In a recent article on Yahoo Games I read about how certain components in Sony's PS2/3 and other electronics devices directly led to a rare metal becoming scarce and driving third world dictatorships, like the Congo, to use Slave and child labor to mine the material.I had never heard of the metal before, but apparently when the PS2 was really in demand Sony was having a hard time getting enough of

An 18-month BBC investigation for Panorama has found evidence that:- Pakistani peacekeepers in the eastern town of Mongbwalu were involved in the illegal trade in gold with the FNI militia (described by Human Rights Watch as "some of the most murderous individuals that operate in eastern Congo"), providing them with weapons to guard the perimeter of the mines.- The Indians traded gold, bought drugs from the militias and flew a UN helicopter into the Virunga National Park, where they exchanged ammunition for ivory.A UN investigation concluded that one officer had been responsible for dealing in gold - allowing traders to use UN aircraft to fly into the town, putting them up at the UN base and taking them around the town. But the UN decided that "in the absence of corroborative evidence" its
The BBC Panorama program came out yesterday with news that UN peacekeepers in the DR Congo provided arms to militia groups and smuggled gold and ivory.
The 18-month investigation found that:
Pakistani peacekeepers in the eastern town of Mongbwalu were involved in the illegal trade in gold with the FNI militia, providing them with weapons to guard the perimeter of the mines
Indian peacekeepers operating around the town of Goma had direct dealings with the militia responsible for the Rwandan genocide, now living in eastern DR Congo.
The Indians traded gold, bought drugs from the militias and flew a UN helicopter into the Virunga National Park, where they exchanged ammunition for ivory
However, Alan Doss, Special Representative to the Secretary-General of the UN, defends the credibility of

It is often referred to as Africa’s “forgotten war.” Over three and half million Congolese have died in the past decade, the largest loss of civilian life since WWII.
Since 1998, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been mired in sporadic civil and regional war. The conflict has seen seven neighboring countries involved in cross-border fighting, exacerbating internal political divisions and long-standing tribal wars.
The DRC’s natural wealth — of diamonds, gold, and more — combined with its human poverty has perpetuated the violence; assisted by the far-reaching influences of foreign money, multinational corporations, and the global proliferation of small arms.
But since 2003 the DRC has experienced a fragile peace, even witnessing a historic round of national elections. Now aid agencies warn that the country is once again on the brink of civil war, thanks to a violent renegade general who claims he is the true protector of peace.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is set to offer Congo striker Tresor Mputu a 10 day trial with the North London giants. The 21 year-old forward currently plays for TP Mazembe in the Congo, but with interest from teams across Europe, it seems like he will be leaving Africa soon.Salomon Idi Kalonda, director of Mputu's current club, has gone public on the trial."We've received an invitation from Arsenal for Mputu," he told News of the World."Talks began a long time ago but we didn't want to say anything before an agreement was reached."We ruled out a number of clubs before choosing Arsenal."The fact that Mputu chose to trial at Arsenal comes as a great success for the club, especially considering the promise that the youngster shows.Former Cameroon coach Claude le Roy, a man famous for his 'discovery' of Samuel Eto'o, has stated that Tresor Mputu is better than the Cameroonian Barcelona legend. The reported price of £500,000 could become the crown diamond in Arsene Wenger's already imp

Web: Forgotten WarIdioma: Ingles
Educating children is promoting the success of the society. And we know that GOD in Schools is still the main foundation of our Society.
Introduction
The situation in Bukavu has been quite moving in the last ten years. Years of war and Political Crisis have adversely affected the Educational System and the nation’s literacy rate. School remains one of the efficient means to bring back hope to young people and teach them social values.
The Mission
This project was initiated by Nabintu Mujambere from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a graduate of the Pedagogical School of Mons, Belgium.
Our Mission is to develope infrastructure for the school system, beginning with Mushere Christian School in Bukavu. Our aim is to reform and modernize the current curriculum to meet the educational needs of Congolese Students of the twenty-first century.
All these activities proposed are oriented to the contribution we can bring in the development of the town of Bukavu and to the Congo throu

Colonialism may have ended in the middle of the 19th century, but foreign powers still exert a great influence over the African continent. Although the methods of intervention are different, the motives have remained unchanged. Instead of colonial governments, the major players are vast multinational corporations that seek to tap Africa's abundant natural resources. On such an expansive subject as resource exploitation, an all-inclusive depiction of the present situation is a highly ambitious endeavor. Africa is a vast continent with numerous states and tremendous biodiversity, and the numerous differences serve only to make the existing picture even more amorphous. For this reason I will focus upon the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a nation with enormous levels of unrealized potential.Known as Zaire from 1971-1997, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was formerly a Belgian-administered colony. A wave of nationalist sentiments in the 1950's led to the first parliamentary election

In Tintin in the Congo, one of his earliest adventures, our intrepid reporter hunts down both criminals and wild game. The story was written in 1930 and first appeared in book form in 1931, and some of the parts are so dated that for years the book was unavailable in English. This edition reprints on black-and-white newsprint the original 1931 version. In one scene, Tintin tells a group of

Don't ask me why these guys are called Congo Squares, it's a recipe my mother made while I was growing up and was never questioned. Why are cookies called cookies?I have made batches with butterscotch chips in place of chocolate and found the results to be highly satisfying.Oh, and they're best eaten fresh from the oven--but of course you knew that.2 ¾ c flour2 ½ t baking powder½ t salt2 ¼ brown sugar2/3 c shortening3 eggs2 t vanilla1 package chocolate chipsMix the flour, baking powder, salt and brown sugar in a large bowl. In a small pan on the stove or in a glass bowl in the microwave, carefully melt the shortening and add it to the dry ingredients. Stir the mix well and let it cool slightly. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla then add chocolate chips. Spread the batter in a lightly greased 9x13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.***Today is the last day to enter the Write-Away Contest, the winner will be posted on
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a place that I rarely heard about in my daily life. It is for sure that I have never ever set a foot onto such a faraway place ever. Usually when you think about a faraway place, you often think such a place might be exotic, amazing, strange, and wonderful. Unfortunately, DRC is a place that you might stay away for good reasons, and to think of such a place, a normal human being might feel a heavy heart.
DRC is in the midst of the civil war. The civil war has been waging for 10 years long. What a terrible civil war! Four million people were killed, and more than 250,000 women were raped. Just about 30% of the women who got raped were infected with HIV/AIDS. Men in DRC treated women poorly, and as if they
