People who visit this blog are aware of the problems I’ve had with smart. For months I tried to get broadband in my home but couldn’t as Smart had messed up a previous order and retained ownership of my line. Well throughout the course of that I never actually received a broadband service from Smart and yet they continue to bill me. I was talking to their representative Ann-Marie and she said she would sort it out. Well surprise surprise recently I have received a letter from debt collectors acting on behalf of Smart saying they will initiate legal action to get money from me for a service they didn't provide! I told the collector on the phone not to call me again unless it is with a summons where I will get an opportunity to lay out my grievances.

Yet the strong-armed tactics used by some collection agencies are drawing complaints. "I would get 4, 5, 7, 9 calls a day," said Mary Ann Orosz of a debt collection agency after receiving numerous phone calls intended for someone else. "Starting about four or five months ago, I started getting calls for Mark Wilson, Mike Wilson, even a Marquita Wilson," she said. Orosz's complaints are common and have resulted in federal regulations which debt collection agencies are required to follow. "There are some guidelines that are set up about the different times of day in which consumers can be contacted and what consumers can do if they believe that they do not owe the debt," said Erin Jones of the Better Business Bureau. Under the Fair Debt Collection Act, debt collectors can contact you in person, by mail, telephone - even fax. But they can't do so before 8 a.m.

That means he has to PROVE that you actually owe the debt by supplying copies of contracts, receipts, bills, and/or any records that pertain to how the debt was created and calculated. In many cases I have counseled, this will usually stop everything immediately, and you may even get a letter affirming you do not owe a debt.Where many people make their mistake is asking the collector to "verify" the debt. Final Fantasy VII was one of the first Final Fantasy games I ever got into. There was something about that game that hooked me right from the start. I know a lot of people that say the same thing. When I heard that Final Fantasy VII was getting turned into a movie I was truly excited.
