are implications in the Quran indicating certain important inventions that were to take place in the future for mankind. At the time of the Prophet, when these inventions were beyond human imagination, people could not have imagined them. How could it be possible to explain to these people what electricity and the electric light bulb were? The verse above seems to hint at electricity and the light bulb. However, I am not claiming that this is its only significance. It is certain that the scope of it must be
Simmering in the summer heat, Iraqis now have a dream called electricity. It is a part of the bigger dream of reconstruction that collapsed. On all measurable levels, the infrastructure is worse than under the former regime of Saddam Hussein, even when it was crippled by the harshest economic sanctions in modern history.Iraqis lack security, jobs, potable water, and these days when it really pinches, electricity."Electricity is life," said 45-year-old Zahra Aziz, a schoolteacher and mother of four, using a hand-fan in an attempt to cool herself. "Modern life depends on power, and we do not have that here. Having no electricity means having no water, no light, no air-conditioning, and in other words, no life." Most people IPS spoke to in Baghdad said they get one hour of electricity in 24 hours."June is a very hot month, and this permanent electricity failure is just another way of giving Iraqis slow death," Umayma Salim, a doctor who quit her work at a hospital in Baghdad due to secu
This is the kind of stuff that I like to know and I like to share with all of you!Sony has announced the development of a bio battery that generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its catalyst, through the application of power generation principles found in living organisms.Test cells of this bio battery have achieved power output of 50 mW, currently the world's highest level for passive-type bio batteries. The output of these test cells is sufficient to power music play back on a memory-type Walkman. In order to realize the world's highest power output, Sony developed a system of breaking down sugar to generate electricity that involves efficiently immobilizing enzymes and the mediator (electronic conduction materials) while retaining the activity of the enzymes at the anode. Sony also developed a new cathode structure which efficiently supplies oxygen to the electrode while ensuring that the appropriate water content is maintained. Optimizing the electr

Over 130,000 people were left with no power or electricity after the fenton tornado caused extensive damage in the area. The exact number of people left without power after fenton tornado is roughly 131,000.The power company, Consumers Energy, has said that 81,000 homes and businesses were left with out power due to the fenton tornado.Another power company, Detroit Edison has also said the fenton tornado has caused 50,000 of its customers to loose power.
Here's a welcome step that the otherwise corrupt European Union just took, but for how long?GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of Gaza residents were forced to make do without electricity Monday as the coastal strip's power supply became the latest victim of feuding between Gaza's Hamas rulers and their Fatah rivals.European donors stopped paying key electricity aid over the weekend, concerned that Hamas is siphoning off revenues. As Fatah and Hamas traded charges of corruption, at least half of Gaza's 1.4 million people were plunged into darkness.[...]On Sunday, the European Union stopped funding fuel for the power plant that produces electricity for at least 700,000 Gazans. On Monday, it said the payments would not resume because it had information that Hamas was "diverting" electricity revenues."We are ready to resume our support to the Gaza power plant within hours once we receive the appropriate assurances that all the funds will be exclusively used for the ben
The Iranian and Turkish energy ministers on Monday signed a cooperation agreement to increase export of Iran's electric power to Turkey and exchange electricity between the two neighboring countries.Following preliminary talks in Turkey and signing the first agreement, the second round of talks started on Sunday with the Turkish Energy Minister Helmy Guler and his accompanying delegation in Tehran which resulted in singing the second agreement.Iran's Energy Minister Parviz Fatah said, "With the signing of the second agreement we are now closer to implementation stage." According to the agreement, Iran's export of electricity to Turkey will turn into the exchange of electric power between the two countries given such factors as peak hours and demand of each country. He said given that the peak hours for Iran and Turkey differ from each other, therefor an appropriate opportunity has been provided for exchange of energy between the two countries.Fattah added Iran could exchange electric

Imagine photo of refrigeratorstuffed to the gills here.It didn't turn out andI don't have timeto try to upload it again.I'm actually pretty calm even though we are having 12 people over for Sunday dinner tomorrow at one p.m. (14 counting us) and we found out late last night that we will have no electricity all day tomorrow. My loyal readers and fellow sufferers know that also means we will have no water by the time they get here. Fourteen people and no running water for flushing toilets or washing the hands.Ho hum. No big deal. My menu included pinchos (kabobs - both filet mignon and chicken) which we were going to cook on the anafre (grill) anyway, anafre con chorizo (a bean and sausage and cheese dip) which gets heated over charcoal in a special little clay serving dish also called an anafre (do you see any reason whatsoever to be confused about the Spanish language here? You could say, "Put the anafre in the anafre on the anafre" and it would make perfect sense....I guess).I alre

VANCOUVER — If you feel a pang of guilt whenever you see one of those public-service commercials urging you to replace your prehistoric incandescent light bulbs with fluorescents, your idling computer should make you downright remorseful.
A desktop PC with its cooling fans and whirring disk drives uses enough power to light up to three 100-watt bulbs, more if you count the monitor.
With North American homes averaging two or more computers each, that adds up to a lot of electricity, a lot of greenhouse gas-producing power generation even when they’re not being used.
The information-technology sector has started waking up to the fact it gobbles energy at prodigious rates, says Jeff Omelchuk, managing director of the Portland, Ore.-based Green Electronics Council.
