It’s been awhile since I had a bird post. Two ladies from my bird club sent me these and they are too cute not to pass on. Both birds are Grey-cheeked parakeets, very hard to find. These two retire for the night inside their coconut huts, dreaming of ocean breezes and swaying palm trees.

First, some context: Lies, damn lies and 150 coconut deaths Number-crunching has always had the potential to bamboozle, and today, more than ever, is the age of the fraction, the percentage and the average (but is that a mean or a median?). It's not just the newspapers, either. Numbers crop up in adverts, health warnings and speeches made by politicians, too. But do the figures add up? And do we trust them? Not really, according to, yes, another set of stats that dropped into the Independent's inbox last month. A survey in Britain by the Office for National Statistics found that only 36 per cent of people asked thought that official figures were "generally accurate". Meanwhile, a 2007 poll of trust in government statistics by the European Commission ranked Britain
Have you heard this one? Finally, mankind has the answer to that eternal question, how many coconuts does it take to go from London to Amsterdam? The answer: 150,000 -- converted into biofuel and poured into a special 747, of course. Virgin Atlantic completed its first biofuel tests yesterday with solid results, using a mix of 20 percent coconut oil and 80 percent jet fuel to power a 747 -- a first for the airline industry. There's still a long way to go, of course -- only one of the jet's four tanks carried the alternative fuel, and even Richard Branson admits that giant coconut plantations devoted to airline fuel probably aren't workable -- but despite harsh criticism from skeptics, it's still an impressive achievement. Branson says that although this test didn't use a viable fuel, it's a

Baby coconutsWe are excited! In another 6-9 months, we may have some cocos (coconuts). We planted two coconut palms about 3 years ago. Before that they lived in a couple of 5 gallon buckets for more than a year. The one palm is doing very well and has two fruiting branches. Both plants are supposed to be dwarf coconut palms. That is a good thing as I wouldn't relish the idea of climbing to the top of a palm tree to knock the coconuts out.The other palm has had a problem forever with a black sooty mold. It's also infested with fire ants which makes it very painful to trim or try to spray it. As you can see from this photo, the fruiting branch shriveled up and died. :(I need to learn more about coconuts. Supposedly we have one each of green and yellow coconuts. I thought all coconuts were brown − that is the way they looked in the grocery store. What do I know about cocos?!I love the way it looks like the bottom of the palm is wrapped in burlap. It looks so much like fabric and it is
While every one is working on their poems for Sunday, I traveled to Miami for a couple of days and had a fleeting moment to study the coconut trees in these three little sketches. This my seem like a "daa" to many readers who live among the tropical trees, but for a guy who lives among the Spruces, it was an "a-ha" moment. Coconut trees have leaves that spread leaflets from the stem, while palm trees have a fan shaped leaf with a long narrow stem that then opens like fingers mid-way up. Anyway hope you like the studies.
