The odds are pretty slim that I’ll be charged by a bison (the heaviest land animal in North America). Since I’ve had my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser, I’ve only had to deal with a few electrical issues, the Center Diff Lock, the Window Actuator Motor and the Fusible Links from the battery. The first prevented the transfer case to lock up in four wheel drive, the second prevented the window from rolling up, and the third prevented the engine from starting.
Now that I’m a year into the ownership of the Land Cruiser, I’m onto my fourth wiring issue. The engine will simply not start. It started last Thursday when I made a run over to the Cle Elum River near Salmon la Sac. I had one episode where it would not start for about two or three minutes and then it started up fine for the the rest of the trip. On Saturday, it happened again, this time in the grocery store parking lot. This time it would not start until after about ten minutes of trying. Having one successful storage box build behind me for my old Jeep YJ Wrangler, it was time to build a storage box for my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser. The storage box I built for my Wrangler was very simple. It was basically a box with one very large divided drawer that was bolted into the cargo area in place of the rear seat. In the storage box, I was able to store and provide easy access to all my tools, spare parts, recovery gear and spare fluids. Having all the above gear stored in a storage box allowed me to carry additional stuff (tent, sleeping bag, food, cooler, clothing, etc) on top of the storage box, basically doubling the cargo space. I knew the transfer case was a rebuilt unit so I figured it would be something simple such as a switch or a relay. Little did I know that I would spend hours trying to troubleshoot the problem. Hopefully this article will walk you through all the diagnostics needed to check the complete center diff lock (CDL) electrical system so you can figure out the problem much faster than I did.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Wheels on my FJ80 Land Cruiser
Ever since I purchased my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser, I knew I wanted to replace the factory Toyota 15 inch alloy wheels and 31/10.50 BFG AT tires with larger tires and wheels. The primary reasons for wanting to complete this upgrade included:
The “C” load rating of the 15 inch tires were being pushed to their limits with the weight of a fully loaded and accessorized 80-series Land Cruiser. I didn’t want to trust them very much longer on a 6000 pound vehicle.
There are very limited tire sizes that will fit a 15×7 wheel. I wanted to run narrow 33 inch tall tires.
I wanted to increase the ground clearance by a inch or more. Every inch in the vertical direction helps with a 112 inch wheelbase.
The 31/10.50 tires looked very small in the abnormally large wheel wells of a 80-series Land Cruiser running the medium weight Old Man Emu (OME) suspension. Even my wife thought the tires looked small.

Toyota’s latest land basher is sophisticated on and off the trail.
Do you remember how it felt the very first time you engaged cruise control? That momentary sense of no longer being in control, that the car had assumed command? That’s how Toyota’s new crawl mode in the 2008 Land Cruiser feels at first. You select the function, take your foot off the brake, and the car proceeds under its own management.
Of course, in crawl mode (which functions only in low range) the new Cruiser moves forward very slowly—there are three speed choices on a rotary switch in the dash, and none of them is faster than a walking pace. The cool trick is that the vehicle will maintain that pace through thick and thin, adding power to get the truck over big moguls and using the traction control and downhill assist to negotiate holes and grades. All you need to do is steer.
See, there is still a job for the driver in this vehicle. The job is mainly to enjoy the huge ability this truck

I find that a lot of girls on campus likes these bikes because every day that I walk to class, there are around 20 to 30 girls riding one. I live in Arkansas. The only beaches her are covered in large round river rock and course sand full of fresh water shells and are along the edges of mountain streams, rivers and lakes. There not exactly ideal spots of riding a beach cruisers. But as the site says, you don’t have to ride on a beach to have a beach cruiser. But there are plenty of places to ride a bike in Arkansas. If you live in town you can ride along the sidewalks and save yourself gas money by not commuting to work. Some people put baskets on the back of there bikes and use them to bring small amounts of groceries back and forth.
I wonder if I could put a big enough basket on mine or maybe attach a cart to it or something then I could haul buckets of rock and gravel back and fourth from the dig site. The prospect of using a wheel barrel to get things back and fourth is not that appealing. It can be difficult to push a heavy one up and down those hills. These are photos of my installation of a second battery in my 1992 Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser.
Because the installation of a second battery isn’t as simple as adding an additional battery tray (like it is on the 93-97 80-series), I decided to install a sealed battery in my newly built cargo box.
For the isolator, I chose a WranglerNW system that consists of a switch, harness and relay.
From the engine compartment, I ran 1/0 welding cable to the rear cargo area.
Within the box, I installed a Blue Ray marine fuse block and installed 5 12 volt outlets (2 in the rear and 3 on the console). I also hard wires the power cord for an ARB Fridge and my CB.
While working on the wiring under the hood, I also replaced the cable from the main battery to the starter and all fusible links to the battery.
I’m not happy with the off-the-shelf marine terminals on the main battery and will be replacing those in the near future.

I finally got around to start building the cargo box/drawers for my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser.
My goal was to have have a place for my dog to ride as well as having quick access to tools and equipment without unpacking everything I had strapped down. I also needed a place to house an auxiliary battery since its not an easy task to locate a spare battery under the hood of an FJ80 powered by the 3FE engine.
Future photos will include the drawers and wings between the box and interior panels.

When I purchased my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser, I knew there were issues with the power windows. Except for the drivers door, all the windows rolled up and down, not perfect but they worked. Then one rainey day last Fall, I rolled down the rear door window and pop, the window would not roll up any more. Luckily, I wasn’t too far from home.
As a temporary fix, I wedged a door shim between the glass and door panel. There it stayed until I had a dry day to diagnose and fix the problem. Here are the steps I took to disassemble, diagnose and repair the problem.
After reading a few threads on ih8mud.com and with my factory service manual in hand, I was ready to tackle the problem.

More interestingly, Toyota plans to increase the price of their hot-selling, recently redesigned RAV4 in order to curtail demand-- and meet the CO2 target. The changes to Toyota's lineup illustrate the difficulty faced by smaller manufacturers like Porsche, who don't sell low CO2 machines that "average out" their gas guzzlers' emissions.
