My May contributions for the brokerage account totaled $386.22 which is less than what I was expecting. I am going to close some dead bank accounts that I have floating around including one at Christian Community Credit Union. Immigrants' contributions to economy examined
A multiracial bus queue in Slough, Berkshire.Guardian photograph by Karen Robinson Here's an article from The Guardian that indirectly takes to task a recently released report, which claimed that immigrants in the United Kingdom contribute little or nothing to the country's economy. It's a highly dubious claim since immigrants, contrary to the general perception, pay taxes and spend their money just like everyone else and keep businesses thriving and the economy chugging along. David Rose's report on the town of Slough reminds me of a small town in New Jersey that passed an ordinance banning landlords from renting apartments and houses to undocumented immigrants. The result was that immigrants left the town in droves and many small businesses were shuttered because they no longer had c

Breaking News: RESP Contributions To Become Tax Deductible?
Thanks to reader Nicolas for providing a gentle nudge to write a post on a private members' bill that was passed last night that would allow Canadians to deduct contributions to RESP plans (Registered Education Savings Plans). The bill (which is not final), proposes that contributions up to $5,000 per year (and up to a lifetime maximum of $50,000) be deductible from the contributor's income.I have not found anything that indicates whether the CESG (Canadian Education Savings Grant) would still be awarded but my guess is that since there is stiff opposition to this bill (from the Conservative Party), the grant would be eliminated. Fingers crossed for both though! :)For an Ontarian in the highest tax bracket, an annual $5,000 contribution to an RESP would yield  $2,320.50 in tax sa

Greening Your Year End Charitable Contributions
Another year almost over. 2007. Gone. Pretty soon, the dreaded tax season will be upon us. Now is a great time to consider offsetting your tax burden by making charitable donations. If you do already, consider rearranging your allocations towards the environment. Here at IDOG, we know its a worthy cause! There are many wonderful green charities that can help us fight climate change and the challenges that face us as a result of it. Here are a few that I found worth mentioning:Carbonfund.org. Their motto is "Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can't." This organization, along with their partners, offers individuals and businesses alike the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing "offsets." By doing this (which is considered a tax deductible contribution of course), your

Many Employers will MATCH your Charitable Contributions - all you have to do is apply...
If you happen to work for a very large company, chances are they have a program where they will match employee contributions to charitable donations dollar for dollar. So in other words you could double the amount of money going to your favourite charities! It's one of those things where when you hear about it you think, "Hey, that's a great idea!" but then it gets filed away and forgotten. More often than not, when a company newsletter comes around reminding you of the program you think about the $20 or $50 you've given to charity and how you forgot to take advantage of the free-matching! You probably say to yourself, "I'll remember for next time!" and then next time comes, and you forget again? I certainly fall into that boat.So here's my suggestion: Send an email to your HR person to ask two things. 1) Is there a charitable donation employer-matching program available? (if you don't know) 2) Ask if you can get 2 copies of the form. Even if you don't

The Firefox extension feature has made huge contributions to the popularity of the Firefox web browser
There was a time when people thought that the Firefox web browsing software application would not become a very popular web browser despite being very easy to use and despite being a lot better than other web browsing software applications due to the fact that its usage would be restricted to computer programmers only. The idea of average end users of web browser software applications opting for the Firefox web browsing software application did not make sense to many people. The primary reason why people thought so was the fact that Mozilla Firefox is an open source web browsing software application. Since the biggest advantage offered by an open source web browsing software application or any open source software application for that matter is the fact that it can be customized very easily, most people were of the opinion that only those persons who possessed the technical requirements to modify the source code of the software application would opt for and use Mozilla Firefox.
