According to current statistics, one person is estimated to die in a vehicle crash every 12 seconds in the United States. Statistics also show that automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans age 35 and under, and 98% of reported accidents involve a single, distracted driver. In most cases, that distraction is his/her cell phone. Other distractions include rubbernecking (watch

I think it was a little while ago when I first highlighted the plight of Maasai Lions in the Amboseli region of Southern Kenya. You can read that post to get the background on this issue here. Basically what is going on is that lions are disappearing at an alarming rate in that part of Africa owing to conflicts with humans. At this critical juncture National Geographic has stepped in to save the b

Here’s another theory to prove that consuming excess of anything, even if it is the healthier option such as fruits, could leave a negative impact on the body.
A study has confirmed that fructose, the natural sugar found in fruits, can also contribute to obesity. Most fruits contain high sugar content, and munching them all day, [...]

I have friends who are very open about their feelings. They are able to communicate the good and the bad very easily and openly. I on the other hand have always leaned toward not expressing them. This is hard for me to do as a friend, and was even a manager. For some reason having to look one of the employees in the eyes and tell them what a great worker they were was really hard for me. Easier to understand why it was hard to tell them they were slacking or needed to do better, but it’s a little strange that even positive feedback is hard to express. I think it’s all wrapped around what they will think of me for saying that, or it is just embarrassing for some reason. I think growing up that was just how it was in my family. Positive feelings or problems weren’t openly discussed or

Q. I get a lot of gas and someone told me it would help if I stopped chewing gum all the time (ex-smoker). That sounds like bunk to me. What do you think?A. It’s not bunk. When you chew gum, you swallow more often and some of what you're swallowing is air. In addition, artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol that is found in some gums can give you gas. But, what exactly, is gas? Most people produce between a pint and a half-gallon of gas each day. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen from swallowed air make up a large part of gas or “flatus.” Fermenting foods in the colon produce hydrogen and methane as well as carbon dioxide and oxygen. The unpleasant odor of some flatus is the result of trace gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, indole, and skatole, which are produced when foods decompose

Socially successful children tend to have fewer symptoms of anxiety or depression, while children with problems such as anxiety and depression tend to have difficulties forming relationships and being accepted by friends. However, it is difficult to determine whether the anxiety and depression lead to the social problems, or vice versa. New research suggests that social problems are more likely to contribute to anxiety and depression than the reverse. The research also shows that this is particularly likely during the transition from adolescence into young adulthood. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont and the University of Minnesota, appears in the journal Child Development. Using data from Project Competence, which has followed a group of 205 individuals from

Surprising research suggests a popular artificial sweetener has the unexpected and unwelcome effect of packing on the pounds.Purdue researchers report that saccharin altered the ability of rats to control their appetites. However, the head of an artificial sweetener trade group scoffed at the findings, saying they don't necessarily translate to humans."We found that the rats that were getting artificially sweetened yogurt gained more weight and ate more food," said study author Susan Swithers, an associate professor of psychological sciences at the Ingestive Behavior Research Institute at Purdue University. "The take-home message is that consumption of artificially sweetened products may interfere with an automatic process."That process, she said, involves the body's ability to detect that

The web contains an enormous amount of information, and Google has helped to make that information more easily accessible by providing pretty good search facilities. But not everything is written nor is everything well organized to make it easily discoverable. There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it. We believe that many do not share that knowledge today simply because it is not easy enough to do that. The challenge posed to us by Larry, Sergey and Eric was to find a way to help people share their knowledge. This is our main goal.Earlier this week, we started inviting a selected group of people to try a new, free tool that we are calling "knol", which stands for a unit of knowledge. Ou

Scientists today reported new evidence that infection with a common virus may be a contributing factor to the obesity epidemic sweeping through the United States and other countries. In laboratory experiments they showed that infection with human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36), long recognized as a cause of respiratory and eye infections in humans, transforms adult stem cells obtained from fat tissue into fat cells. Stem cells not exposed to the virus, in contrast, were unchanged.

Earlier this week, the Bush Administration spoke in favor of tougher economic sanctions for Sudan as a strategy for halting the genocide in Darfur. Skeptics of the proposal argue the economic sanctions will be ineffective without a.) UN Security Council support b.) support from the Chinese (who do big business with Sudan) or c.) because we are dependent upon Sudan’s oil exports. Yet again, it appears as if economic threats will fail in the face of business interests, lack of support from the International Community and an unnerving dependency on oil. Big business trumps diplomacy; oil trumps big business.

But, in an act of defiance, responding to the President’s threats, the Sudanese ambassador to the United States raised the stakes a bit higher: He threatened to cut off America’s supply of Coca-Cola. Holding a bottle of the brown bubbly beverage in the air and calling the Sudanese “agents of peace”

Whether you agree that human activity on earth is polluting the atmosphere and triggering a warming of the globe, the facts are in - cattle rearing contributes more to global atmospheric, water and land pollution than automobiles. After first publishing this news last week, thousands of people have read this article on the Internet and dozens have written to me asking that I offer more evidence of the claim.I appreciate the feedback, and so I have collected some more facts about cattle pollution from a number of sources on the web.- Global meat production is projected to more than double from 229 million tons in 1999/2001 to 465 million tons in 2050, while milk output is set to climb from 580 to 1043 million tons. [source: United Nations report, Dec., 2006]- When emissions from land use (such as production of feedcrops and grazing land) and land use change are included, the livestock sector accounts for 9% of CO2 deriving from human-related activities, but produces a much larger share o
I read an article today asking why UK citizens are not happier as we are experiencing record levels of prosperity, low levels of crime, less poverty and better prospects in health, education, technology and employments than ever before. Apparently in 1957 52% of the population claimed to be very happy, this has now fallen to 36%. Why are we in this contradictory state?
It seems to be that you have to fight the stronger human instinct of negativity, you have to try to choose to be happy. I can only speak from personal experience but travel has brough a lot of happiness to my life. I met my husband when I was on holiday. I have enjoyed travel over the years in different ways. It was great fun going on holiday with our sons when they were young. I’ve had some interesting trips relating to my business Europe a la Carte.
I think it depends on what travel means to you. If you focus on travel as an escape from your everyday humdrum life, then you may feel more depressed when you r
As the farm economies of many states evolve, land owners are taking property once used for everything from dairy farming to tobacco growing and turning it into vineyards. Illinois is one state that does not instantly spring to mind when you think wine. However, a just released report from the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association indicates that could change in the coming years.
According to the report, nearly 2,300 people now work in vineyard and winery business in the state. The industry has more than a $250 million economic impact on the state. The growth has picked up steam during the last decade with 68 new wineries coming on line.
While distribution of Illinois wine is expanding in restaurants and retail stores, most is sold at the wineries to visitors. Wineries are good corporate citizens, paying $11.9 million in taxes to the State of Illinois.

In the South Bronx, school kids have unusually high rates of asthma. Thanks to a five-year study, we now know it's because diesel trucks spew a lot of soot into the air. The study found that kids had worse asthma on high-traffic days, which is bad news for kids who live in one of the busiest area of New York City. Around 12,000 trucks a day drive through Hunts Point Market alone, the study's authors want us to know. One of the study's principal researchers, George Thurston, Sc.D., who is associate professor of environmental medicine at NYU School of Medicine, said, "we went in and actually measured personal exposures to traffic pollution, which had not been done before. Our results confirm that diesel soot particles in air pollution are causing exacerbations of asthma in children."So, New York, what are you going to do with this information? There are lots of clean diesel options out there. There's no excuse not to use them, and ULSD is just the beginning. [Source: New

The amount of car accident compensation claims made in the UK has undoubtedly risen since the number of roadside distractions became more commonplace. In fact, a survey carried out by Privilege Insurance in 2005 found that a total of 83% of UK motorists are affected by roadside distractions when driving. Whether you spy someone streaking alongside a motorway, catch a glimpse of a busty lady on a large poster or slow your car and crane your neck to see the aftermath of smash, roadside distractions certainly put drivers and their passengers at serious risk of sustaining car crash injuries as a result of just a few seconds of lapsed concentration. Alluring ads and scintillating statues Although the temptation to take your eyes off the road ahead and take a sidewards glance at an attractive member of the opposite gender has always been there, suggestions have been made that modern advertising could be one of the most potentially serious road accident hazards around. There has been much spe

Did Jailers Contribute to Sean Levert's Death?
Apr 1st 2008
TMZ has learned that singer Sean Levert was physically restrained by jail guards right before he died.
Staff at the Cuyahoga County Jail tell us Levert was "out of control" and "hallucinating," forcing them to place him in a restraining chair, because he was a danger to himself. The jail's warden Kevin McDonough says Levert was cooperative and "went willingly" when jail staff bound his wrists and shackled his feet.
The Cuyahoga County Coroner tells us Levert's body showed no signs of physical trauma, nor do they suspect foul play. They are currently awaiting toxicology results -- those will take four to six weeks to come back.
Sean reportedly suffered from high blood pressure. In a statement issued
