This is my fourth week off work, and aside from when I've popped in to keep him informed and hand over the doctor's note after appointments signing me off I haven't been in touch with the office at all. It seemed odd, therefore, that he was calling me for an update now. So, just before I had a shower this morning, he rang back. Apparently there was a meeting last week of the people in charge of the organisation - for obvious reasons he had to let them know what was going on, although everyone else just knows I'm off sick, not why. And he tells me they're all quite worried about me, which is nice. Sort of. Sports Predictions: the Art of Covering your Ass
Predictions are a big part of sports reporting and journalism. Fans expect that long-time writers have built up a wealth of knowledge over the years and should be able to offer credible forecasts backed up with detailed and believable reasoning. The writers themselves do little to dispel that notion and will on occasion play up the myth that “it’s really not as easy as it seems.” A necessary and almost subconscious practice of those in the non-technical professions is to validate their own worth by hinting at what a rarified field they operate in. However, the unpleasant reality that gnaws away at all spewers of half-baked predictions is that the nature of the game makes consistent accuracy almost impossible. Which is why hedging is such an important part of the hockey writer’s arsenal. When the reality of your guesses are shown to be equivalent to that of a retarded baboon randomly plucking teams and numbers out of a hat, you can legitimately refer to the li

Keep in mind that at certain times people will be more receptive to what you have to say than at other times. The where refers to the place of your encounter with the other person. Keep in mind that the other person will feel different emotions within different environments. You must approach them within an environment that is going to be helpful to your communication. The how refers to how you will go about communicating your message to the other person. Keep in mind that it’s not so much what you say to the other person but how you say it. However, choose your words carefully especially when discussing sensitive matters. Another factor to consider is the whom. How much? and where does it say so in the Torah. The truth is that there is no simple verse in the Torah to point to with all the answers. Like all the laws of Judaism, we don't learn the halachot from the verses in the Torah (there are very few verses that actually give us laws, and even those are limited or expanded (or both) by the Oral tradition. In other words, it is always an unfair question to ask 'where does it say so in the Torah' because almost all of the Torah laws (and absoutely all of the Rabbinic laws) are from the Mishna, Talmud, Tosefta, Gaonim, Rishonim or Acharonim. There are explicit rules in the Shulchan Aruch, but for a proper overview and understanding of the laws (from the sources) the best book (by far) on the topic is: The Modest Way (Women and Mitzvot Series)He brings all the relevan

Video Covering the Basics Day #1.5
Whoa, feature mash-up. I'm not sure that it actually works out to #1.5, but is anyone paying attention to my numbering system? Not unlike Pitchfork's rating system, it's just there for show. On to the videos! This is a rather cool Ben Folds cover of The Postal Service track "Such Great Heights". I mostly just love how random all the instruments are. The mailbox covered with a towel being beaten by a wooden spoon is a good example of this.I've heard this song covered by a few people; notably, Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley. This is Allison Crowe's take on "Hallelujah" and her voice sounds rather great. Leonard Cohen approves, I'm sure. He is Canadian after all, and we're pretty nice people.Of Montreal + David Bowie = musical gold. Check out this acoustic cover of David Bowie's "Starman" done up by Of Montreal."There's a starman, waiting in the sky/He'd like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds"Last, but certainly not least, give it up for George W. Bush co

      Finding bugs and covering cracks
The software I’m testing is working quite well though it’s not yet flawless. Performing two stock pushes consecutively of different stock to the same destination correctly resulted in 2 transfer files being created. The first one was processed OK but Oracle got itself confused and managed to delete the secondtransfer file. When I pointed this out to the developer he went straight on the defensive, which is OK, but did accuse me of deleting the second file. Eh. ‘So how do I do that?’. I was running his system. It was his system that generated the situation where the file was deleted. It’ll be easy enough for him to replicate that defect so we should see some work done on that.  Seems that some of the other issues I’ve spoken to him about are also being addresses. There was one where a report was being produced before the data processing had been completed and therefore was not 100% accurate. Where the transfer of data was OK then the report was

      Covering the year 2006
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Some Says (2006) One of the most beautiful cover record of last year "The Brave And The Bold" teaches us how a beautiful cover record should be. It's been more than one year, and i still love to listen this record. Thanks to Tortoise for bringing such glorious guitars, composings, thanks to Will Oldham for such a nostalgic voice. Definitely an essential work. This song [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

      Still covering the loss
Your dirty car could support a good cause at Chamberlain High in Tampa, where the senior class is still trying to make up the money lost after their faculty advisor was accused of stealing almost $10,000 from the students. Police say teacher Cheryl Foster-Lawrentz deposited money from student fund raisers into her personal account at Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union. She has resigned, facing charges of grand theft. While the credit union replaced the $10,000 that police say was stolen, more money remains missing from senior class accounts. You can help students earn it back by letting them wash your car at the Carrollwood Burger King on N. Dale Mabry Highway. The fundraiser is set for this Saturday and Sat., March 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free fries are available and Thrivent Financial will match the funds, at $.50 to the dollar up to $500, for the two events. - Letitia Stein, Hillsborough County education reporter

Here's an internet radio link to a broadcast covering the earthquake...
It's pretty much the only radio station on Oahu going. The link requires you to allow popups to hear the broadcast. I could only get one local privately owned radio staion, literally a guy with an antenna on a cherry picker up the hill, when I was driving earlier. As the power comes back in all areas I'm sure there will be more info available.Interesting... I looked at the stats and I'm getting huge numbers of people hitting this site looking for Kona earthquake information... I hope some of them are divers and will remember me. Later, Steve
