      America's Economy: Resilient or Declining?
Is America in Economic Decline?America in economic decline?Everyday, it seems there is a new economic statistic about a weakening US economy or a news report about the US$ dropping in value against other currencies. My answer is: NO. Maybe right now the dollar is at a low level and portions of the American economy could be better, but the overall economy is solid and the dollar weakness is temporary. If you read history, it seems to be a good rule to never underestimate the American people or our economy. In fact, i think some of the nation's best economic times lie ahead.I'm writing this mostly because I'm a member of a very popular website called Little Green Footballs (www.littlegreenfootballs.com). Due to my online name (chicagodudewhotrades) I get asked a lot of stock market and econo

Like a Child, George Bush Blames Congress for Economy
Today, in what was promoted as a speech to address Americans' anxiety about the economy, George Bush started pointing the finger at Congress for not passing bills that will most likely involve corporations getting more tax breaks.Perhaps, Bush may want to enlighten us about how he's been dealing with the economy during his seven years in office. Or how about taking some responsibility for some of his administration's economic policies as well as the knuckle-headed decision to invade another country for no good reason.Did those not contribute to the recession that we find ourselves in now? The same recession that Bush has refused to even admit is a recession for months now and still won't admit it today.Did Bush actually think his tax rebates that started going out yesterday were going to a

Quick Poll: Will Early Rebates Stimulate the Economy?
Friday Bush announced that the rebate checks will be going out four days early in an effort to stimulate the economy. What do you think?I'm guessing it won't make a bit of difference in anything except for possibly sentiment. There are really only two options - spend or save - with save also implying debt repayment. I'm guessing that anyone that would spend has already spent some to all of what they are expecting. Then there are the savers and debt re-payers. That may have an effect on future economies, but we won't see any results from them now.I'm in between the two types - I'll use most of the return for debt reduction. But I decided to go ahead and spend on bike repair and guitar stuff that I've been wanting for a long time. I don't know if that counts because I probably would

Washington to Shrink US Cars - The Bush Administration is proposing an aggressive schedule for implementing new fuel-economy standards
As gasoline prices approach $4 per gallon in major urban areas, the Bush Administration is proposing an aggressive schedule for implementing new fuel-economy standards. Under rules proposed this week by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the minimum miles-to-the-gallon ratio for both passenger vehicles and light trucks would have to increase by 4.5 percent each year over the five-year period ending in 2015. “This proposal is historically ambitious, yet achievable. It will help us all breathe a little easier by reducing tailpipe emissions, cutting fuel consumption and making driving a little more affordable,” U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters said in a statement. The new rules exceeds the 3.3 percent per year increase proposed by Congress last December, Peters sai

Eight ways to shrink your carbon footprint - 2009 Toyota Corolla vs. Ford Focus, VW Rabbit, Subaru Impreza, and Four More Economy Cars
Come the year 2020, new cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. must average 35 mpg. It’s the law. But why wait? We’ve rounded up eight new models that deliver a 35-mpg average right now, more or less, according to federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) calculations. Reality check: Although the Congress has mandated 35 mpg, our tests show that 35-mpg cars get 25 to 27 mpg in the real world. Close enough for government work? Well, yes, but there is a solid logic at work here. CAFE is a regulatory process first and foremost, and CAFE mpg comes from laboratory tests designed to reliably measure mileage for regulatory purposes. Any resemblance of your mileage to CAFE is purely coincidental. But there is a payoff. The government tests are extremely reliable in producing the CAFE milea

Investing in MOA is Needed for State Economy
by Dave MindemanI am really going against the progressive grain here, but I think the legislature should support tax help for the Mall of America parking ramp. I know it seems to be a contradiction to my usual rants against stadium subsidies -- but to me, its a different animal and merits special consideration. The Mall of America has been talking about this expansion for some time now. They came to the legislature last year for the same reason and got caught up in the Governor/Legislative veto wars. The expansion did not happen. Now, the argument can certainly be made that the Mall can afford to build its own ramp. It can get the credit needed and the project would move ahead, but they cannot seem to pull the trigger. They seem to be looking for an incentive to actually begin....and ob

Indonesian consumer demand to support economy against global slowdown - IMF
Strong domestic consumer demand is expected to drive Indonesia's economy this year and steer it away from the worst impact of a global economic slowdown, an official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Wednesday. The economy has also become more resilient towards external financial instability, given its higher foreign exchange reserves and a declining external debt ratio to gross domestic product, he said. "I think Indonesia's economy will resist the global economic slowdown due to strong domestic demand," Charles Collyns, deputy director at the research department of the IMF told a media briefing. As of end-March, the central bank's foreign exchange reserves stood at $58.98 billion, compared to $47.22 billion at end-March 2007. Indonesia's foreign debt ratio currently
