Extreme Sports and Adrenaline Rush Deprivation
EVERYWHERE you look these days there’s a story about Extreme Sports. A young man on breakfast TV this week was talking about taking part in sports like mountain BMX and snowboarding. He seemed a nice enough lad but the dearly beloved scoffed mercilessly at his earnest interview. “Extreme Sports? Didn’t these kids ever have a childhood?” he sneered. Back in the days when it used to snow in the

The Role of Obesity in Sleep Deprivation
Many people have always believed that stuffing themselves with food to take the place of usual sleeping habits has been a good way to combat insomnia and known sleep deprivation issues we hear of today. Obesity has been another area for health concerns and surely, there is an association between sleep deprivation and obesity as studies from the National Sleep Foundation have shown. The whole theory is quite ridiculous. While some people believe in it, it is an unhealthy way of living and making up for lack of sleep which is obviously a need today. Food has its own role in maintaining health and sad to say, it is not a good substitute when it comes to trying to make up for lost sleep. Sleep Deprivation v.297
It wasn't the number of hours I slept, so much...it was the way in which I slept. Having fallen asleep on the sofa for a few minutes last night, I went to shut down my computer before going to bed. My desktop's weird in that sometimes it locks up while shutting down, so I kind of have to stick with it for a minute or two. Well, I woke up just a couple hours ago in the same place, never having made it to bed. Here's a good article explaining why what I inadvertently did was a bad idea. There's nothing in it we don't know already: poor sleep aggravates anxiety disorders. This is two nights in a row for me, and three of four. I had been doing better for a while but this has been an extremely difficult habit to break. Why didn't I go to bed this morning after waking in a desk chair? It was already 8:30am and I didn't want to be in bed all day. As time has gone on I'm realizing it more and more that it was a mistake. Two or three more hours wouldn't have hurt anything. If h

Spiritual Fasting: How To Appreciate Life Through Temporary Deprivation
During the ninth month of the Muslim calender, falling between mid September to mid October, Ramadan is a time where Muslim followers around the world abstain from all food and drink (including water) each day while the sun is up, for an entire month. As I understand, Ramadan is about focusing less on the daily rigors of everyday life, and more on what matters the most: God. It is about the realization that we are all on this planet together, with some more fortunate than others. The aim of Ramadan is to experience suffering, like so many people are forced to live through, and to understand that we are no better than anyone else. All of us are same in God’s eyes. While in Shenzen, China, I fasted with the some Muslim friends for one full day, but the idea stayed with me longer than the 24 hours. It was something I wanted to do again in the future, when the time was right. As it turns out, being stuck in the middle of Hanoi, Vietnam with just a few dollars in your pocket is just su

The sleep deprivation, it is taking over my brain
Only just recently, the weeks of getting 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night in two hour chunks finally caught up with me.  Somehow, the following scene was wildly hilarious at the time and when recounting the experience to friends, I realized you really, really, really had to be there. For posterity, here is Leslie’s brain on sleep deprivation: Figure B: FLYING BABIES! So we got desperate and started walking the baby at midnight. Then? We drag the stroller up the three flights to our room and leave him there. Because? OH-MY-GOD-I-AM-SO-TIRED-UUUGGGHHHHHH. The end. (I may be witty in another three months. Or! Maybe I’ll even be thoughtful! OR! DRUNK! OR! OOOEEYYIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE. I miss sleeping.) Texting Causes Sleep Deprivation In Teens
Getting teens away from the cellphone is quite a battle for parents. Now according to a new study most teens suffer from sleep deprivation solely because of late night text messaging. Text-messaging is contributing to sleep deprivation, said Cora Collette Breuner, a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital.“Most kids go to sleep with their phone plugged in right by their heads,” Breuner said. Every ping of an incoming message is a temptation to pick up the phone.” This is backed up by a recent survey by Teenage Research Unlimited whose findings say that most teens communicate with their friends between midnight and 5 a.m. via cell phone or texting. Sleep Deprivation Leads To Visual Impairment
A study led by Dr. Michael Chee, a neuroscientist at the National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School shows that sleep deprivation leads to temporary visual impairment! “When people are sleep-deprived, they may not be seeing what they think they should be seeing, and it appears that this is what contributes to memory declines following sleep deprivation,” said Dr. Michael Chee “We generally think of memory decline as a result of faulty storage of information,” Chee said. “However, if the information is not properly handled by the visual system, either as a result of a failure to direct attention appropriately or a failure of visual areas (of the brain) to process what is seen, you can forget about the later stages of information consolidation and storage.” Via Scripps News national university of singapore, News, sleep, sleep deprivation, sleep deprived, visual impairment

      Sleep Deprivation Makes Us Fat
The title of the original article is a little less exciting. In Nature (21 September 2006) Helen Pearson suggests to “Sleep it off“. The author summarizes all data supporting the thesis that there is a link between poor sleep patterns and appetite. Arne Astrup, a nutrition researcher, first became interested in this field of research when he met a tired, overweight, young girl who was more active than the average kid. Slim parents, nutritious lunch for school, healthy meals at home and still she was fat. So what’s wrong in this picture? Turns out the girl was a night owl, loved to read and watch TV until late at night and she didn’t sleep for more than seven hours. Her diet? Nine to ten hours of sleep each and every night! The result? Within one month she started to lose weight and her cravings for junk food dropped. David Allison from the Weight-Loss Wonderland says that increasing sleep is a possible way to control obesity that might even be pleasurable. Quite
