I have received a couple of e-mails about the Datacenter Physical Security Blueprint with comments that my blueprint is too movie-like, and that it is way too costly to implement. So i did a little shopping around, and i requested budget prices for every element of my Blueprint (budget prices are usually higher then purchase prices, since they are a non-obligating quotes for budget estimation). Here is the math. All prices are in US dollarsSecurity equipment9 CCTV cameras with infrared sensors - 130$ a piece = 1,170$8 Glass break sensors - 45$ a piece = 360$8 Motion Sensors - 30$ a piece = 240$4 KeyCard readers (with combined electronic/mechanical lock and open/closed status sensor) - 150$ a piece = 600$2 KeyCard readers with Keypad (with combined electronic/mechanical lock and open/closed s
A very important aspect of Information Security is physical security. A significant amount of security incidents are found to be performed utilizing some vulnerability of the physical security. So, here is a set of rules to create a blueprint of physical security of a IT department and data center for a company. The system room must not have windows. Ideally, it should be in the center of the building. All equipment that is not used must be stored in dedicated storage space, away from production environmentAll high security spaces should be monitored by CCTV cameras.Access control zones must be implemented, to create a security barrier as well as provide a log of access activities. These are created by doors opened by electronic key cards or multiple-factor authentication. All windows should
Max
Hackers in Turkey have attacked more than 5,000 Swedish Web sites in the past week, and at least some of the sabotage appears linked to a Swedish newspaper’s publication of a disparaging caricature of Islam’s prophet, an Internet company and a media watchdog said Sunday.
Around 1,600 Web sites hosted by server-provider Proinet and 3,800 sites [...]

Sun proudly claimed it had solved all potential server problems when it shipped its project BlackBox server in a shipping container. But it left out an obvious California challenge: earthquakes. So Sun shipped off one of the devices to a testing facility where it was subjected to some of the worst trembles that have been known to hit the golden state. Sun put it to test by exposing a container full of server racks to the force and motion of the epicenter at a 6.7-magnitude earthquake and keeps working just fine. The earthquake was simulated using a six-degrees-of-freedom hydraulic platform and data collected at Northridge, CA on January 17, 1994. Everything was up and running and the only cause of failure was caused by 'power cords coming out'.via gizmodo
Organizations are increasingly evaluating and implementing liquid cooling solutions to meet the heat challenges of blade servers and high-density computing. Liquid cooling solutions utilize air/liquid heat exchangers to provide quiet, uniform, effective cooling. Many IT professionals list cooling as a top issue in data center management, as excess heat and high temperatures can shorten equipment lifespan, cause system downtime, and negatively affect equipment performance. As organizations add blade servers to their IT infrastructure, server rooms and datacenters demand more electricity and produce more heat, with some high-density racks exceeding 30 kW and some experts estimating up to 50 kW per server rack, within the next five years.
Tapi setelah diteliti, apakah seharusnya demikian.? Kita lihat contoh kasusnya.

Heat is an important factor that significantly affects IT performance. Traditionally, most datacenter managers have relied upon the use of ambient air cooling solutions (alternating cool and hot rows) to meet their cooling needs. However, ambient air cooling solutions are often unable to handle high heat loads, are not targeted, and can be cost and energy inefficient. As power-intensive applications and server densities have increased, datacenter managers are seeking new ways to dissipate heat bi-products. Accordingly, the use of liquid cooling solutions has become an increasingly popular part of many datacenter cooling strategies. You can best mitigate heat issues if you have a thorough heat dissipation plan and invest in scalable cooling solutions. Below is a short overview of the two main approaches to data center cooling ambient air cooling and liquid cooling. Remote power management solutions allow administrators to remotely power cycle servers and devices and troubleshoot problems, both locally and remote, from any location in the world. This provides administrators with the ability to manage servers more efficiently and reduce server downtime by affording direct access to power control. Remote power management solutions are also used by many businesses and organizations to manage servers at offices and branch locations where there are no IT staff members, offering cost-efficient “lights-out” operation at those sites.Remote power management solutions add increased functionality over traditional metered and basic power products. While many power distribution units (PDUs) can provide basic information and amperage readings, only intelligent or ‘switched’ PDUs truly provide the benefit of outlet-level management. To read the full article on remote power as one of the datacenter's top challenges visit:http://www.42u.com/benefiting-remo
Project Black Box from sun is promising to deliver 146 teraflops, hold 2 petrabytes of storage, 7 terabytes of memory, and be globally available nearly instantaneously, in a shipping container. I love the scenarios page with photos of how these could be used.
