Some were negative, “I [...]

Cat portrait, jigsaws and PO closures
Garden Cats © Tracy Hall 2008 The large portrait of six cats in a garden that I have been working on is just about finished. A few little things to adjust here and there and hopefully it will be ready to go to it's new home soon. I have also started work on the new paintings for a jigsaw company. I'm no expert on jigsaws, despite having painted quite a few now, but these are quite hard to do.

Several said while jobs of the roughly 200 employees at Chili's weren't lucrative positions, they enjoyed their work, felt a sense of belonging in the restaurants and worried they'd mis

      bridge closure = store closures?
Here’s some local news. As a result of the Agate Pass bridge closures this month, Rite Aid, one of two drugstores on BI, is closing an hour early, at 9pm, on those nights for the month of March to allow their employees to get home across the bridge (and the other drugstore is probably closed then, too). So, bridge closes, Rite Aid loses sales, employees lose paycheck (hopefully not insurance bene’s), and islanders hope Safeway has all their evening drug needs (unless they close early TOO). Nice. I hope everyone plans their medical emergencies accordingly. It’s weird to live on an island sometimes. Some of us wanted to live on an island (with a bridge), not BE an island….. And I wonder if other businesses are effected similarly. Anyone know? [This post can also be found on my online newspaper blog, Bainbridge Breezes.]

Is the BBC bucking the trend with its Nursery closures?
In light of the recent news that the BBC will be saving more than £4 million by the closure of its workplace nurseries this article looks at if this fate is likely to hit more nurseries or if the BBC is bucking the trend.Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the BBC’s decision to spend the £4.1 million saved from nursery closures on programming or not, the closure of 7 subsidised nurseries would at first glance appear to be against the norm.In fact closing of nurseries would appear to be the complete opposite of what is actually required if figures available from the likes of the Department of Education (DfES) are to be believed. Figures such as:1. The proportion of 3 and 4 year olds in nurseries and pre school education in the UK has risen by nearly 45% since 1970 (in 1970-71 it was 21% compared to 65% in 2003/04)2. The number of nurseries in the UK continues to rise with now close to 15,000 nurseries3. There are nearly 1.5 million child care places in the UK with an av
