Could you summarize briefly, as a place to begin? Albert Borgmann: Your scenario shows that today we are dealing with a new kind of information we may call technological information. It was preceded first by natural information—tracks, smoke, fire rings. Such information (it still is all about us) can leave us uncertain as to who the person was that left tracks or built a fire in the distance. Natural

      Building Dialogue
When it comes to the blogosphere, a lot has been said recently about building dialogue. But what does this really mean? The most important part is encouraging visitors to comment. You want your visitors to comment on a regular basis, because the more they get involved in your blog, the better it is for you. Generally speaking, you want to have a conversational style of writing. Of course if you do not have a lot of traffic yet, do not be alarmed if you do not receive a lot of comments, but on the other hand try promoting your blog more. Basically if you have many visitors you want them to have a habit of commenting.

I was a little intrigued when I heard this dialogue. This two young kids actually knew that the "outcome" of being sick was that they could rest at home. And they were thrilled!Have they not settled in the childcare centre and enjoyed their friends' company? I wondered. Or they just simply love the freedom they have at home of not following a time-table? Maybe I would have the answer much later?

The Evolution Of Co-mentoring Relationships: A Quest For Dialogue
My mentoring experience had marked one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences that I had ever undergone. I was hoping to extend a dialogue over a group of people who I had never before encountered, but I had not, under any circumstances, known the kind of mental dialogue that this would foster within me and the kind of relationships that I would inadvertently, and then very intentionally, develop. By overcoming the frustration of an absence of knowledge through the proactive investment of time and energy, I had gone from a stranger in the classroom to a valuable asset, which a mentor should certainly be. The evolution of the relationships that have marked this experience had, thus, presented for me, the true meaning of mentorship, and, subsequently, co-mentorship. In co-mentoring, the “‘co' makes the mentoring reciprocal and mutual. This reciprocity means that over time the mentee and mentor roles may shift; no one is stuck in one or the other for the duration

How To Develop Convincing Dialogue In Your Travel Writing
Travel is all about dialogue and interaction between characters. Too often though, beginning travel writers focus exclusively on one character (the narrator), with little effort made at capturing others’ voices. For example, a beginning writer will describe a place, say a pueblo in Mexico, then add a brief dialogue: “Hola,” said the man. “How are you?” “Muy bien,” I said. And that’s it. The writer will go back to describing his or her adventures. The #1 easiest way to improve your travel writing is to pay attention to the way your characters sound and try to capture their individual voices. In other words, make the effort to write strong dialogue. Dialogue Serves Multiple Functions In the example of shallow dialogue above, the conversation served only a single function, which was to advance the story through an exchange, an interaction. Good dialogue, besides advancing the story, always performs secondary functions. Here are a few possibilities. Tell Backstory

Things To Remember In Relation To A Dialogue by Manoj SharmaRemember that....1) Your life is a living laboratory, for you to experiment and experience till you gain the liberation of enlightenment.2) Human relationships are a dialogue and that when the dialogue is over, the relationship is over.3) For there to be a true dialogue, human being needs to "check in" with themselves and other human beings too. We can loosely term these "check ins" as intra-personal communication and inter-personal communication that involve becoming present to intentions, contexts, contents, feelings and meanings.4) Once people re-discover the value of a dialogue, it is like a re-recognition of an art form they knew and a re-gaining of something they seem to have lost.5) Having a real dialogue, is having a real awakening that once had is impossible to put to sleep, as it is being in the midst of the most sublime of experiences.6) Just because you are having a conversation with another party it may not tantam

In his Encyclical Letter Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), Pope John Paul II wrote that, "In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is..never licit to obey it, or to 'take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law, or vote for it." (EV, No. 73).And in No. 74, His Holiness reminded us that: "Christians, like all people of good will, are called upon under grave obligation of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to God's law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil. Such cooperation occurs when an action, either by its very nature or by the form it takes in a concrete situation, can be defined as a direct participation in an act against innocent human life or a sharing in the immoral intention of the person committing it. This cooperation can never be justified either by invoking respect for the freedom

      Dialogue, Discussion or Argument?
"Argument is the worst sort of conversation." -Jonathan Swift, Irish Cleric and Writer, Jonathan Swift books// A mentor once explained to me that dialogue was the best kind of conversation because it involved collaboration and a sharing of ideas, regardless of agreement. He also said that discussion was a conversation consisting of points and counterpoints, which inherently made it somewhat adversarial. Arguments, he said, were nothing more than a waste of time. I wonder if my mentor read much of Swift's work? I tend to agree with them both. To read the rest of this post, please click the headline and go to the Thoughts On Quotes site.

But let's not forget the joy that can be found getting diagnosed and receiving treatment. They are considered less common, and I think, misunderstood. I saw a reputable neurologist and we still didn't come up with any answers. No one thought it was autoimmune, even with the positive ANA. Reasoned discussion or argument, dialogue or emotion?
In Massachusetts, some homosexual activists have a truly distorted idea of what constitutes authentic dialogue: http://www.massresistance.org/docs/info/know_thy_neighbor.html"A discussion is an orderly confrontation based on a mutual willingness to learn from one another. It involves the presentation of evidence by each party and then a good-faith attempt of the participants in the discussion to come to agreement. Discussion presupposes some degree of rational disagreement between us or at least a lack of consensus. If I agreed with you already, we would have nothing to discuss. In a discussion, I do not primarily want to disagree: I want to know the truth. If I do not think that what you say is true, then I disagree, stating my reasons as clearly as possible and without animosity. The same is true for you: you present me with your reasons. By sharing our ideas freely, we hope to arrive at a deeper truth. In a discussion, disagreement is for the sake of agreement.....An argument (emoti

Thank you to the great and wonderful Spikey who posted this over at the Spinelli Online----Spinelli: Greetings, blond one. I come bearing news, but it will remain unspoken until the unworthy one has taken a hike.Logan: Spinelli -- spinelli, lulu and I were in the middle of a conversation. Can you go sit at the table over there with your little laptop until we're finished?[Spinelli chuckles]Spinelli: You're so dumb. Ok --[Logan laughs]Spinelli: Laptop happens to be the maserati of motherboards, has four gigs of ram, transmits data 30% faster than the best hard drive on the black market, and has a customized graphics card that optimizes my gaming experience. Eunos Heights Family Day cum Mayor's Dialogue
The precinct day event this time round is organised by my Residents' Committee, Eunos Zone 3 RC. After 3 weeks of planning, the RC came up with a Eunos Heights Family Day event which turned out to be a hit among the residents. At 0630 hrs, we began to set up the games stations and some decorations. Soon, the music began to call for the residents. At 0830 hrs, the residents began to start playing the games. I was tasked to manage the "Wheel of Winners" game station. The game was so enticing that the moment the queue started at 0830 hrs, it never ended until after the whole function at 1300 hrs.My Father came and supported my Uncle in managing the durian stall while my Mother assisted me in mine. 2 Aunts came to attend the function too. It's really fulfilling to spend the time with loved ones for a Sunday.During the Mayor's Dialogue, I assisted the notes taker in recording of the dialogue. There are still much for me to learn ...

Carter Center says democracy needs dialogue
"Healthy democracies require spaces for political dialogue and debate to allow divisions about the future direction of the country to be addressed in peaceful ways," the Carter Center said. Along with the above stance, the Carter center has taken firm stances on the issues: 1. Governments should not restrict access to coats and other outerwear if they want their people to stay warm. 2. Quick-flowing freeways require long stretches of unobstructed road. 3. Healthy democracies require elections to better know whom the people prefer as their leaders.

Acciona and Iowa: An Example of a “Technological Dialogue”
Many weeks ago, we reported (link here) that Acciona Energy North America, the American subsidiary of Pamplona-based Acciona Energia, had narrowed down its choice of location for its proposed wind turbine plant in the United States to two states: Illinois and Iowa. Today, Acciona announced that it has chosen West Branch, Iowa as the site of its new wind turbine assembly plant. This will be the Spanish company’s first such assembly plant in the United States and its fourth plant worldwide, with two in Spain and a third in China. According to the West Branch Times, West Branch has been waiting on “pins and needles” for news ever since Acciona announced that it was considering West Branch for its plant site in February. Iowa Governor Chet Culver and the West Branch are no doubt ecstatic over Acciona’s decision. “We are thrilled that ACCIONA has chosen the state of Iowa for its first production facility in the U.S.,” said Iowa Governor Chet Culver. “We welcome the

      Atheist-Theist Dialogue: One Obstacle
Is it possible for atheists and theists to have a meaningful dialogue? Forget for a second whether such a dialogue would be beneficial and consider whether it is possible. If so, what might it look like? As atheism becomes more common, this question will be asked even more frequently by both atheists and believers. I see one fairly massive obstacle to such a dialogue, and I am not sure what it will take to overcome it.The obstacle can be illustrated best with the following quote from Daniel C. Dennett (italics added):"..can we public atheists have productive conversations with believers? Certainly. We can discuss every issue under the sun...respecting each other as citizens with honest disagreements about fundamental matters that can be subjected to reasonable, open inquiry and mutual persuasion... As long as those who are believers will acknowledge that their allegiance gives them no privilege, no direct line to the absolute truth, no advantage in moral insight, we should be able to g

Army of Two Dialogue - What's the Big Deal?
Am I the only one not complaining about the dialogue in Army of Two?   In the past few days I've seen a couple of gaming blogs, most recently Joystiq, complain about some of the dialogue featured in recent trailers (you can see two of trailers in previous posts) and I have to ask - what's the big deal? In the past few months I've played several games that were cursed with extremely poor dialogue and - what's worse - repetitive dialogue which you just can't escape. Here's the thing, Army of Two looks to be going with the "buddy cop" feel.  Think Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, even Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. From both of the early trailers it looks like Army of Two is supposed to be campy.  There's supposed to be obnoxious dialogue and while you may not laugh at all of it, it's there for a reason.  Look at the character's masks for cryin out loud?  they're hockey masks with air brushing. Opening a Dialogue Between Atheists and Christians
I was recently contacted by Steve from HarvestBoston, a Christian blog. Far from condemning me to hell, he expressed interest in a Christian-atheist dialogue. Steve asked if I would be willing to write something that he could share with his readers in which I explained my belief that many Christians were Christian in name only, failing to act in a manner consistent with the teachings attributed to Jesus. He thought it would be beneficial to his Christian readers. I agreed, and you can read his post here. I encourage you to visit and share your perspective with his readers as well as contributing to the comments here. This experience confirms a few things I have long suspected. First, atheists and "real" Christians (i.e., those who attempt to follow the core themes contained in the words attributed to Jesus) have quite a bit in common. Of course, we disagree on the god question, but our similarities should not be overlooked. You see, Steve agrees that too many Christians fail to follow t

Opening a Dialogue With Christians: Lya's Report

Why would she put herself through that? She wanted to see whether a discussion between atheists and Christians would produce anything of value. The results of this experiment were fascinating. She reports on several common misconceptions about atheists, reasons Christians provide for why it is okay to believe things that have no supportive evidence, frequently encountered fallacies, etc. I strongly encourage you to read her excellent post.Note: Lya's post also appears at God is For Suckers!Tagged as: Christianity, atheism

      Tricky Dialogue
I've just started my novel, I'm probably on about 2000 words by now. I'm finding it difficult to find time to write and carry on with my studies. But i'm really enjoying the process of writing and the challenges created. For example, yesterday I wrote a conversation between two people. One person was from the 13th centuary and about to die and the other was from the modern day and was inside the mind of the other person. So, as you can imagine that was quite a tricky one, which took quite a while to get right. I'm still not sure if the dialogue conveys what I want it to. But it was really fun trying to write a conversation where one person believes they are having an internal dialogue with themselves but really they're talking to someone else.I quite enjoy the way that simple ideas like the concept of being able to enter the mind of dead people (in a sort of Being John Malkovich way) can lead to such complex situations.I'm also thinking about joining a writing group or writing cl

      On using dialogue
As a follow-up to my post about dialogue tags, I thought I would offer some links on how to write dialogue. What I found interesting in my research is that what characters say is important, but so is what they don't say. In addition, body language is a very important part of communication -- which lends itself well to avoiding the use of tags. When writing dialogue, remember this:Studies have shown that, in a face-to-face interaction, 58 percent of communication is through body language, 35 percent through how it was said, and a mere seven percent through the content of the message. In addition, how well do your characters listen? Do they always understand the true meaning behind what's being said? Dialogue, and the interaction that surrounds it, can be a great tool to show your character's goals and characteristics as well as a tool to help you manipulate your story. Here are some links:Holly Lisle's Dialogue WorkshopDialogue TipsSpecial Tips On Dialogue For The Romance WriterHow To
