Another sane article from Cyrano’s Journal, by Charles Sullivan. Belonging to a family entails responsibility, just as belonging to a community involves accountability to it. Knowledge about interdependence and connectivity requires that one share that knowledge and act responsibly upon it. It would be considered irresponsible and immoral to exploit one’s own family for private gain. [...]

      Ecological accounting
clipped from www.footprintnetwork.orgIn order to live, we consume what nature offers. Every action impacts the planet's ecosystems. This is of little concern as long as human use of resources does not exceed what the Earth can renew. But are we taking more? Today, humanity's Ecological Footprint is over 23% larger than what the planet can regenerate. In other words, it now takes more than one year and two months for the Earth to regenerate what we use in a single year. We maintain this overshoot by liquidating the planet's ecological resources. This is a vastly underestimated threat and one that is not adequately addressed.By measuring the Ecological Footprint of a population (an individual, a city, a nation, or all of humanity) we can assess our overshoot, which helps us manage our ecolog

      Rachel Carson's Ecological Critique
Rachel Carson was born just over 100 years ago in 1907. Her most famous book Silent Spring, published in 1962, is often seen as marking the birth of the modern environmental movement. Although an immense amount has been written about Carson and her work, the fact that she was objectively a “woman of the left” has often been downplayed. Today the rapidly accelerating planetary ecological crisis, which she more than anyone else alerted us to, calls for an exploration of the full critical nature of her thought and its relation to the larger revolt within science with which she was associated. Carson was first and foremost a naturalist and scientist. But she was propelled by her understanding of the destructive ecological forces at work in modern society into the role of radical

Such is the case with the school's Center of Industrial Engineering University (FEI) in Sao Bernardo do Campo, in the greater Sao Paulo, Brazil's south-east, which shows the environmentally correct model developed by its students at the Trade Show of the 24th International Automobile. One of the highlights is the hybrid Astra, 25 operated by electric batteries, which in turn are charged by a small combustion engine. FINLAND: Nord Stream Bid Will Come After Ecological Assessment
Applications for building the Russia-Germany Nord Stream gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea will be filed after the environmental impact assessment is finished next spring, a senior official at Nord Stream said Friday. The participants confirmed last week that the project would enter service by the end of 2010, but the environmental impact assessment has taken longer than expected. "We have the environmental impact evaluation ongoing and this will be finished during the spring," Nord Stream permitting manager Sebastian Sass said Friday in Helsinki. "After that we will submit the applications." He said Nord Stream took additional investigation requests from the authorities very seriously, and added that the schedule for a start-up had not been changed. Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva said Thursday after meeting his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Finland was not against the pipe plan, but wanted to study its impact on the environment. EUROASIA: Poland demands a second ecological assessment of the gas pipeline. Nord Stream Pipeline
The decision to change the route of the North European Gas Pipeline (a.k.a. Nord Stream), which is being built by the Gazprom-controlled Nord Stream AG, may slow the project and increased its expense. Poland has suggested that it be given a second ecological assessment. Formally, Poland has no right to demand that, but it influence Sweden, and the pipeline passes through the waters of that country's economic zone. The initial ecological assessment cost more than $50 million. Polish authorities have used the change in the Nord Stream route as an excuse to press another claim against it. On Friday, the office of the Polish Minister of Economy Grzegorz Wozniak released an official statement by him. “We demand that repeat conciliation be begun in connection with he convention on possible influence on the environment,” the minister's statement reads. That is the Pole's response to the change announced last Tuesday in the route of the pipeline near the Danish island of Bornholm. Th

Some of these cooling systems may be good or bad for the environment. Hence this is one responsibility that most people must take into consideration. A lot of us today look forward towards seeing the hidden beauties that countries have to offer. While this does not necessarily point towards nature tripping expeditions, this is attributed to the fact that the dilapidation of majority of the world’s natural resources has deprived people of actually appreciating these once beautiful sights today. Malaysia for example puts emphasis on the natural surroundings and green preservations as part of its tourist package towards the world. This is definitely one of the forefronts of not only pushing the tourism related ventures, but letting the world know as well that there are still green resources up and about in some parts of the world. Icebergs are Ecological Hotspots
Scientists have recently discovered that drifting icebergs allow the surrounding water to absorb more carbon dioxide. BBC writes US scientists found that minerals released from the melting ice triggered blooms of CO2-absorbing phytoplankton. These microscopic plants were then eaten by krill (shrimp-like organisms), whose waste material containing the carbon sank to the ocean floor. It continues: Using instruments that included a trawl net and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) with a video camera, the researchers sampled waters from the ice blocks up to 9km away (5.5 miles). They found a “substantial enrichment” of minerals, phytoplankton, krill and seabirds in the surrounding water up to 3.7km away (2.3 miles) compared with areas with no icebergs. This is a very interesting find. I wonder what it means for scientists studying global warming and climate change. To read the entire article for yourself, click here. Climate change is highly likely to modify how forests function, and land managers urgently need information about how these ecosystem services will be affected. Indian Cities to face ecological stress, says satellite survey
The haphazard way in which the city is turning into a concrete jungle makes it vulnerable to severe ecological stress in near future, says a Lucknow University survey based on satellite data. The survey by the university's Geology department says lack of planning and focus exposes the city to civic problems like water-logging, and eats into the authorities dreams to make it at par with the best of metropolitan India. The satellite survey shows development agencies are making inappropriate planning; in their pursuit for a vertical and horizontal growth, they are not taking into consideration the land-suitability factor. If this goes on, the survey team says, even plush residential colonies would remain vulnerable to water-logging, damage of houses due to accumulated humidity and such civic problems. The departmens study has also listed several colonies in Hazratganj, New Hyderabad, Chowk and nearby areas as likely to face ecological stress in near future.! According to Dr Vibhuti Ra

Indonesia on the edge of an ecological disaster, says Walhi
The Indonesian ecosystem is at stake, with both the country's land and sea resources being dangerously exploited for business purposes, threatening all efforts to preserve them for future generations. Chalid Muhammad, national executive director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), recently spoke with The Jakarta Post's Agustina Wayansari about the issue. We are at the edge of ecological disaster because rapid environmental destruction is occurring everywhere in the country. Our forests have been exploited through destructive logging, industrial timber plantations and massive conversion of forest land into palm oil plantations, as well as through massive coal mining exploration. In coastal areas, the land has been converted into fishponds and shopping centers. Our sea is also facing a huge threat, with only 6 percent of the country's total of 60,000 square kilometers of coral reef in good condition. While only 30 percent of mangrove forests are in good condition.

Review of hundreds of ecological studies says extinctions have begun
University of Texas biologist Camille Parmesan reviewed 866 studies, concluding that extinctions caused by a rapidly warming world have begun, citing the extinction of 70 species of mountain-dwelling frogs. No other specific extinctions are referenced, but they may include more mountain-top-dependent species like the frogs, and possibly polar species like emperor penguins and polar bears, she predicts. She acknowledges that evolutionary changes are underway to compensate for the changing environment, but that they can’t keep pace with the rapidity of the environmental changes. I wonder how long it will be before the changes are dramatic enough to enter our common consciousness?
