April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Japan's consumer prices rose at the fastest pace in a decade in March as companies passed on higher costs of gasoline and food to protect profits. Core prices, which exclude fresh fruit, fish and vegetables, climbed 1.2 percent from a year earlier after gaining 1 percent in February, the statistics bureau said in Tokyo today. Bonds fell as traders increased bets that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates from 0.5 percent later this year to quell inflation. Governor Masaaki Shirakawa and his colleagues will probably stick to their policy of gradually increasing borrowing costs in their twice-yearly outlook next week, former central bank official Masaaki Kanno said. ``Core prices will continue to gain, spurred by crude oi

The S&P500 closed yesterday at 1,315.22 points. The first time the S&P500 stood at this level was April 1999. This past decade in the US stock markets has been a long-term investor’s nightmare. I’m referring mostly to retirement savings and households of course. The following chart is of the S&P500 index since 1999:The rule of thumb in long-term saving is that stocks, over time, are the best investment option available as volatility gets averaged out and all that is left is to enjoy the average returns over the years.Another rule is that the younger you are the riskier your investments should be since you have enough time to average out poor performance. While financial advisors work according to these rules the academic world has had problems substantiating them on a solid

. . . actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down.
Few bands in today's highly competitive and saturated music market can remain popular without having new material for fans on a regular basis. But veteran indie electronic rockers Portishead have managed to overcome those odds for nearly a decade. On April 28th, Portishead will release their first original collection of new material since 1997's self-titled 'trip hop' classic, which propelled the band to celestial heights, and kept them going for years, thanks in large part to a loyal fan base and numerous performances at big music festivals over the last few years. The new album, Third, (which may refer to the fact that this is only their third album since 1994's classic Dummy) has been kept under tight wraps in hopes of preventing a leak, but just to make sure they don't miss having some co

QUOTE: We need to build 2,000, 3,000 nuclear reactors for it to take on the kind of role that coal has today.WHO: Dr. Makhijani, ...if we cast ourselves forward to 2050 or 2060 and we've made, as a nation, as a world, significant investments in nuclear power, what's wrong with that?In order to make a significant impact on climate we have to build 2,000, 3,000 nuclear reactors for it to take on the kind of role that coal has today. Probably more, considering the growth in China and India. That means one nuclear reactor every six days or so. That means we have to build two or three uranium enrichment plants every year. First of all, nuclear is the lazy answer. It fits into the structure we've got. It's the way we've always done things. We've got 95-percent centralized ele
Where's Duke Nukem been the last decade?Filed under: Culture, PC, First Person ShootersThe door swung shut, his familiar frame lumbered in, sunk into the couch, like nothing had changed these last ten years. "Where have you been?" we screamed. "It's been ten years!""I'm looking for some alien toilet to park my bricks. Who's firrrrst?""So that's it? Evidently, the boys at ShackNews have gotten over their abandonment issues (any pointers?) and taken a calendar-heavy look at the game's progress (or lack thereof, knowhutamean?) over the last decade of development. Most telling: the two E3 trailers, in '98 and '01, that show plenty of gameplay in what would almost seem to be a nearly complete game. Once you're done reading that, take another look at The Duke Nukem Forever List, an incredibly sobering breakdown of
It’s quite an amazing thing to wake up one day, look at your spouse, and realize that both of you have been married for 10 years.
Because when you think about it, 10 years is a long time, isn’t it?
There we were, young ‘kids’ fresh out of school for no more than three years or so (I was 27, and she 24), committing to each other for life on 19 December 1997 not knowing much about the journey we’d undertake together.
Looking back on the past decade, we’ve had our share of fights, difficulties, disappointments, joys, and triumphs. Along the way, we bought our own abode, tried to have a child (without success, fortunately in some ways but that’s another story), and most importantly, learned what marriage really means and entails.
And after all these years, it’s still amazing that we still possess those little qualities that spice up our daily lives, like how we still have that spark, that ‘psychic’ connection with each other, and
In “7 Costly Retirement Savings Mistakes to Avoid,” I had mentioned that waiting too long is the number one mistake. I am afraid I didn’t demonstrate it well, so here is a different look at the concept.
Assume that in each scenario, the investment grows at 10% per year*.
* Based on historical data, investment gain averaging 10% per year is feasible.
Investor A started saving and investing $4,000 per year when he was 25 years old. By the time he was 35 years old, he had already saved $82,000. When he is ready to retire at the age of 65, he will have accumulated $2.1 millions dollars.
Investor B didn’t start early. When he saw that investor A had accumulated $82,000, he wanted the same for himself. At the age of 35, he started savings and investing $4,000 per year just like his friend. When he turns 65 years old, he will only have $800,000. In essence, a decade cost him over $1.3 million dollars.
Investor C also wants in after he witnessed his friend succ

Indonesia's credit rating was raised by Moody's Investors Service to the highest in a decade after the government trimmed debt and boosted its currency reserves. Moody's lifted Indonesia's foreign-currency rating one notch to Ba3, three levels below investment grade, the company said in a statement today. The rating, which was last increased in 2006, hasn't been as high since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis and now matches that of Vietnam and Turkey. A higher credit rating will help President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's government reduce the cost of its proposed dollar- denominated bond sale next year. A lower interest burden will allow the government to spend more on roads and power plants in Asia's third-most populous nation, and lift incomes of the 37 million people who live on less than $18 a month. According to a report by The National Investor, the demand for housing in Abu Dhabi, is likely to surpass supply for the next decade, spiraling rent rates."We expect a situation of oversupply to threaten the value of local property market," reports the Investment Bank. The Bank advised that investors who are interested in getting the best out of Abu Dhabi property market, need to stay away from single, direct equity investments, which will bring significant risk and volatility.About 140,000 units are expected to be supplied in the market by 2009 and 2010, in comparison to just 10,000 during 2008 and 2009. Also, the demand during these three years, could average to about 18,000 units per year."The next two years are likely to be slow in terms of residential supply, and hence rents would continue to remain stable," the Bank said.Companies such as Sorouh Real Estate, and Aldar Properties, are developing about $121 billion worth of properties in Abu Dhabi, reported the Bank.

Eternal Sonata is epic beyond the magnitude any role playing game has achieved in likely a decade. From the artistry of the graphics and sound to the intricacy of the character and plot development, Eternal Sonata succeeds in far surpassing everything else. When I first played the demo on Xbox Live I knew I had to have the game, but even so; I was still, with my jaw on the floor, blown away by how amazing a game it is when I finally got a hold of my own copy. I had intended on writing this review a few days ago, but I just couldn’t pull myself away from it. That’s how good it is; so good I played through it twice before managing to pry myself away from it for long enough to write a review. (more…)

Part One and TwoI threw away the letters. The photos. The especially sweet emails I’d printed out. I kept the books though. No amount of heartbreak could make me give up the books. It turns out though, that I gave up hope a wee bit too soon…To be Continued…...and also, as it happened, a wee bit too late.I remember the moment so clearly. I was sitting in front of my roommate's IKEA desk unit, tip-tapping away on her iMac. It was February, and the windows in our ground level basement suite were frosted over with the delicate fern like patterns that so often would absorb my attention. Part OneAs our characters played out their amusing storylines on the screen, Dave and I gradually got to know each other through private messages, and long emails. Handwritten letters and packages followed. There were even a few confusing phone calls during which we mocked each other’s accents and laughed a great deal. Laughter, after all, is universal. Dave’s accent? Barely intelligible. His hand writing wasn’t exactly stellar either, but oh how his letters got me laughing! Especially when he drew stick figure diagrams teaching me all about football. Within months, I was a staunch supporter of Everton, and would stay up into the wee hours watching Premiere League football. My parents were more than a little worried.I remember clearly the first packet of pictures he sent. My imagination easily steals back into that once locked vault, and plays them like a slideshow in my mind. I remember his pose, always with that cheeky smile, his red hair topping his lanky frame. US demand for nurses to remain high in next decade--officialBy Nikko DizonInquirerLast updated 08:37pm (Mla time) 08/23/2007MANILA, Philippines -- The demand for nurses in the United States will remain high for the next 10 years, according to an official of the US National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). An initial group of examinees took the National Council Licensure Examination at the first NCLEX testing center in the country on Thursday. "The nursing shortage is still significant and research still indicates that there is a future anticipated shortfall of more than a million nurses in the US," Casey Marks, NCSBN associate executive director, told reporters in an interview. The shortage is worldwide, according to Marks. In the US -- a preferred destination of many Filipino nurses -- "there is certainly a significant demand for a long period of time," he said. With opportunities looming ahead, Marks said he would encourage more Filipinos to take up nursing as a profession

A new chemical compound which could remove the need for patients to undergo certain invasive diagnostic tests in the future has been created by scientists at Durham University.Research published in the academic journal, Chemical Communications, reveals that this new compound could be used in a 'chemically-sensitive MRI scan' to help identify the extent of progression of diseases such as cancer, without the need for intrusive biopsies. The researchers, who are part of an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded group developing new ways of imaging cancer, have created a chemical which contains fluorine. It could, in theory, be given to the patient by injection before an MRI scan. The fluorine responds differently according to the varying acidity in the body, so that tumours could be highlighted and appear in contrast or 'light up' on the resulting scan.Read more...click herepermalink TechnoratiPhilippine Nursinghttp://Philippinenursing.blogspot.com121550fce60
Remembering my first year of university is like trying to wring moisture from a slightly damp cloth. I can feel it there, palpable in my memory, yet with all my twisting and shaking, only a few drops fall free.I had just turned eighteen, but I had the maturity and life experience of a twelve year old. Idealistic, eager, excited, and nervous. It’s a wonder I didn’t collapse, quivering, at the foot of the massive cement stairway leading to the quadrangle. Instead, I bounded up the stairs two at a time, breathless and bouncing as I achieved the summit.I vaguely remember the feeling of being lost. Multiple times. Of arriving an hour early for classes for fear of getting lost and not making it in time. Mostly though, what I remember is fear. Fear of the general, pervasive variety. Comprised of a myriad of specific ones and too overwhelming in its entirety to be picked apart. In short, I was terrified. Pretty much most of the time.Except when I was learning. Like a newly forme

Today EUR/USD hit 1.3738 mark renewing its maximum since 1995. So we are at the almost twelve years maximum now and the possibilities for going even farther are getting higher and higher. Not many reasons for such a strong Euro rally for today. The only good ones I can think of - oil prices rising and some Eurozone financial leaders speaking of support for an expensive Euro. Other than that - only some really powerful bullish speculators could EUR/USD in such a dramatical way. Anyway, it's a good time to be in the market and get some more pips on falling dollar when EUR/USD breaks the 1.3800 level.
If you are prone to believe in luck (and my leanings tend to venture
that way if I am near a casino slot machine), then sit up and take
notice.Today is your lucky day - 7/7/07. This is a once in a decade
event. With a combination like that, who can lose? If you have
especially good luck today, let me know about it. Disclaimer, if you
stub your toe or other injury befalls you today, it's your own bad
luck...
The rapid growth of the world's biofuel industry is likely to keep farm commodity prices at high levels in the next decade as it will boost demand for grains, oilseeds, and sugar, a major study said on Wednesday. The study, co-written by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said biofuels would have a major impact on the agriculture sector between 2007 and 2016. "Bioenergies have become a key factor in the functioning of agriculture markets," Loek Boonekamp, a senior OECD official, told reporters after the release of the study. "In the medium term we believe that they could lead to prices on international markets rising quite considerably, at higher levels than what we had predicted in former outlooks and above the average of the last 10 years," he added. Boonekamp said that farm prices, mainly grains, would likely rise by 20 to 50 percent over the next decade. He added that although the long-

We watched AFI's "100 Years, 100 Movies" last night, and host Morgan Freeman explained why the institute was repeating its famous poll of moviemakers 10 years after the original special aired.
It's been a decade, he reminded us. A lot has happened in the past 10 years.
My breath caught in my chest. I was 25, just on the cusp of meeting Mr. Chicken. My parents had just moved out of my childhood
The Guardian (via Tim Blair) reports that a special task force of police and prosecutors has been formed in Britain to deal with the crisis of Muslim honor murders that's been taking place there for more than a decade (I never refer to these horrific cases as simply "killings". This is MURDER of helpless females we're talking about here, not hoodlums and terrorists gunned down in self defense). It remains to be seen just how convincing this'll be, especially when you consider the exact number of victims:Home Office statistics suggest that there are 12 such murders each year. However, according to research, the true figure is much higher. At a conference in Southampton last week, police chiefs revealed that they are re-examining 2,000 deaths and murders between 1996 and 2006 to establish whether they involve honour killings. So far, 19 have now been found to be honour killings. A further 20 involved some element of “honour violence”.Got that? Two-thousand victims, and maybe more.
Something tells me that if George W. Bush had listen 2017 as the probable date the war in Iraq would end from the very beginning, we would've never invaded that country. If you're looking for a reason why the war is unpopular and the President's approval rating is at 29%...there ya go.14 years is not a cakewalk, it's from birth to freshman year of high school...think about it.
Peugeot to release diesel-electric hybrid by the end of this decade Last week, we learned that Honda is ditching its slow-selling Accord Hybrid in favor of a Tier 2 Bin 5 diesel engine for the 2008 redesign. Although the "clean diesel" engine isn't likely to show up on the options sheet until the 2009 model year, the anticipation of a Honda mid-sized sedan with great fuel economy and decent low-end torque has automotive enthusiasts abuzz. French carmaker Peugeot, however, is combining the technology that Honda is abandoning on the Accord with a diesel engine. The diesel-electric hybrid powertrain will first be used in the recently announced 308 hatchback. Peugeot claims that the diesel-electric hybrid 308 will achieve over 70 MPG on the European cycle (58.29 MPG US). This compares with the 65.7 MPG (54.70 MPG US) figure for the Toyota Prius on the European cycle. The release of a mainstream diesel-electric hybrid could throw some water on the fuel economy flame wars th

When Arsene Wenger took charge of the Arsenal Football Club in October 2006 he was relatively unknown in the English football community. Since his arrival, however, Wenger has transformed Arsenal into a successful, multi-national side with a strong emphasis on stylish, attacking football.
As a passionate supporter of Arsenal for the past ten years I have had the privilege to witness Wenger’s entire tenure as manager of the club. In that time I have watched the club win the Premier League title three times (1998, 2002 & 2004), the FA Cup four times (1998, 2002, 2003 & 2005) and reached both the UEFA Cup Final and Champions League Final once each (2000 & 2006 respectively). I have seen many great players come and go from the club from all over the world and been spoilt by some scintillating attacking football.
So without further ado I am happy to present, playing in Wenger’s favoured 4-4-2 formation, the Arsenal Team of the Decade.

Five years ago, Derby County were relegated from the Premiership, and this post appeared on a blogspot blog.
End of!
Funny beginning a new blog with an end of one era, but that what it is. The end, finalament, etc. Today was my last day in school EVER which is certainly scary, without a shadow of a doubt.Today we went out with a bang however. The day was all day relaxed atmosphere (not as relaxed as tomorrow though), whereby photographic flashes were going on and off, and my cheekbones have been very sore due to the amount of smiling I have done. More pages have been filled in in my leavers book, and I myself have filled one roll of film with snaps of many people. So, am I sad that I’m going? I don’t know. It hasn’t really sunk in at the moment. I think now that I’m 18, and I feel that now I should grow up and move on. School (while brilliant), wasn’t without it’s faults, and now I want a few years of answering to nobody, as such.
