      Online Banking User Demographics
The February 2008 Pew Internet & American Life Project's "Online Shopping" report focused strictly on US adult Internet users, and found an even higher level of online banking participation: 53% of respondents said they banked online as of September 2007, equivalent to 39% of the total US adult population. Online banking is especially popular with higher-income adults in the US. Nearly seven

Aging Demographics - The Other Super Secular Trend
The Dow Theorists (and yours truly) have always emphasized that the most profitable way to invest in the stock market for the average American is to invest in harmony with the primary trend. In Dow Theory terms, this would mean investing in a period of severe undervaluation and holding on to your stocks (or dollar cost-average into your portfolio) until the end of the bull market - such as

Demographics point to strong future apartment market
A good catch on the Lansner on Real Estate blog this morning about apartments. The National Multi-Housing Council is predicting that 75 million 'echo boomers' will put upward pressure on rents given that construction (aside from the over-building in the for-sale market) has not kept up with demand. What does that mean? Once the inventory overhang in single-family homes and condos is absorbed (which contributes to the 'shadow rental market'), the opportunity for multi-family investors looks very bright indeed:“The outlook for the apartment industry going forward is very strong,” said Mark Obrinsky, HMHC chief economist. “The nation’s 75 million echo boomers are already entering the housing market, and most begin as renters. … Strong immigration levels add even more demand for r

As we reach a record 16 year high of inventory, the biggest supply since 1991 we are starting to realize that housing was fueled by easy credit. If housing wasn’t fueled by easy credit and went up because of rising incomes and demand as many in the housing industry proclaimed, then why in a few short months has stopping subprime lending and Alt-A loans brought the entire market to a screeching halt? It is becoming more apparent that lax lending standards and easy credit were the fuel that kept this fire burning even though the wood was turning into ash. We were running on fumes. The only thing that would keep this boom going is less restrictive standards and I’m not sure how much lower we can go without our money turning multiple colors and becoming a real game of Monopoly. Unbelievably those in the housing industry and politicians are calling for weaker standards. Here is a list of some of their ideas: · Increase mortgage caps from $417,000. Since anything abov

Podcast User Demographics: The broad picture of a niche mediumIt would be a mistake to think that the average podcast user is a 23-year-old male with a college education and a really big comic book collection. Podcast users are not a homogeneous group, and downloads range from music to religious broadcasts to museum tours. That said, overall podcasting user demographics give a broad perspective on the medium.iTunes accounts for 75% of all podcast downloads, according to Podtrac, so comScore's October 2006 study of iTunes podcast downloaders captured most users. On the whole, podcast downloaders tended to be male, young and educated. Notably, people between the ages of 35 and 54 represented about half of the podcasting audience. While the conventional wisdom says that only young, tech-savvy consumers are downloading and listening to podcasts, there is also a sizable market among 35-to-54-year-olds, indicating that the audience is broader than previously thought. Obstacles - Demographics ...
From MarketWatch:Another nagging concern prominent in the minds of public officials these days is the federal government's failure thus far to waive a 10% match from the state for Katrina recovery efforts, which would save Louisiana roughly $1 billion. To those such as Sen. Landrieu, it's another example of the federal government's slighting of Louisiana since the storm. It follows such incidents as the Federal Emergency Management Agency's slow-footed response to the initial crisis, as well as proportionately larger sums of federal aid that made it to states like Mississippi, considered friendlier to the Bush Administration. Landrieu points out the same 10% match was waived after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, after Hurricane Andrew in Florida, and a slew of other disaster. The per-capita cost to state residents of those disasters totaled several hundred dollars, while Katrina and Rita amounted to $6,700. The normal threshold for waiving the fee is $100, she sa

Are Buyer Demographics Skewing Home Prices?
The Orange County Register reported that the median price for an existent home inched up to $675,000. Some bulls seem to be rejoicing.Like I predicted in a prior post here, the price for existent homes is starting to inch up a bit. My theory is that due to the tightening of non-prime credit, the "typical" buyer has become more "upscale" than in the recent past. Buyers today are likely more affluent and have better credit ratings than the average buyer last year and are also buying larger, nicer and most importantly more expensive homes. I'm not alone on this, Jon Lansner over at the Register would seem to agree. CDG : you can't beat demographics
The CDMA Development Group announced on november that the 200M 1x subscriber mark had been reached last september. And that EV-DO claimed 2.2M subs within 3 months to reach 18 M overall (20 M by year end). A far cry from W-CDMA's 35M, but "the broadband solution equivalent to 1xEV-DO will not be commercial until 2006". So HSDPA is the real competitor to EV-DO now... Which release are we talkin about, doc J ? Calling HSDPA the competitor instead of joining the band - as a few CDMA players will do - doesn't look like a smart move to me. If you agree with CDG's definition of 3G, CDMA is already 73% "3G" while GSM only stands at 2% : there are over 1.5 bn GSM fellas out there, and CDMA figures at the end of the year will be 20 M for EV-DO out of 220 M for cdma2000 out of 300 M for CDMA. You can't beat demographics. The truth is cdma2000 is losing its momentum and 2005 was the year, as scheduled from the beginning*. Qualcomm definitely aren't playing fair these days ; they shoul
