Read the full article in The Capital Times and discover how, long after graduation, your alma mater can still teach you a thing or two about how to succeed in business.

      UF No. 3 among AOL's most-searched colleges
It seems lots of AOL users are curious about the University of Florida. (Photo from ufl.edu) The state's flagship public university ranked No. 3 of the top 10 most-searched universities on AOL, according to the company's annual list of AOL Search use. Ahead of UF were the University of Michigan and Boston College. And apparently students who research UF like what they find. UF, the largest state university in Florida and among the nation's biggest with 51,000-plus students,  got some 26,000 applications for just 6,600 fall 2008 freshman slots.

Colleges have different plans for higher spring tuition
All 11 state universities will charge in-state undergraduates 5 percent more come January, but they have very different plans for spending the additional revenue -- $9.5-million in all. UF will use its $1.5 million entirely on hiring new faculty and academic advisors, while FSU will use most of its $1.4-million to restore money that was cut this fall from "critical" areas like library operations. USF will use $1-million of its $1.4-million in additional revenue to restore course offerings cut this fall. More than $300,000 will go into need-based aid, and merit-based aid will increase by $106,000. UCF has similar plans, putting $1-million into course offerings and $550,000 into need-based aid. Click here for the full report, to be discussed next week when the Board of Governors meets on UCF's Orlando campus.

Finding Pet Friendly Colleges and Universities
Title: Finding Pet Friendly Colleges and UniversitiesAuthor: Darlene BerkelFinding Pet Friendly Colleges and UniversitiesIt may seem like a strange idea at first, but pet friendlycolleges and universities are on the increase. There arestill many student accommodations that do not allow pets, but if the thought of leaving your beloved pet at home formonths on end while you are at university is something youcannot accept, then you should be able to find a universityor college that offers the course you want, and will letyour pet stay with you.Just about every college has the policy of disapproving ofstudents keeping pets This is so for a number of reasons.Pets are usually considered to be smelly, noisy, andcapable of biting, or scratching. Another major concern isthat some students may be allergic. Also, there is thepossibility that once the novelty of having the pet hasworn off, and the students get busy with their academic (and social) activities, they may neglect or ab

St. Petersburg College received two of five awards to be presented by Community Colleges chancellor Will Holcombe during the upcoming 58th Annual Florida Association of Community Colleges Convention in Orlando. SPC won for its New Initiative Program, a federally funded program of academic support for pre-health and health education students. SPC also was recognized for its Workforce, Education and Business (WEB) program. “I applaud these institutions for their outstanding commitment to student achievement,” said Chancellor Holcombe. “These awards give much-needed recognition to the exceptional work being done by Florida’s community colleges. Are Entrepreneurial Colleges worth it?
As I scrolled through my morning dose of Digg Business, I noticed that there are a lot of articles on entrepreneurship. Specifically I was scrolling and saw this article first: 15 Successful Entrepreneurs who didn’t need college Followed 2 diggs down by: The Top 50 Entrepreneurial Colleges Huh? So the richest entrepreneurs in history didn’t go to/ finish college… but here’s a list of the best colleges that ‘teach’ entrepreneurship. Do they teach kids to dropout? The problem here is that ‘entrepreneur’ has become something of a buzz word. So now everyone wants to be one. That’s great, I would love nothing more than to see that, but the simple fact is I don’t know if you can ‘teach’ a lot of the personality traits that make up entrepreneur types to people. However I do believe that having a curriculum oriented towards those with the personality traits and desire to be entrepreneurs can be very useful. Example: I wa

Colleges Shifting From Twin Size Beds to Double Side Beds
Dorms in colleges are supposed to make life easier for students. However, this includes ensuring that the dormitories that they are staying in have adequate space to ensure that they are not too cramped up. Anyone would love to have a big bed for his own. But the thing is, the limitation of space may not allow it. There are other things to consider such as the study table and other usual dormitory furniture which on their own are supposed to be as compact as possible. There is no issue with wanting complete and general respite. The problem is dorms are only temporary shelters while teens are in college. After that they are out and perhaps will stay at home for the early duration of their career. She is fifty-nine and attended Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania. She arrived at Harvard six years ago as the founding dean of its Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She will replace Lawrence Summers who resigned last June after five years as president. The royal colleges are "politically naive, poor, and incapable of strategic thought" Says Richard Smith
Heart throb for the over 60s gives us his Harrison Ford PoutBefore Ms Fiona " I have family connections" Godlee, Richard Smith ran the British Medical Journal with an incredible amount of sassy style. Clad in his grubby leather jacket, Richard Smith kicked some ass in the medical profession. Since his departure and that of his colleague Kamran Abassi, we have been force-fed feminist issues by Godlee and her team. Doctors have continued to throw the BMJ in the bin and opted for the better Hospital Doctor. Anyway, Richard has appeared again to criticise everyone. He is though very right. He tells the profession to basically get its act together and stop squabbling between themselves. The article can be read here. "Dr Richard Smith called for wholesale reform of the bodies that represent doctors in the wake of the failures in doctor training systems. A report by Sir John Tooke in to Modernising Medical Careers and the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) found a string of failures

10 Online Colleges Offering Credit For Life Experience
Life experience degrees we have all heard of them. But do they really exist?Yes and no. Many reputable colleges and universities allow you to earn credit for life experience. They do not, however, allow you to earn your entire degree through life experience. Only diploma mills make those kinds of promises! How credit is awarded and assigned varies widely by university, but there is always a specific limit to the number of alternative credits you may earn toward your degree. Most of the colleges listed below offer a combination of credit by examination, military training credit, and portfolio credit. Most individuals interested in gaining credit for life experience use the portfolio credit method. Using this method, colleges and universities evaluate your life experience, professional training and certifications, and so on. For example, if you are a small business owner, you may be able to get management and accounting credit, depending on your institution. If you are a human resources ma

      Alcohol and colleges
So the long week ends! Not just for the fact that there were tons of homework assignments that needed to be done, but the pictures, facts, handouts, and who knows what, have stopped! Try going to lunch last week, and chances are you were attacked by some one warning the dangers of alcohol. There were pictures lined up to remind a person of all the reasons why they should not drink. A beautiful woman was… well she went through a lot and the picture showed it very clearly. There were plenty of guest speakers. I have already mentioned that I would like to thank Tina for speaking. The fact is, do not drink and drive. I warned my friends that they shouldn’t get in a car with some one drunk. Most of them don’t drink, or the ones that do can’t drive. Frankly, I don’t care of that person had a sip, don’t get in the car with them. See, I don’t drink. Period.  So I am always the one getting people home, one way or another. I’ve shoved people

High school relationship blossoms at different colleges
Tim Reid saw Ann McCullough and her friends looking at him from across the room, laughing. He thought their laughs were because they were making fun of him. Little did he know, McCullough only giggled because she was admiring him instead of paying attention in their high school freshman history class.“He used to sit across the room from me so I actually just thought he was really cute. He just always smiled and never talked,” McCullough said. Despite his notion that he was being made fun of, Reid thought McCullough was attractive and tried to get the courage to meet up with her after class. “I was nervous talking to her,” he said. McCullough’s friend since fourth grade, Alli Matheis, a junior at Indiana University, remembers Reid being quiet and staring with McCullough at him across the room. A mutual friend kept the two connected over the summer, and after a few group hangouts and parties, on McCullough’s birthday of her sophomore year of high school, Reid asked her out.

      How to Find Colleges
Growing up, there were several colleges around the state that I knew of, and I was pretty familiar with the layout of the campuses, but I didn’t really want to go to any of them.  I learned how to find colleges, and found one that suited my needs and degree plan. It’s sad, but many college freshman will readily admit that the only reason they are attending the college they are is simply because when they were applying to different schools, they merely went with the ones they knew, or the ones that were close by. My favorite excuse is that a particular friend was going there, and so they have decided to base their future off of where there friend is going to college. Not smart. Once they start choosing a career, they may find that they will need to transfer schools, and not all of the classes taken will transfer over.  This is a costly mistake. New CHEd chief dared: Get rid of low-grade nursing colleges
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has urged the new chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), former Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri, to immediately close down substandard nursing schools, "in order to protect the hopes and dreams of hundreds of thousands of aspiring nurse practitioners and their families.""We are definitely counting on Mr. Neri to take decisive and resolute action against deficient nursing colleges that have opportunistically proliferated on account of the growing number of high school graduates wanting to take up the nursing course," TUCP president Democrito Mendoza said."Nursing institutions that collect sky-high tuition, yet fail to provide adequate instruction to students, are rotten. They are just as rotten as the preneed companies that take contributions, but fail to deliver on their promise to pay for the schooling of a planholder’s son or daughter," Mendoza said.Low-grade nursing schools "deserve to be closed down

Admission criteria of US colleges/ MS programs
Q: I have completed my BE in mechanical engineering this year. Now, I am preparing for GRE to get admission into one of the US' 100 best colleges. I want to know what GRE score I need to get into these colleges. I got a GPA of 3.9. Can u please help me to find out the requirements of these colleges?A typical US college looks at your academic, application, Statement of Purpose (SOP), GRE and TOEFL scores. Build on your strengths and cover your weaknesses. A good engineering score would definitely give you an edge. A good GRE score is around 1500+. Again, the better the application the better the chances of scholarships and assistantships. The most important thing is the SOP. Ensure that it captures everything, is well written and professionally formatted. If you can get someone to help, no harm. Someone who is familiar with US English and culture would be ideal to help you polish your SOP and create a good impact.
