My May contributions for the brokerage account totaled $386.22 which is less than what I was expecting. I am going to close some dead bank accounts that I have floating around including one at Christian Community Credit Union. When the interest rates were high, i was getting about 6% on my CDs, now that the interest rates have reset, its costing my money. I have managed to transfer the amount of
First thing is first, I’m a big fan of the 401k and not contributing to it if your company offers it is your first big mistake in investing. Your company is giving you a raise every 2 weeks when you use it. Who doesn’t want FREE money? You’d be surprised…

(Screen Capture) >...No other presidential candidate allows such an easy channel for illegal campaign contributions. For example, John McCain and Hillary Clinton do not accept donations from abroad without a complete, written documentation packet sent via postal mail........>>
A war of words has been unleashed between Democratic Presidential candidates Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton since Obama began airing an advertisement that states he has not taken any campaign contributions from oil companies.
FactCheck.org took Obama to task for this claim, saying it was misleading. According to FactCheck.org, a law has been on the books for over a century that prohibits
A multiracial bus queue in Slough, Berkshire.Guardian photograph by Karen Robinson Here's an article from The Guardian that indirectly takes to task a recently released report, which claimed that immigrants in the United Kingdom contribute little or nothing to the country's economy. It's a highly dubious claim since immigrants, contrary to the general perception, pay taxes and spend their money just like everyone else and keep businesses thriving and the economy chugging along. David Rose's report on the town of Slough reminds me of a small town in New Jersey that passed an ordinance banning landlords from renting apartments and houses to undocumented immigrants. The result was that immigrants left the town in droves and many small businesses were shuttered because they no longer had c
Slashdot Linux Stony Stevenson writes New Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst has hit out at enterprises bemoaning that billions of dollars are wasted each year because 95 of companies won t share code Speaking at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco he said his company must take a larger role in urging enterprises to participate in open source projects and in some cases coax code contributions out of companies that have made in house improvements He now feels Red Hat should lead the way It should be part of Red Hat s job to define development in a new way and get companies to work together on shared projects he said The joint development projects would be designed to cover non competitive parts of an industry with individual companies still focused on their own competitive business
Unfluence.primate.net - Mapping Political ContributionsWhat it doesThe upcoming elections means that large quantities of money are being thrown about as candidates try to gain a foothold in the hearts of American tax payers. Unfluence is a new web application which traces the money trail. It takes contribution data and builds network maps linking political parties, contributors and recipients. Items are represented as following: circles indicate a political candidate running for office; green circles correspond to their contributors; grey arrows signify the direction and size of the money flow while the size of each node or circle is in direction proportion to the total amount given/received. Each graph may be downloaded and linked to. The statistics are derived from the Nationa
Thanks to reader Nicolas for providing a gentle nudge to write a post on a private members' bill that was passed last night that would allow Canadians to deduct contributions to RESP plans (Registered Education Savings Plans). The bill (which is not final), proposes that contributions up to $5,000 per year (and up to a lifetime maximum of $50,000) be deductible from the contributor's income.I have not found anything that indicates whether the CESG (Canadian Education Savings Grant) would still be awarded but my guess is that since there is stiff opposition to this bill (from the Conservative Party), the grant would be eliminated. Fingers crossed for both though! :)For an Ontarian in the highest tax bracket, an annual $5,000 contribution to an RESP would yield $2,320.50 in tax sa
My company offers both a 401k and a Roth 401k account for all vested employees. The regular 401k was all that was offered prior to 2007. Along with contributing to the 401k or Roth 401k up to at least the employer’s match, it is a good idea to maximize contributions to Roth IRAs, as well. [...]

An Oak Brook businessman who has extensive financial and personal ties to the former head of the Chicago mob has given more than $200,000 in contributions to Illinois politicians through personal and corporate donations -- with Gov. Blagojevich receiving the most money, $35,000, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.
Among other top recipients of donations from the businessman, Nicholas Vangel, a
Another year almost over. 2007. Gone. Pretty soon, the dreaded tax season will be upon us. Now is a great time to consider offsetting your tax burden by making charitable donations. If you do already, consider rearranging your allocations towards the environment. Here at IDOG, we know its a worthy cause! There are many wonderful green charities that can help us fight climate change and the challenges that face us as a result of it. Here are a few that I found worth mentioning:Carbonfund.org. Their motto is "Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can't." This organization, along with their partners, offers individuals and businesses alike the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing "offsets." By doing this (which is considered a tax deductible contribution of course), your
If you happen to work for a very large company, chances are they have a program where they will match employee contributions to charitable donations dollar for dollar. So in other words you could double the amount of money going to your favourite charities! It's one of those things where when you hear about it you think, "Hey, that's a great idea!" but then it gets filed away and forgotten. More often than not, when a company newsletter comes around reminding you of the program you think about the $20 or $50 you've given to charity and how you forgot to take advantage of the free-matching! You probably say to yourself, "I'll remember for next time!" and then next time comes, and you forget again? I certainly fall into that boat.So here's my suggestion: Send an email to your HR person to ask two things. 1) Is there a charitable donation employer-matching program available? (if you don't know) 2) Ask if you can get 2 copies of the form. Even if you don't

Dan asks:
I'm debating if I should start an IRA or not. The problem is that all contributions would not be deductible. As far as I understand this, it means that any capital gains sells would not be taxed until I was ready to withdraw.
My question is about withdrawing money from this account. Are the contributions I made post-tax taxed again upon withdrawal or only the earnings? It would make

Jake writes:
Dear Gina,
I understand that I can contribute $22,000 a year or $110,000 in a 5 year period into a 529 without triggering gift tax. Does $22,000 a year use up your gift tax to that individual for the year, or is the $22,000 a year in addition to the normal yearly exemption?
Thanks in advance!
Jake
My response:
Hello Jake!
For 2007 you are allowed to gift any one person up to
Drew McManus is featuring several contributions from bassists this month for the Take a Friend to Orchestra initiative on his blog Adaptistration. I was just featured yesterday, and Bill Harris (from Facilitated Systems) was also featured earlier this month.I'd like to direct people's attention to Milwaukee Symphony double bassist Roger Ruggeri's post from earlier this week. Roger is a multi-talented individual with a great perspective on the music biz, and I think that people will really get a lot out of his essay.

There was a time when people thought that the Firefox web browsing software application would not become a very popular web browser despite being very easy to use and despite being a lot better than other web browsing software applications due to the fact that its usage would be restricted to computer programmers only. The idea of average end users of web browser software applications opting for the Firefox web browsing software application did not make sense to many people. The primary reason why people thought so was the fact that Mozilla Firefox is an open source web browsing software application. Since the biggest advantage offered by an open source web browsing software application or any open source software application for that matter is the fact that it can be customized very easily, most people were of the opinion that only those persons who possessed the technical requirements to modify the source code of the software application would opt for and use Mozilla Firefox.
