Art industry sees need for united defence against forgery

NATO leaders on Thursday (3 April) decided to develop the "structures and authorities" to carry out a new coordinated approach to cyber attacks. The new approach will aim to prevent and counter situations like the one seen in Estonia in summer 2007, when cyber terrorists crippled strategic network infrastructure, including banks. The new tasks will be carried out by the Cyber Defence Management Authority (CDMA), the launch of which was expected at the Bucharest Summit. However, the launch of the new author

      Sicilian Defence Online Chess Opening
The Sicilian Defence is a chess opening that begins with the moves 1.e4 c5.At the master level, the Sicilian is the most popular and best-scoring response to White's first move 1.e4. One sixth (17%) of all games between grandmasters, and one quarter (25%) of the games in the Chess Informant database, begin with this opening. Grandmaster John Nunn notes that the reason for the Sicilian Defence’s popularity “is its combative nature; in many lines Black is playing not just for equality, but for the advantage. The drawback is that White often obtains an early initiative, so Black has to take care not to fall victim to a quick attack.” The earliest recorded notes on the Sicilian Defence date back to the late 16th century by the Italian chess players Giulio Polerio and Gioachino Greco.By advancing the c-pawn two squares, Black asserts control over the d4-square and begins the fight for the centre of the board. This move thus fulfills the same purpose as the move 1…e5, the next most

Why Self Defence Obsession can make you look like a Coward

He was cute, but he was also a jerk. I didn’t do it for very long. I wish I had quit sooner than I did. My ex husband was really big into self defense but that was just because he was a big fat coward. well he wasn’t fat, he was a body builder but I think he was so obsessed with self defense and body building because he was a coward. He used to always buy self defense products all of the time and made a big deal of making sure I had pepper spray on my key chain and stuff like that. Now that I think back to it I actually think its really annoying.  let that be a lesson to you men.  Obsessing over self defense can make you look like a little bit of a coward if your dating.

Defending Against Breast Cancer: Arming yourself with knowledge is your best defence against breast cancer.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW. Breast cancer is common. The older you get, the higher your risk of breast cancer. At age 30, the risk is one in 6,000 per year. At 40, one in 1,200; at 50, one in 550 per year. Early detection is the key. You can detect a lump through a breast self-exam, a breast exam by a health professional or a mammogram. Most breasts are lumpy during a woman’s menstrual cycle. If a lump doesn’t go away after a full cycle, see your doctor immediately. Remember, in many cases, a lumpectomy followed by radiation is as effective as a mastectomy (a mastectomy removes the entire breast, a lumpectomy removes a section of the breast). WHAT YOU CAN DO. Maintain a well-balanced diet. Reduce fat and eat more nutritious, high-fibre foods. Exercise on a regular basis. Learn how to examine your breasts and examine them monthly. Know your breasts well enough to notice a change. Schedule annual mammograms. A mammogram can detect a lump two years before you can feel it. SOURCES O

      HP Starts Two-pronged Defence
The battle for inkjet cartridge mindset and consumers’ money has long been a contentious issue as the OEM printer manufacturers strive to protect their very profitable piece of turf in a market worth $25 billion worldwide. Printer manufacturers successfully play on fear, uncertainty and doubt (the so-called FUD factor) while their competitors play successfully on lower prices and environmental benefits, despite the FUD propaganda. The latest battle in the war of words takes the form of a two-pronged strike by HP. The first arm of its pincer movement was the recent publication of a comparative report claiming better page yields and higher quality results from HP brand cartridges compared to refills. The firm’s second strike against the refiller market was the announcement that its new cartridges now come in two sizes, with one costing much less (and printing fewer pages). The authors of the comparative report claimed that “European research firm Innovationstechnik prov

The Science of Self Defence: A Treatise on Sparring and Wrestling
By Edmund Price - 1867PrefaceIn giving the following pages to the world, we do so with a certain degree of anxiety oscillating between pride and ear-pride at our maiden effort-fear for its success. We began to write this work in 1860, but the war breaking soon after, compelled us to defer the undertaking to a more auspicious season. And now that Military arms are no longer fashionable, doubtless "Old Nature's" arms in adjusting quarrels or in self-protection will be the only weapons needed. Therefore as a natural consequence, their practical development and scientific use should be earnestly cutivated. Some readers may inquire why our work needs a preface, and many devoted to light literature may consider all prefaces bores. With all due deference, we esteem this an error, for from a preface you may glean the author's intentions and opinions in reference to his work. The prefaces of Sir Walter Scott, are models of humor and historic truth and beauty; those of Bulwer instructive and i

Defence clicks as Arsenal fire warning to United
Arsenal sent out a warning to their title rivals that they absolutely mean business by coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield overnight. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard opened the score in the 8th minute with a well-struck free-kick from the edge of the area but Arsenal snatched point after Cesc Fabregas finished cleverly following some excellent play from Alexander Hleb. A draw was the least that the visitors deserved after largely dominating the play and hitting the post twice in the second half, but they also relied on some great defending from William Gallas and Kolo Toure and some smart goalkeeping from Manuel Almunia to ensure they returned to the top of the table. Arsene Wenger made one change to the side that destroyed Slavia Prague midweek, surprisingly dropping Theo Walcott to the bench in favour of a five-man midfield that featured Emmanuel Eboue on the right and Alexander Hleb playing centrally behind Emmanuel Adebayor up front. When training self defence techniques, the only way a technique will become effective is by drilling it over and over again for many months, even years so as it becomes second nature. After drilling a number of techniques the student will also gain the ability to flow from one to the other, if the technique being applied is not working, instead of trying to force one that has been defended well by the opponent. Now in order to become proficient in applying self defence techniques, like already mentioned, they have to be drilled infinity times. This requires something important, THE PARTNER YOU TRAIN WITH MUST NOT RESIST THE TECHNIQUE BEING APPLIED!!! Of course after a great amount of practice drilling the techniques, your partner can resist slightly allowing you to flow from one technique to the other, creating a more realistic situation, but while initially practising the techniques it is very important that your partner allows you to PRACTICE. Many times i have witnessed, and exper

Indonesia gives ST Telemedia extra week to prepare defence
Indonesia's anti-monopoly watchdog, the KPPU, has given Singapore Technologies Telemedia an extra week to prepare its defence in response to allegations that the company has engaged in anti-competitive practices.Despite the postponement, ST Telemedia is not optimistic about the final outcome of the hearings before a five-member panel of the KPPU. Kuan Kwee Jee, Senior Vice President of Strategic Relations & Corporate Communications, ST Telemedia, said: "We know for sure three are not going to vote in our favour. And we have no idea whether the other two new members are going to vote in our favour. But since it's by majority vote and you already have three against us, it is not hard to imagine the outcome."ST Telemedia is one of two subsidiaries of Singapore investment company Temasek Holdings that have stakes in Indonesian telecom operators. It owns a 42 percent stake in Indosat, while Singapore Telecom owns a 35 percent stake in Telkomsel.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.bl

DEFENCE UNIONS, RADCLIFFES AND LEGAL REPRESENTATION
Of late, I have had a huge number of emails asking me what I think of this particular law firm. As the premier law firm that advises doctors, it has failed miserably. Infact, in 1998 it failed me. They though know about their flawed representation and the fact that it has taken me nearly a decade to clean up their mess. They have nothing to say in this matter because they got their money from the MPS and I got nothing. The fact though is this, when I was a junior doctor - editing a controversial website wasn't on my agenda and infact it was the last thing on my mind. Sadly, we were forced to write about all our experiences to assist others who find themselves in exactly the same predicament. My previous solicitor in the libel case ( R Pal v GMC) told me that litigation is often mistaken as justice. I suppose like medicine it has its flaws - it can only go so far. Since 1999, I have had some good luck with solicitors - in that 3 of them have represented me well. The others haven't but

      Defence and counter attack timing
Imagine your opponent is standing, facing you in a right lead stance (southpaw) and he is about to go for a roundhouse kick with the back leg. Firstly he would probably make some kind of movement with his arms (either slightly raise his left arm, or just drop his front arm). Next, maybe a slight pivot with the front foot, or moving it slightly forward, then his knees would bend as he lifts his back leg of the ground, whilst still moving his arms in a direction natural to him to generate momentum. Finally his kicking surface, (shin, instep) would be swung into his choice of target (probably thigh, midsection or face). Now all of this would happen in about 1 second and most beginners would start there defence or counter attack when they see the leg swinging in towards them. The best timing to start your defence or counter is WHEN YOU SEE THE INITIAL MOVEMENT. In this case it would be as soon as you see his hands move, or if not then, then no later when his front foot moves. This is the

Malaysian Ministry of Defence, our very own Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry?
It is interesting to note that our Malaysian Ministry of Defence had been featured quite extensively lately by our online alternative news providers and of course in our political opposition parties’ campaigns. One by one, allegations of scandals had been thrown to the Malaysian Ministry of Defence. If we go back as far as the year 2000, the allegations themselves can be written into one juicy novel. Heck, that novel could even outclass Sidney Sheldon’s best mystery novel in any day!In recent years, we have three alleged scandals involving the Malaysian Ministry of Defence: The ongoing murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaaribbu was allegedly linked to the government’s purchase of Scorpene and Agosta submarines from France, Questions had been asked on the recent purchase of 18 Sukhoi SU-30MK and recently Our head of Public Accounts Committee Dato’ Shahrir Abdul Samad expressed his suspicion that some critical government records may have been purposely destroyed (th

      Self defence breakfalling
This is just a quick comment on break falling. Last week when training nage komi (full throw repetitions) my partner was on the receiving end of a harai goshi. As he broke the fall by slapping his LEFT hand on the mat, he gave no thought at all to his head. As a result his head hit the floor pretty hard and although it was a matted surface, he still was slightly dizzy from the fall. Two little pointers regarding head guarding, Always keep your chin tucked in, mouth shut and tongue pressed against your top jaw.Use your non break falling hand to cover the side of your head so if you does lose control of your head it will be your hand that you hit rather than the floor.

DEFENCE UNIONS - WHY DON'T YOU REPRESENT DRs Kate and Gerry McCANN
The Daily Mail today screamed a few headlines about Drs Gerry and Kate McCann. A emotive comment cited " I refuse to believe the McCann's are guilty". I believe this issue is now turning into the OJ Simpson trial, a media frenzy that has the entire population hooked on the issue. The UK refuses to believe that anyone is guilty. All newspapers are taking sides. The Times though cites some independent and quite brilliant reporting on the issue. Putting all the forensics to one side, I would quite like to know whats in the intercepted emails and phonecall transcripts. Nevertheless, the news that they may have to delve into the cool 1 million to fund their legal teams ( and lawyers cost money) has not made them popular. I am positive any lawyer would represent them pro bono if they approached the right people. Moreover, there is always legal aid if they have no finances. Thirdly, there is always their own defence unions whom I am positive will love the limelight. Whether it is the Medical

Just As The Defence Sorts Itself Out, Ewood Do That Again
A point that could have been more but is probably the outcome that was deserved judging the overall performance. Judging by the results from the other games, that particular outcome is not as bad as was feared before the game; Chelsea are no further ahead of us, Liverpool in the same boat and Manchester United under pressure following on from what is apparently their worst start for fifteen years. It does not detract from the fact though that it was another sloppy goal that has cost Arsenal two points. There is a knee-jerk reaction to the culprit because evidentially it is no longer an out of character mistake. Jens Lehmann is probably enduring the worst spell of his Arsenal career. There are two decisions that Arsene has to make as a result. Firstly he has to take a view as to whether or not this error and the one against Fulham are an indication of the onset of the terminal decline in the German’s career or merely a temporary loss of form requiring a spell on the sidelines to k

A ver cuántos hacéis vosotros.

Defence Is The Central Question To Be Solved
A quiet day on the news front yesterday. Perhaps the most ‘tantalising’ comments concerned the importance that Arsene placed upon the retention of Philippe Senderos. Complimenting him on his abilities in the air, Le Boss noted that these were important in England. It seems a throwback `to decades past for him to say that but invariably when you consider his point, it is true. Damn his logic! It seems also that he learnt much about playing his cards close to his chest during his career for whilst he is positive about the contribution Senderos can make, it is impossible to say whether or not Philippe will participate for more than the odd game when Gallas or Toure is unavailable or, well, basically, knackered. There is no doubt that Senderos had a good weekend; he was comfortably the most consistent of the central defenders at The Emirates Cup. However, it seems inconceivable that either Gallas or Toure will be absent from the Fulham game unless fitness reasons prevent thei

      In defence of liberty
Stumbling and Mumbling has some suggestions on how to spread a more assertive liberalism amongst fundamentalists:So, we need to sell liberalism in a different way. Here are five suggestions:1. Liberalism is what people choose. Net migration flows are from fundamentalist societies to liberal ones. Some people think the UK has a problem of too many immigrants. No-one ever thought Afghanistan under the Taleban had that problem.2. Liberalism delivers the goods. You might reply that people come to the west for the money, not for the liberty. But the two go together. Liberal democratic societies are richer societies.3. Liberalism and wealth can promote virtue, as both Benjamin Friedman and Deirdre McCloskey argue. The notion that the west is decadent owes much to the salience heuristic - an excessive inference from Big Brother and advertising hoardings - rather than to a fuller assessment.4. Liberalism permits religious fundamentalism - you can go to church or mosque as often as you like -

Australian Defence Minister Admits Oil Interest in Iraq
The Australian Defence Minister, Brendan Nelson, has said that securing oil is an important factor in Iraq, according to the BBC. He says that maintaining what he calls “resource security” is important and that: Obviously the Middle East itself, not only Iraq but the entire region, is an important supplier of energy, oil in particular, to the rest of the world… Australians and all of us need to think what would happen if there were a premature withdrawal from Iraq. It’s in our interests, our security interests, to make sure that we leave the Middle East, and leave Iraq in particular, in a position of sustainable security. Prime Minister John Howard responded by saying that “We didn’t go there because of oil and we don’t remain there because of oil,” and that “A lot of oil comes from the Middle East - we all know that - but the reason we remain there is that we want to give the people of Iraq a possibility of embracing democracy.&rd

Games Thursday : Desktop Tower Defence 1.5 - Changes and Improvements
Have to admit first that I'm a very late starter in the genre of tower defense games :( I only heard of Desktop Tower Defence (DesktopTD) by Paul Preece / HandDrawnGames when gHacks announced that version 1.5 of DesktopTD was available. Since version 1.5 is not playable offline, I tried out the 1.21B version of the game to see the differences to see if I can make do with the older version. I know there's a brief list of changes at the official site but I can idenify the changes and improvements faster when I play them both. The interface in 1.5 is definitely much less cluttered and looks a lot better. The turret placement cursor is now updated in real-time so you can select the turret you want even when you have insufficient gold (cursor turns red) and it will automatically turn green for placement when enough gold are available. The turret selection panel on the right side also automatically light up in green for those turrets that can be built. The best addition to the interface is t
