The eggplant is considered to originate from India where it grew wild, and was first cultivated in China. It was introduced into Europe during the Middle Ages by the Moors where it soon became popular. Thomas Jefferson, who happened to be an experimental botanist, introduced eggplant to the United States in 1806. It’s called eggplant in America, aubergine in Europe, and brinjal in South Africa

Even though festival season is still months off, free paper Metro yesterday ran a fashion guide to looking "festival-fab" and "Glasto-glam". It included this piece of questionable advice:Crowd pleaser: A big hat is a hit on so many levels: it's a sun visor, you can be spotted from a distance and, if all else fails, it will hide hideous hair.I don't know about you, but whenever I've been in a crowd at a festival, trying to watch a band but having my view restricted by someone in a massive hat, I've been less than pleased. On the plus side, wearing a big hat at festivals makes you an obvious target for projectiles such as mud, beer cans, and bottles of -um- yellow liquid...Don't be a dummy, choose a smaller hatWe've been critiquing Metro a lot recently, notably on its statistics...

See these cheerful vintage cookbooks? Who would suspect that among their well-thumbed pages lurk frightening flavors and perplexing presentations?Join me today as we take a culinary journey filled with wonder—and whipped milk—in Pet Milk’s “Thrifty Tempting Meals for 2 or 4 or 6” circa 1937, and Good Housekeeping’s “Egg and Cheese, Spaghetti and Rice”, 1958.Once you see these eyebrow-raising edibles, I believe you’ll agree—it’s a huge credit to our mothers and grandmothers that good old-fashioned home-cooking still has the beloved reputation it does today. We start with Pet Milk’s first dinner suggestion … “Sausage Cobbler.”Yes, indeed, good hostesses know, no evening meal is complete without sausages ready to entertain the dinner guests in a synchronized swimm
School bus-related fatalities reached a six-year high in Florida last year, and this year looks no better. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the state is on its way to a third straight year leading the nation in bus-related fatals.
Experts speculate that Florida's rate is so high because of its large school districts, which can keep buses on the road longer than in more compact districts in other states.
If there's a silver lining, the pros also say that the accidents usually are not the bus drivers' fault. And generally speaking, buses remain the safest mode of travel for schoolchildren, according to
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
My hometown Duesseldorf doesn’t really bristle with too many exciting cultural landmarks. But on weekends, it seems to inhale bus fleets carrying herds of senior citizen tourists that spend their sunday afternoons gaping at shopping streets and twisted buildings.
This is one of the main travel providers.

With so many small businesses now reliant on Google for a large chunk of their online traffic, the news that Google appears to have banned the German BMW site from its search results for dubious search engine marketing techniques just goes to show how important it is not to push your luck too far when trying to get high ranking for your keywords. It also demonstrates the great power Google now holds over the web search market. BMW.de seems to have received what has become known as the Google "death sentence" - the complete removal of all pages on that domain from Google's search results. When a search engine spider crawled pages from the BMW.de site, it would see a number of keyword-rich sentences, however any visitor clicking onto such pages would receive a Javascript redirect to a glossy brochure page. This is a direct violation of Google's webmaster quality guidelines which specifically ban the use of deceptive search engine marketing techniqes. You can read more about this juicy
Tim Cowlishaw of the The Dallas Morning News thinks that the Rockies are probably going to win the World Series. That's OK. I mean, the evidence suggests otherwise, and as far as I'm concerned, it would be wise to pick the Red Sox, despite all the playoff crapshoot-iness inherent in a series of this nature. But it's not his selection that has me up in arms; it's the rationale, if one can call it that, behind his pick. Observe: It is because of their higher profile, their heavier payroll, their (alleged) home-field advantage and because of the general discrediting of today's National League baseball that the Red Sox are pegged to win their second World Series in four years. I don't see that happening. I'm not saying it's impossible for Boston to beat the Rockies. I just think it's unlikely for any number of good reasons. Here are 10 of them:You said they were good reasons, right? Just making sure, 'cause I'd hate for them to be bad right after you
It came up in Wednesday night's debate on Fox. More than once, in fact.Honor.What "honor" really seems to boil down to for the GOP Jingoists is the belief that we can't leave until we've beaten the savages into a submissive posture and our forces can stride over prostrated bodies on their way off the dune. The plumed helmet adorers take the same view of honor as Sheikh Abdullah Azzam: "History does not write its lines except with blood. Glory does not build its lofty edifice except with skulls. Honor and respect cannot be established except on a foundation of cripples and corpses."Ron Paul delivered in rebuttal the most exceptional line of any debate thusfar: "What do we have to pay to save face?"And just like that, the curtain was thrown aside.Seeking honor in a flag pitching ceremony atop a mountain of corpses is both horrible and horribly immature. Costuming the whole affair in the freshly-pressed outfit of an illegitimate, westernized and U.S.-approved government only adds the a
Braves starter Tim Hudson might want to check the numbers before giving his vote of confidence to a struggling friend:"I think this offseason he'll get things ironed out and get back to the place he wants to be," Hudson said Tuesday. "In coming years, people will look back on this year with him and laugh about it."I can't envision a future in which Giants fans would look back and laugh about Zito's miserable 2007 campaign. Even if he does manage to rebound, (as Hudson himself has) the first year of his enormous contract will hold nothing but bad memories for Zito, and for the disappointed fans who have begun to boo his every appearance. But I can't say I'm too optimistic about Zito's chances. His K/9 has dropped significantly for the 3rd straight year, and his BB/9 has risen significantly for the 3rd straight year. He's heading in the wrong direction. And the move to the weaker National League was supposed to help him.Zito's abysmal performance can't be blamed on bad luck; his
Lets face it ! Tweaking gives us the satisfaction...of having done something to beat the system ! There is that urge, esp amongst die-hard tweakers, to squeeze out the last drop of performance ! Frankly speaking, the best "tweak" is to throw RAM at it ! Its one BIG healthy dose of tonic to perk up your machine.
There are some tweaks which can at best be considered to be of dubious value. Though most of them may not cause much harm, some of them, if applied indiscriminately may actually hurt performance. Some of them worked with older Windows versions, but are redundant & irrelevant now...
More than half of all illegal computer access in 2005 was made using computers at Internet cafes, and about 70 percent of such cases in which suspects have not been identified were from cafe computers, according to the National Police Agency.
