Heath Ledger executed a will in Australia and afterwards he had a child, Matilda. Because Matilda was not included in the will, in some jurisdictions it is possible that she could be excluded from receiving anything from Ledger’s estate. Matilda’s claim to the estate (and the total she stands to lose) is worth [...]
One of the strongly contrasting views held by Obama and McCain relates to the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal site in Nye County, Nevada. Obama opposes the site, McCain wants it open.
An excellent paper is available on this topic entitled How Safe is Yucca Mountain? by Dr. Thomas B. Cochran. In the paper, [...]
Sure, my kids have lots in common, in their features, build, and intellect. But they are also different in remarkable ways.
Dova eats fruit, Adam doesn't. Adam absolutely refuses to go near fruit. At first I thought it was my fault, but when Dova came along loving just about every fruit imaginable, I realized it was a kid problem not a parenting one.

One of the main reasons that I think economists can't seem to agree on how to value the appropriate price for housing is because they tend to take a 30,000-foot view, sort of what you might see when flying over an area. Then, taking out their magic pencils, they wave it over the area and proclaim that prices must fall by a certain amount in order to revert to a long-term relationship between pric
As a massage therapist, you likely wonder which equipment is the best for your business. Perhaps you have seen massage chairs and treatment tables and wondered if there was a benefit of one product over the other. Both massage chairs and treatment tables have benefits, so you will need to evaluate your business’s needs when [...]
This from Education Week:Educators are still waiting for the presumptive Democratic and Republican presidential nominees to put forth detailed plans on education that would allow a comparison of how the two would shape federal K-12 policy over the next four years. But in at least one area, the differences between Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., are clear: education spendi
Today, there is a well-known question about telephone that why our voice change while speaking on phone, let's see why it happensWhy do peoples voices sound different when they are talking on the phone? One major reason for voices sounding different is that the frequency response of the telephone system is limited. The range of the human ear can extend right up 20kHz or more, especially in younger

Sub-prime mortgage loans offer more flexibility than their conventional mortgage loan cousins. With terms determined by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, conventional...

Conventional agricultural practices, adopted in large part over the past 50 years, have stripped the minerals essential for healthy crops from the soil, necessitating the increasing use of artificial help to replace what has been lost. In fact, according to conservative estimates, seventeen insecticides, fumigants, and herbicides are currently being used in conventional wine grape [...]

Inflation has been rising and rising high touching a 13-months record at 6.68 during last week. Depression is not always manifested in children as dejection and anhedonia. Depending on the age of the child, the dominant features may be weeping, irritability or defiance, according to research by Prof Claudia Mehler-Wex and Dr Michael Kölch of Ulm University, Germany. The signs of depression in infants are often screaming, restlessness, and weeping attacks for no clear reason. Preschool children may behave irritably and aggressively, while schoolchildren may be listless and apathetic. The symptoms in adolescents become similar to those in adults. It is thought that up to 3.5% of children and 9% of adolescents in industrial countries are depressive. In particular, the risk of depression increases from the age of 12. In a third of minors, the depressive symptoms subside within three
Women not as likely to experience chest pain, study findsChest pain is still the most common sign of a heart attack for most women, although women are more likely than men to have symptoms other than chest pain or discomfort when experiencing a heart attack or other form of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), a new study finds.Other chest painThe authors also report that women are more likely than men to experience other forms of cardiac chest pain syndromes, such as unstable angina, and they appear to report a wider range of symptoms associated with ACS.For example, women are more likely to report pain in the middle or upper back, neck, or jaw; shortness of breath; nausea or vomiting; indigestion; loss of appetite; weakness or fatigue; cough; dizziness; and palpitations.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/12/women_heart_attacks.html~Sandy G.
In his post of October 23rd, Stuart of Gardening Tips 'n Ideas argues why watering times don't matter, but prevailing advice and my experience argues the contrary: it most certainly does matter. Here's why:First, this: if you water your plants in the morning then they will have time to dry out before nightfall. For at evening, once the sun has set, plants are unable to deal with water around their roots and become susceptible to all manner of fungal diseases. Really?....Now, if this were a true statement then shouldn't we be covering our plants when it rains during the night? And how many of us gardeners have had plants wilt and die from fungal root diseases after enduring months of rainy days and evenings? I'll hazard a guess at none.-StuartWrong guess, Stu. I have had problems with this, sometimes through fault of my own (not having good garden practice), but mostly through weather conditions. Fungal disease is due more to a combination of problems, rather just one of watering.
The New York Times reports that Barack Obama has stated he will start confronting Hillary Clinton more forcefully, “declaring that she had not been candid in describing her views on critical issues.”
In an interview on Friday that appeared timed by his campaign to signal the change of course, Mr. Obama said “now is the time” for him to distinguish himself from Mrs. Clinton. While he said that he was not out to “kneecap the front-runner, because I don’t think that’s what the country is looking for,” he said she was deliberately obscuring her positions for political gain and was less likely than he was to win back the White House for Democrats.
Asked if Mrs. Clinton had been fully truthful with voters about what she would do as president, Mr. Obama replied, “No.”
“I don’t think people know what her agenda exactly is,” Mr. Obama added, citing Social Security, Iraq and Iran as issues on which she had not been entirely forthcoming.
“Now it’s been very
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 — As the Bush administration mulls options for withdrawing forces in Iraq, fault lines are beginning to emerge in a debate between commanders in the field who favor slow reductions and senior generals at the Pentagon who favor cutting the number of combat troops more deeply.
Among others, Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Army chief of staff, are said to be leaning toward a recommendation that steep reductions by the end of 2008, perhaps to half of the 20 combat brigades now in Iraq, should be the administration’s goal.
Such a drawdown would be deeper and faster than Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, is expected to recommend next month, administration officials said.
“If you’re out in Baghdad you might have a different priority for where you want the troops,” an administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the White House has not authorized public remar
Low-wage male Latino workers report less conflict between work and family than white middle-class households, a new study found. The disparity may be due to differences in attitudes about the relationship between work and family, researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine wrote in the August issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology. In contrast, female Latina workers reported clear conflict between the needs of work and of family.Work and family conflict covers a broad arena of issues in which the needs of work and family are not compatible. For example, the needs of a sick child may put a worker in conflict between the needs of family and his or her employer or work-related stress may cause trouble at home."Work-family balance is a popular topic, yet very little is known about the work-family experiences of Latinos, the fastest-growing segment of the work force and a population that frequently finds themselves in difficult work arrangements," lead author Joseph G. My blog readers know I’m a big fan of sewer scopes. In my opinion, they’re well worth the $100 or so homebuyers in the Portland area spend.I’ll get to two examples that highlight their importance. But first, what is a sewer scope? It’s the examination of a home’s sewer line conducted by sending a camera from a home’s clean-out all the way to the city main. The scope searches for root intrusions, gaps in line, problems that wouldn’t be found in a typical home inspection. Now back to those examples.I recently had homebuyers in the Sellwood neighborhood of SE Portland buy a home. At the same time, I had homebuyers go under contract for a home in Beaverton. Both conducted sewer scopes during their inspection period, but the negotiated outcomes were quite different. For the house in Sellwood, the sewer scope showed that the sewer line was fine on the property itself. However, there were huge holes on the city portion leading up to the main; so much so that the inspector ca

If I were to get into the habit of dropping the "m" word frequently, would that earn me PG status?Other than that horrendous word, I do tend to keep it pretty clean around here. But the internet, by its very nature, is a PG affair. And that includes this blog. I don't screen the links in my blogrolls, and I don't assess the political, religious and moral backgrounds of people I link to. Sometimes I link to things because they are offensive. The manner in which people prepare and drink their tea differs all over the world. Some people drink tea plain. Others like to add milk and sugar or lemon juice. A few people like to add liquor, such as rum, scotch, or cognac, to their tea. In Tibet a cup of tea is served with a lump of yak butter floating on its surface. The Tibetans are so fond of this that they drink a great many cups every day. The Tibetans drink at least 10 or 20 and sometimes many more.Another old custom, once typical in Russia, was the use of samovar in making tea. The samovar is a large, graceful urn made of copper, brass, or silver. It holds about 40 cups of boiling water. The water is heated by charcoal. The top of the urn is saucer-shaped to hold the teapot, in which a strong essence of tea is kept steaming hot. Tea is served in a glass or a cup. About one quarter of a cup of the tea essence is used, and the rest of the cup is filled with boiling water from samovar. The Russians usually take lump sugar with t

An annual survey of mortgage closing costs in the fifty states brings up some substantial differences in its 2006 edition. The survey is partial to some extent, because it does not reflect taxes, other government costs or escrow fees. Nevertheless, it can provide an accurate sense of the variation that you will find from state to state on charges that are involved with every home loan settlement. All of the following statistics were based on a fixed rate mortgage of $200,000 for people with good credit ratings who made a twenty percent down payment. These statistics were collected from nine lenders in each state, in the largest city of each state with one exception. Buffalo was substituted for New York City, because the Big Apple is in a league of its own. Nevertheless, New York finished first (or last, depending on your point of view) with its high title and settlement costs. The other states in the top five for mortgage closing costs were Texas, Hawaii, Ohio and Florida. The nati
New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Tourism in the icy Antarctica continent seems to have become a prickly issue with India, which is hosting the ongoing Antarctica Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) here, vehemently opposed to it as against the treaty members.
Noted space scientist and chairman of the 30th ATCM, U.R. Rao said though the Antarctica Treaty talks about free access for all, yet tourism does not fit in that definition.
“Tourism is a real nuisance. Human intervention in the form of tourism is affecting the ecosystem of the continent and it must stop,” Rao told IANS on the sideline of the ATCM, hosted by India for the first time.
“Tourists litter the pristine surface, the ships break the ice and there are so many other issues. You just cannot overlook the matter, especially as the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) has pointed fingers towards human intervention as a major cause of global warming,” he said.

Education Week reports: The U.S. Supreme Court appeared sharply divided last week on whether a student’s banner proclaiming “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” outside an Alaska high school was protected speech or a message that school authorities could suppress because it ran counter to their policies against the promotion of illegal drugs. Justice Stephen G. Breyer seemed to capture the court’s concerns as it heard arguments in Morse v. Frederick (Case No. 06-278) on March 19.“It’s pretty hard to run a school where kids go around at public events publicly making a joke out of drugs,” Justice Breyer told Douglas K. Mertz, the lawyer representing former high school student Joseph Frederick, whose suspension for 10 days in 2002 stemmed from the incident.Justice Breyer said he worried that if he took the student’s side, “we’ll suddenly see people testing limits all over the place in the high schools. But a rule that’s against your side may really limit people’s rights on free spe
Late last year, market research firm MetaFacts dealt Apple's image a body blow when it claimed that almost half (46 percent) of Apple's customer base were age 55 and older, nearly double the share of average home PC users (25.2 percent).Faced with the possibility that nursing home residents in silhouette might scuttle its iPod ad campaign, Apple said that only about 20 percent of Mac users were over 55, while being tactful enough to add that it welcomed customers from 1 to 100.It might have ended there, with the snickering of pundits and those opposed to Apple's monopolization of "cool," which is to say the online music market. But now Internet metrics firm Hitwise has reopened the discussion by claiming that, based on recent traffic data, "the majority of traffic to the Apple Web site came from users under 45, while the majority of traffic to the Microsoft Web site came from users over 35, with a full 22 percent of its traffic coming from those in the 55+ age bracket."
