News stories around the web that never quite make the MSM. Jesse Helms is finally dead, but the MSM won't call him out for what he really was; the Dow Jones is crashing faster than anyone cares to admit; and Wal-Mart is racking up more debt from being sued for unfair labor practice, then people are actually aware of. Happy Reading!
Racist, homophobe Jesse Helms is dead

The violence which has ripped apart South Korea over the issue of importing beef from the United States continues to upset its government. President Lee Myung-bak assumed a tough response to street demonstrations and candlelight rallies which he regards as disruptive to law and order. I was just talking to a girlfriend last night about her feet. She has a stubborn callous under her foot, and she wants it gone. Now. She mentioned Ped Egg which is a little device seen on television that targets hyperkeratosis, or thickening of the skin. In other words, your foot callouses.A few reviews about Ped Egg turned up good news. But most critics say the product works best on lightly callo
The European Union is increasingly swept up in the anti-immigrant hysteria which impacts many parts of the world. It just passed new legislation which allows EU member nations to hold undocumented migrants in detention centers for up to 18 months and then to ban them from entering EU territory for up to five years. The [...]

It’s been a struggle trying to figure out how to protect the cows that took to the streets of San José back in March. When they first arrived, they were free to roam. But, as people flocked to the downtown area to see and photograph the cows, some also came to pet, ride, and even vandalize these urban pieces of art. Just days into the Cow Parade, artists gathered to make repairs. (See video bel
“I fell in love.”“You’re wasting your time with that stuff.” I knew it but then again I wasn’t sure. That’s the worst part about it, not being sure. I was sure about love, I just wasn’t sure about the waste of time.“Maybe.” I said audibly and thought about it for a minute.“You know Z, the day I get it right is the day I die.”“I know.”My mind was flooded with something. It was flooded with possibility. I felt stupid and alone and good. I was happy.“I’m totally smitten. And the best part is I’m never going to meet her. We agreed to that. It's 1984 in MaineNew Bill in Maine Makes "Visual Sexual Aggression" a CrimeIt might be 2008 in the rest of the USA, but in Maine, it's 1984.A new bill in the Pine Tree State would make it a crime to peer at children in public. It's been asserted that some legislators can justify making any action a crime--as long as they add the magic words "for the children" to the mix. This Maine bill adds proof to that assertion.State Rep. Dawn Hill, D-York, is the head cheerleader for a bill only a fan of police state actions could love. Or a police chief. Her involvement started when Ogunquit Police Lt. David Alexander was called to a local beach to deal with a man who appeared to be observing children entering the community bathrooms. Because the state statute prevents arrests for visual sexual aggres

To my surprise, Blogs Is Watching is listed as one of the Top "Urban" Blogs according to GreasyGuide.com. I don't like for the BiW blog to be too categorized, but hey, we appreciate the mention and will continue to strive for exellence. No malwareHere’s a good change from the usual security news that depict one worm or Trojan as the apocalypse, turning PCs into zombies and proud members of botnets. No claims and demands, no message, just a single picture of what seems to be a powder detergent box with a good punch line: Brain Wash: Removes even the TOUGHEST Propaganda.Security firm F-Secure was the one with the find, and detailed that the means by which this came to be was that CuciOtak most likely modified the DNS information for the www.malaysiangp.com.my website and by that redirected all visitors to the spoofed page. This might come off as wrong, but I sincerely admire this guy who made n

Cracks are already appearing between Singaporeans and the new settlers who have come as permanent residents, not just between different ethnic groups, but also within races. Ill feeling towards foreigners is beginning to surface in this most unlikely of places - cosmopolitan Singapore - attributed to the record influx of immigrants. By tradition, Singaporeans with their own migrant history have been open about foreigners from east or west, which has led to a recent mass arrival of settlers and visitors. More than a million have arrived, mostly during the past decade, and although they have brightened the economy, they are also starting to incur a social cost as well as increasingly sparking friction with locals. Despite land reclamation, Singapore remains a small city, one of the densest in the world. The pressure is testing the tolerance level of Singaporeans, who are struggling to cope with a widening income gap and rising prices. Already one third of the 4.68 million people
Recently, while perusing an old issue of Reader's Digest, I came across something so unexpected, so shocking, so bizarre that I decided it was up to me to tell the world.
The March 2002 edition of Reader's Digest features a front cover on the upper right-hand corner of which is the face of Bruce Willis. At the very top of the same cover is a red bar featuring a message in white text which reads "Reverse Your Memory Loss." Goody! Let's do that.
Turning to page 101, we can see the headline, which reads, "Total Recall," and beneath, "How to get it — well, most of it — at any age. By Anne Underwood and Russell Watson." Here's something important on the next line. It says, "From Newsweek." So, the story was originally featured in Newsweek, and Reader's Digest decided that it was worthy of making it into their exclusive, clean, and inoffensive pages.
Reading the article, there's nothing majorly out of th

"After all, harassment is harassment regardless of the mechanism or tool." The ordinance basically covers all forms of electronic communication, i.e. the internet, email, text messaging and paging. A maximum fine of $500.00 and up to 90 days in jail. The St. Charles Journal article went on to name the persons Megan's parents believe are responsible for the online hoax, neigh

A video about mega fires. As spring arrives earlier due to climate change the wild fires get bigger and reach higher altitudes. A one degree temperature rise in the western parts of America has caused four times more fires. I wonder how soon we will have uncontrollable fires in the Amazon forests. The day we see that on our screens our descent on the spiral of escalating disaster will be virtually irreversible. The fires in California is giving climate change yet another face. This time the face is meaner and more immediate. Chaos of fire and orange skies, this frightens people. Ordinary people are starting to realize and understand the state of emergency we are in. It is starting to sink in.At work I have my lunch in a rather boring conference room. The rehab staff, consisting of me, the physical therapist, and three occupational therapists, always sits grouped together at one end of the table. The remaining chairs around the table are filled by six nurses. The nurses are all above fi

The Egyptian government has banned the annual social gathering of members of the Muslim Brotherhood as part of an escalating effort to destroy opposing voices. Hundreds of members of the organization have been arrested in the past few months as Mubarak demonstrated his authority. In 2005, the Muslim Brotherhood won 25% of the vote for Parliament, but Mubarak doesn’t agree with their ideas. Last week, four editors were sentenced to one year prison terms for defaming President Mubarak. One had the nerve to write that 79 year-old Mubarak might be in poor health.
Unemployment is rampant in Egypt, particularly for college graduates. In an effort to deal with the problem, the Mubarak government announced a new employment initiative. College graduates will be hired to push around carts and distribute bread to the poor.
Cracks may appear in Manhattan apartment marketby Reuters - 8/12/07 snips:At the end of July, Deanna Kory had a bidding war on her hands. Three potential buyers were vying for a luxury apartment the Manhattan real estate broker was selling for a client at a $4 million asking price. On July 27, the end of a week when the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index suffer its worst one-week percentage drop since 2002, she called the winning bidder with the good news. The next day he withdrew his bid for the Upper West Side home. There is no sign of a downturn in sales figures for now, but Kory's experience may be an early sign of weakness in the robust Manhattan market that could be vulnerable to struggling stock markets, hedge fun losses and newly cautious lenders."I guess he called his mortgage person and found it wasn't going to be as easy as he thought for him to get what he wanted. He got nervous and decided not to proceed," said Kory, senior vice president of the Corcoran Group. She also s

Ok, what to do on a slow night, take one power outage in San Francisco that has gutted everyone interested in Web 2.0 and oh basically the power players on the internet, and see what kind of mayhem can be created.
In case you didn’t know, chunks of Silicon Valley were out this afternoon because of a power outage, either caused by a Squirrel, a Drunk worker on a bender, act of God, or otherwise.
A whole number of other incredibly wonderful Web sites shared our fate today and there is a whole lot of blogging documenting the rather peculiar impacts of the power outage and the failure of a popular co-location facility to provide back-up power. TechCrunch, ValleyWag, Mashable and others have their takes on the mini-disaster. Ironically, a bunch of us here at Technorati relied on a distinctly 19th-century technology (radio) and our reliable friends at KCBS radio to find out what-in-the-sam-hill was going on; they were very helpful! Bring on the mayhem, and this
