A Swedish study has concluded that women who drink wine on a regular basis cut their risk of dementia. Dementia results in the loss of memory and reasoning ability. The Sahlgrenska Academy at Göteborg University study tracked 1,458 women in Sweden, between ages 38 and 60, starting in 1968. The researchers found female wine drinkers had lower rates of dementia compared to nondrinkers. During the 34-year study, 162 women developed dementia. Women who reported drinking wine every week were 70 percent less likely to develop dementia. Women in the study who drank wine also lived longer.

Dementia is most frequently associated with aging and is, at present, under-diagnosed and under-represented all over the world. Discrepancies in the diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions implemented in the various clinical contexts are significant and consequently, the need for a review of the currently available research evidence and a discussion of different
Dementia in patients who are younger than 45 years of age is often caused by degenerative, metabolic or autoimmune diseases, Dr. Brendan Kelley, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told attendees at the 60th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, being held this week in Chicago.Kelley and colleagues searched the Mayo Clinic database for patients who began to develop dementia between 17 and 45 years that was not related to trauma, brain infections or mental retardation. They identified 235 such patients receiving care between 1996 and 2006. The average age at dementia onset was 34.7 years.Neurodegenerative causes accounted for dementia in 29.8 percent of the group, frontotemporal dementia occurred in 13.2 percent and Alzheimer's disease was seen in less than 1 percent,

A big belly in your 40’s can boost your risk of Alzheimer's disease decades later.
Previous research has already showed that obesity raises your chances of developing dementia, but a new study found a separate risk from storing fat in the abdomen. Even people who weren't overweight were endangered.
Abdominal fat, sometimes described as making people apple-shaped rather than pear-shaped, has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Now dementia can be added to that list.
26-Mar-2008 News item:Middle-age belly bulge boosts risk for dementia later in life, study findsAccording to the study, excess belly fat is linked to higher risk for dementia, in addition to the well known links to heart disease and diabetes. The study points to increased risk but did not determine exactly why it is higher. My hope is that this will lead to other studies, particularly around the concept of controlled carbohydrate nutrition. Excess belly fat is a sign of excess insulin, so managing insulin levels by ditching sugars and starches could very well be proven to help prevent dementia. It appears that more and more, the low fat high carbohydrate diet deemed healthy and pushed at everyone for the past several decades is indeed causing us all to be sicker.

Decline in mental processes is a common complication of HIV infection * Although specific symptoms vary from person to person, which may be part of a single disorder known as AIDS dementia complex, or ADC. Other product names are HIV-associated dementia and HIV / AIDS encephalopathy. * Common symptoms include decline of thought, or "cognitive", such as the functions of memory, reasoning, judgment, concentration and problem solving. * Other common symptoms are changes in personality and behavior, problems of language, and motor (movement), problems such as clumsiness and poor balance. * When these symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily activities, a diagnosis of dementia may be justified.AIDS dementia complex occurs normally as CD4 + drops to less than 200 cells / microliter. It may be the first sign of AIDS. With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the frequency of ADC fell from 30-60% of people living with HIV to less than 20%.

Giving Alzheimer's drugs to people with early memory problems does not delay the onset of the disease, according to researchers.
Aricept (donepezil), Exelon (rivastigmine), and Reminyl (galantamine) are all currently approved for use in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease, and are often prescribed on an "off-label" basis to people with pre-dementia.
However, six clinical trials have all showed that using the drugs does not significantly reduce the progression to dementia.

The practice of acupressure might help calm people suffering from dementia, one study suggests.A Taiwanese study found acupressure might alleviate the agitations that people with forms of dementia like Alzheimer's go through. Acupressure is like acupuncture, only using hands instead of needles.People with dementia are more prone to become angry, yell at others or become violent; they also may take illogical actions such as disrobing in public or wander around lost in the streets. The effects of dementia are a concern for relatives and caretakers alike, as the agitations put dementia patients at risk of injury. The behavior also makes it harder for family members or nursing home staff to care for them. For the study, the Taiwanese researchers enlisted the help of 31 dementia patients living in a nursing home. The 31 people were given a 15-minute acupressure massage twice a day, five days a week. This went on for four weeks. To compare the effects of acupressure versus another theory the r

An examination of the brain of wrestler Chris Benoit revealed evidence of extensive neurological damage at the time of his death. Benoit, a well-known professional wrestler, killed himself in June of this year after murdering his wife and child. At the request of Benoit's father, Dr, Julian Bailes, head of neurosurgery at a top American university, examined the brain and concluded that the extensive damage resembled what would be found in "an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient's brain". Stating on American TV that the damage was "striking and maybe shocking", Dr. Bailes added that "we think we have great anatomical damage here from previous trauma. Whether it had a psychiatric or behavioral expression, we certainly think that's most likely."
While the most likely cause of the damage is from the numerous concussions that Benoit sustained during his wrestling career in Japan and America, he was also known to be a heavy steroid user.

Use Ginkgo Biloba to Starve Off Alzheimer's and DementiaBy: Rudy SilvaArticle Source:ArticleToGo.comDementia, Alzheimer's, and other mental diseases are accelerated by the,* The lack of blood to the brain* The lack of oxygen to the brain* The lack of minerals and vitamins to the brain* The lack of glucose to the brain* Increase of toxins to the brain. The lack of blood to the brain is caused by arteriosclerosis - plack buildup along the arteries causing them to narrow. Arteriosclerosis occurs when you have a diet that causes damage to the artery walls promoting cholesterol and other minerals and nutrients to patch up the damage. Over time, as this patching continues, this area will become narrow and in some case blocks the flow of blood. As early as possible it is always recommended that you research what a health diet is. Find a diet that will minimize damage and inflammation in your body. Starting a healthy diet at any age is helpful but the sooner you start the better.Ginkgo Biloba
A study published in the journal Neurology, found that older women who have trouble falling asleep are more likely to experience memory loss and mental decline, than those who sleep well.
Researchers at the University of California studied almost 2,500 women over a period of 15 years. At the start of the study, the group had an average age of 69, with no signs of memory problems.
Cognitive tests were administered over the length of the study, and sleep disturbances were assessed at the end. Although there was no association between cognitive decline and total sleep time, those who showed memory problems were almost twice as likely to have trouble staying asleep.
Women who showed mental decline were also one-and-a-half times as likely to have problems falling asleep, being awake for more than 90 minutes during their sleep cycle.
Researchers speculate that a likely link between memory loss and sleep disturbances may include an underlying cause, such as the brain changes seen in Alzheimer

DSM-IV DEMENTIAS DUE TO OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS 294.1 Dementia due to HIV disease (Code 042 On Axis III) Dementia is impairment of short- and long-term memory, abstract thinking, and judgment with personality changes, severe enough to interfere with work, normal social activities, and relationships. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been shown to affect the brain directly by crossing the blood-brain barrier on two types of immune cells—monocytes and macrophages. Cells within the central nervous system (CNS) have been found to have express CD4 receptor sites for HIV entry into cells. Although several hypotheses have been proposed, it is not known exactly by what mechanism neurological dysfunction occurs. Neuropsychiatric symptoms may range from barely perceptible changes in a person’s normal psychological presentation to acute delirium to profound dementia. Because of the associated immune dysfunction, secondary brain infections may cause further damage. Studies have show
