      Commentary: AB sold to InBev
NOTE: As a St. Louis native, I was asked to comment on the sale of local St. Louis brewer Anheuser-Busch to European beverage conglomerate InBev. The following are my comments from the thread. A couple of things here, AB has been a big STL employer for years sure, but just because they’re big doesn’t mean [...]

      Market Commentary 6/30/08
Good news and (mostly) bad….     Last week’s drop in the US and Overseas market came just at the time when markets seemed to be looking up. Oil, after peaking at 140/ barrel seemed to have topped out and traded in the 135/barrel region. At the same time the dollar had firmed against the Euro.   I have been [...]

      Debunkifying Clark Commentary
      1. Clark, like Lee Harvey Oswald, acted alone. Conspiracy theorists (and the GOP) may want Obama to have given the green light to this, but he's repeatedly rejected the statement. And Wes probably cost himself a place on the short list with this.2. Clark didn't attack McCain's war service; he attacked its relevance to being President. No one disputes that John McCain is an American hero who l

Comic Book Commentary: Secret Invasion Versus Final Crisis
All right, the numbers are finally in concerning Secret Invasion #2 and Final Crisis #1. Now, I never use sales numbers as a basis for the quality of a comic book. Michelle Obama speech. Hitchens commentary
Michelle Obama is the same kind of polarizing figure Hillary Clinton was, but without the political savvy. Besides her obnoxious "Elect Obama so we won't suck" attitude, she reminds me of the, yes, sometimes "bitter" workers at the DMV. And, you know how guys joke about their subservience to their wife ("Yeah, I have to check with the boss." You can see it clearly on TV commercials- A wife allows her husband to have the big screen TV after hiding it somewhere.)? Well, it's only funny if it isn't or couldn't be true; you don't hear women say, "I have to ask permission from my husband" or "He'll beat me up if I do that." Barack and Michelle joke around like that a lot, but I don't think it's funny because I suspect that Barack really is scared of Michelle. Heck, who wouldn't be? Anyways,

How to Research Antiques, a Commentary.
I just did an appraisal today of some Silver Flatware. I won't bore you with the details but suffice to say this person had a number in mind that was seen off Ebay. This number was so substantially inflated I had to laugh. I asked the customer: "Did the item actually sell for that amount?" The retort was "What?" "Did the item actually have bids and sell for that amount." Again, the normal answer "I don't know" I looked the set up that they saw and told them how it worked. If you've come across this article because you want to research the antique you have please keep this in mind: Ebay is an excellent tool for finding the current retail value of so many items out there. Still, I can safely say that I've haven't seen as many lies per minute since the question and answer portion of the Miss Chastity pageant. What's really surprising is that Obama actually lied more than accomplished fibber Hillary Clinton. Dumb, easy to debunk ones too like his lie about handguns. And, as mentioned on the corner, Obama would prefer to raise taxes than increase tax revenue. Gratuitous beauty pageant picture. This equality fetish reminds me of the question I always ask to illustrate the point: If you ask a liberal if he'd prefer that some people get 10% more of something while other

So, if Hillary were president, she would have avoided the housing crisis. Well, you were a senator, Mrs. Clinton: Why didn't you bring it up? As far as Iraq: Saying that they'd leave Iraq no matter what, is irresponsible, and moderate people will see it as a promise to the left wing. Tom Coburn saying abortionists should be punished in a court of law is the same as terrorism? They did better on taxes. At least, I can see this "raise taxes on everybody except you" game as effective. The moderators are being relatively tough. Real Names vs Internet Names: A running commentary
© Mrs. Flinger 2008. There’s this phenomenon on the Internet. It’s called Google. Most people/employers/possible clients know how to use Google. Google is good. Google is bad. Google may be Big Brother. Or, maybe, if we go all deep and philosophical, Google is really God. All knowing. All seeing. Telling your seventh grade boyfriend things you said about him and making your marriage an open book. Google is the bane of the medical world and the best friend of new moms with collicy babies. In short, we all turn to Google at night to answer our requests. Am I wrong? But with such knowledge at our fingertips (annoyingly so) it’s easy to “get caught” in the act. Or tarnish a reputation. Illinois: Commentary, Report
In this editorial, Eric Zorn of the Chicago Tribune discusses recent issues related to the pardon power in the State of Illinois. The piece suggests the "system" worked for Chandra Gill who attacked an off-duty police officer working security at a high school basketball. Gill applied for a pardon in August of 2006 and scored in January of 2007. Zorn provides several interesting details related to the pardon and considers the decision of Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) in the case to be "scandalous—yet another example of his brazen and capricious use of power." Among other things, Zorn also notes the Prisoner Review Board currently has a backlog of 1,571 applications. To date, Blagojevich has granted 67 pardons and denied 1,160 requests. For additional information on the Chandra Gill pardon, see:

I’m curious to find out about the expectations that the followers of The Revolution have for Secret Invasion. Personally, I think this event is a train wreck waiting to happen. The entire basis for Secret Invasion of who is a Skrull isn’t an actual story or plot. It is simply a plot device. And while I adored Bendis’ work on Daredevil and have loved his impressive run on Ultimate Spider-Man, the fact is that I have found his work on team titles and big events to be incredibly unimpressive. New Avengers has been a dreadful read and House of M was such a disappointment. Despite Bendis being a talented writer, I simply don’t think that his ta

The comic book industry was rocked by a historic ruling on March 26, 2008 from the Federal District Court in the Central District of California. The judge ruled that the Siegel heirs have copyright interests in the content of Action Comics #1. The award was only limited to Action Comics #1 because that was all the work that Shuster and Siegel performed for DC before signing the contract that assigned all their rights to Superman over to DC.This is a huge decision, but the battle is far from over. I am sure that Time Warner is going to appeal this decision. So it will be some time before we get a final ruling on this matter. This ruling involves some highly complex Copyright laws. Here for text. It's easy to judge Obama's speeches, but it's hard to assess their impact. On the one hand, they're all about dressing up socialist wolves in moderate, practical clothing and the elevation of selfishness (free _____) to magnanimity. But, nobody would use disguises if they never worked. The speech ambiguously condemns Wright while apologizing for him and making anybody who brings it up feel "divisive," the worst thing you can be in an Obama world-except when he himself is talking about corporations or "special interests." It talks about his background which I find neither heroic nor interesting (I don't denigrate it, either- I just don't care more about his accomplishments than his circumstances.) and offers some middling America-loving talk, inaccurate history (No char

      Comic Book Commentary: Justice League
Newsarama posted a little article about the new Justice League title by James Robinson that was announced over the weekend at Wizard World: Los Angeles. It appears that we are getting a more aggressive strike force styled version of the JLA. Robinson’s philosophy is that since the word “justice” is in the JLA’s name that they should be in the business of bringing criminals to justice rather than sitting around and being attacked or stopping a crime in progress.Evidently, a character gets killed during Final Crisis and Hal Jordan is pissed off and wants the JLA to go exact some justice against the murdering villain. The JLA wants to take a more cautious route and that causes a schism. So, this all leads Hal Jordan to team up with his old compatriot Green Arrow and they go on to form

      A Funny Commentary on Fakers
Thanks to Kate over at FishBowlLA for sending this to me.The Phoenix: Pants afireYes, if you’re impatient with the facts, if you feel they require enhancement, colorization, or “jazzing up,” now’s your moment. If you’re Tom Ashbrook, on the other hand, the times are vexed. “A program note,” announced the host of WBUR’s On Point on Tuesday, March 4, sounding unwontedly small-voiced and glum. “In our second hour on Friday, you may recall we talked with an author. Thought her name was [slight spin of sarcasm] Margaret B. Jones. Her new memoir was Love and Consequences, it was about life in South Central Los Angeles, growing up half-white, half–Native American, uh, running with gangs there, selling drugs for the Bloods . . .” A sigh. “Well, it comes out today the whole

Market Likely To Open Higher On Positive Global Cues - Indian Commentary
2/26/2008 11:03:57 PM Global cues are pointing towards a higher opening for the Indian market on Wednesday. However, the volatility is likely to be high in view of the expiry of February futures contracts on Thursday. Additionally, the Finance Minister will present the Budget for 2008-2009 on Friday. The U.S. stocks extended their gains for a third day on Tuesday after IBM announced a share buyback plan. The major markets across the Asia-Pacific region are trading higher on Wednesday, tracking the positive lead from Wall Street. However, the U.S. recession fears continue to persist as revealed by two economic reports. "The Copper Dredil" and Commentary
Father John Trigilio recently sent us a post from his blog, The Black Biretta, "What Hollywood Will NEVER Produce." The post is a parody outlining a movie called The Copper Dredil, which insults Islam and Judaism in much the fashion The Golden Compass insults Christianity. I found Fr. Trigilio's story interesting at first, but it broke down toward the end when it became too transparently allegorical. I suppose that's appropriate, considering what it's parodying. When Deej showed me this, I snatched it from him and said I'd like to make a comment. Normally, I only bother to show up for the blog when I've read a manga or watched an anime I feel like talking about, but this rather piqued my interest. Fr. Trigilio's complaint is that Hollywood (which probably doesn't deserve to be identified as a single-minded conglomerate) is willing to insult Christianity in a way it isn't willing to insult other religions. This is to be expected. When I read manga, I sometimes see a similar irreve

Sad Commentary on Society, or Just Sad?
My insanely controversial last post aside, readers of my site (”SKOS” as the kids like to call it) know that good, clean, dry humor is my calling card. Unless you are Amish, in which case I’m telling on you because you shouldn’t be on the Internet, nothing I have ever written is likely to have offended you. And that’s because my writing reflects my personality. “A nice guy you can take home to mom and dad” isn’t just a tattoo I have written on my forehead, it’s who I am. I write all that to intro a local radio commercial I have heard three times in the past week. It’s a commercial unlike any I have ever seen or heard before. My writing about it could (potentially) offend some of you, so tread lightly. (more…)

Interesting commentary on the top one percent
November 27, 2007 That ‘Top One Percent’ By Thomas Sowell People who are in the top one percent in income receive far more than one percent of the attention in the media. Even aside from miscellaneous celebrity bimbos, the top one percent attract all sorts of hand-wringing and finger-pointing. A recent column by Anna Quindlen in Newsweek (or is that Newsweak?) laments that “the share of the nation’s income going to the top 1 percent is at its highest level since 1928.” Who are those top one percent? For those who would like to join them, the question is: How can you do that? The second question is easy to answer. Virtually anyone who owns a home in San Francisco, no matter how modest that person’s income may be, can join the top one percent instantly just by selling their house. But that’s only good for one year, you may say. What if they don’t have another house to sell next year? Well, they won’t be in the top one percent aga

Christian Reactions To My Bible Commentary
Just because I have received precisely the reaction I expected on my first and second bible commentary posts from Christian readers does not mean that I'm not still disappointed. Maybe it was merely a case of expecting the worst while hoping I'd be pleasantly surprised. What I am talking about is the accusation, no matter how subtle it may be phrased, that I'm attacking a straw man. Many Christians are fond of criticizing atheists for rejecting their religion because we do not fully understand it. When faced with an atheist who is actually reading their bible and still rejects it, the argument becomes one of interpreting things too literally. "You're missing the point. Christians don't read their bibles literally like you are doing." In other words, I am attacking a straw man by unfairly criticizing Christians for believing things they don't actually believe. As I have many times before, I will remind anyone tempted by this line of criticism that the majority of Americans do in fac
