Global Warming: Blame the 1990 Clean Air Act!
by J. Christoph Amberger Baltimore — (TFN): According to the European mainstream and the UN, global warming is caused by evil Americans driving SUVs to the malls. The sole salvation of the world lies in establishing a barter system of carbon dioxide indulgences… and sorting household trash all the way to Tuesday. But over the past few [...]

Opps... Clean air a cause of global warming?
Big surprise: "Our Findings Contradict the IPCC"   Europe is heating up much faster than climate researchers expected, and now they think they know why: air made dramatically cleaner by anti-pollution programs. With less particle pollution clouding the air, more sunlight is coming through and the continent is getting warmer. The 1970s were a hazy time: Cars ran on sulfur-rich gasoline, power plants and heavy industry burned sulfur-rich coal. Europe lay under a blanket of fumes filled with sulphate particles. Acid rain brought the particles back to earth, ravaging the continent's forests.  That was then. The situation today is considerably different. Auto emissions are low in sulfur, power plants only run with smoke filters and acid rain is no longer an issue. But the suc

Global Warming: The latest culprit — clean air!

The sole salvation of the world lies in establishing a barter system of carbon dioxide indulgences… and sorting household trash all the way to Tuesday. But a recent study is pointing at other culprits: Birkenstock-wearing European greens and environmentalists with [...]

Give the gift of clean air
I was at the Arizona Diamondbacks 2008 home opener last night and they scored 9 runs and beat the Dodgers 9-3.  Probably doesn’t mean much to most of you but what is significant is that it means that 90 trees will be planted as part of a program this year between the Diamondbacks and The Salt [...]

Protect Against Airborne Germs with Your Personal Aircraft Clean Air Filter
You either love plane travel or you hate it but, what cannot be denied is that there’s nothing worse than sitting next to another passenger who spends the entire flight coughing and spluttering germs into the air resulting in you suffering the inevitable streaming cold a couple of days into your holiday – but help is at hand in the form of this handy and somewhat novel travel gadget known as the Plane Clean Air Filter. The Plane Clean Air Filter works by simply attaching to the aircraft’s air nozzles above your seat which subsequently filters the air courtesy of its integral, FDA certified electrolytically charged filter – the result being what the product site terms as a ‘clean air curtain’ surrounding your head. Boasting filter effectiveness of up to 99.5% (the key words being ‘up to’) the Plane Clean Air Filter acts to remove bacteria, viruses and allergens from your very own personal air stream which, as can be seen by the aircraft safety card diagram inspired imag

Americans, take a deep breath of clean air. This one time, we did not make the top 10
Yes the list is out. While the factories remained fully operational, 70-120,000 tons of harmful emissions were released into the air annually. With the emphasis placed on maximum, low-cost production at the expense of environmental and occupational health and safety, industry has left the city heavily contaminated. Three violators of Clean Air Act pay $170,000 for illegal asbestos removal in California
The EPA has settled claims with three defendants to pay fines totaling $170,000 for violating Clean Air Act regulations during the removal of asbestos from buildings in Hayward, California in 2000. Over 31,000 square feet of asbestos-containing materials, including acoustic ceiling, tiles, linoleum, insulation, fire-proofing, and stucco where removed from the former Hayward Chiropractic College and dumped in open containers. The asbestos removal project was also the subject of a criminal investigation of the building owner, who under a plea agreement served four months under house arrest and paid a $5,000 criminal penalty. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and classified by the EPA as a hazardous air pollutant that poses a significant risk to human health, including cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. For the full article, go to yosemite.epa.gov.For more information about the EPA's regulation of asbestos, go to epa.gov/asbestos.

Tories Steamed Over Beefed Up Clean Air Act
Back in September the Conservative's released their much ballyhooed Clean Air Act. Meant to be the centre piece of their so called green plan, the proposed legislation was immediately panned by the media and opposition parties as a piece of industry friendly rhetoric that does nothing to combat global warming or improve air quality.Today, that bill was sent back to parliament, drastically rewritten by a special committee to include short-term, mid-term and long-term targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions; a commitment to a system of international emissions carbon trading; and penalties of $20 per ton for any company that exceeds their emissions target. Harper's rented mule has returned as a thoroughbred that will make substantial progress towards reducing greenhouse gases, holding industry accountable and addressing global warming. The Conservative response? Hint at elections and release a new set of attack ads.In a clear demonstration of their environmental leadership, next

Costly reminder of asbestos dangers: Salvation Army takes steps to abate asbestos and pays nearly $77,000 to EPA for Clean Air Act Violations
An Anchorage Salvation Army thrift store has agreed to pay a $76,906 penalty to settle with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for alleged violations of the asbestos National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (asbestos NESHAP) under the Clean Air Act.In response to customer complaints, EPA conducted an inspection of a thrift store operated by the Salvation Army in Anchorage in September 2005, and found untrained workers removing over 7,500 square feet of asbestos-containing floor tile during business hours. EPA’s inspector determined the floor tile was in a deteriorated state and easily crumbled with hand pressure. The store had already disposed of much of the broken floor tile prior to the inspection. Samples collected by EPA’s inspector showed the floor tile contained asbestos.Upon learning of the asbestos concern, the Salvation Army immediately closed the store, located on Northern Lights Boulevard, and kept it closed until an abatement company was abl

PM Gives Provinces $1.5 Billion For Clean Air
Prime Minister Harper announced a $1.5 billion dollar trust fund today to be distributed to the provinces and territories for the reduction of pollution and greenhouse gases.Details on where the money will be directed were sparse, except in the case of Quebec. That province has already implemented a carbon tax, pledged to meet Kyoto targets, and was seeking $328 million from Ottawa to help fund those plans. Harper announced that Quebec's share of the trust would be $350 million. How the individual provinces translate this money into action remains to be seen; however, we may get a first look tomorrow during the throne speech by BC Premier Gordon Campbell. Campbell is expected to announce a plan to reduce greenhouse emissions with set targets at that time.Their is speculation that the plan may mirror that implemented by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last year, which called for a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020. There is also speculation that Campbell may abando

Layton's Clean Air Act "amendments": taking it too far?
First of all he wants to re-name it the "Healthy Air and Climate Act", probably so he can take that into the next election as a piece of "successful NDP legislation" and woo environmental voters who seem to prefer the Greens right now. What I personally think is a little unrealistic is this:To set targets that Canada must meet, such as the Kyoto Protocol 2008 to 2012 targets, an 80 per cent reduction in emissions below 1990 levels, by 2050;First of all, I would like to see the NDP present a plan (including the cost, if possible) that would meet those targets in less than six years. Preferably one that keeps our economy intact. Second of all, the 80% long-term emissions cut is way more drastic than anything the Liberals have presented. We should wait until 2012 to see what other countries are planning to do before committing to something of that nature.

Canada: Clean Air Act an illusion: Suzuki
Canadian Press: The new federal Clean Air Act would do nothing to clean up the air or address climate change if it became law, which it won't, a David Suzuki Foundation campaigner said Friday. All opposition parties in the House of Commons have said they will vote against the bill, which means the chances of the minority Conservative government getting it passed are vanishingly small. "This is completely unnecessary legislation" said Morag Carter, director of the foundation's climate ... Link (Via Dr. Glen Barry)

Cons' plan for clean air: Warn you when it's bad
Canada’s New Conservative Government ™ emitted a clean air approach a couple days ago. On the gc.ca homepage, where we are greeted with sensible sky-blue margins, there’s the centerpiece of the Cons’ clean air pla…approach. It’s a warning system for days that are too smoggy to breathe. The plan is to tell Canadians that they are going to die, or can’t go outside. Brilliant, isn’t it? “We listened to Canadians. They told us they were concerned about worsening air quality and increasing emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Minister Ambrose. “After more than a decade of inaction on the environment by the previous government,” [we will strongly continue that fine Canadian tradition.] There’s some hope, but everything is talked about as if nothing will happen until 2010 at the earliest. The following quote is fine, if they’d just get more specific, and actually follow through next year. “It would amend

Minnesota Looks to Join California Clean Air Posse. For One Year.
Finance and Commerce reports that it was a close-run thing-- 20 to 18. But despite strenuous lobbying by Minnesota's ethanol industry,  the state's finance committee recommended adopting California's controversial car emissions standards. For one year. John Tuma, a lobbyist for the Minnesota Environmental Partnership, was a happy camper. Ish. "[For now,] consumers are going to be paying for vehicles that are not as fuel efficient as they could be so they will be paying more at the gas pump. And [there will be] more global warming pollution for a year. But it puts [standards] in place and that’s a step forward." [The bracket brigade in in da house!] Chris Radatz, director of public policy for the E85 FlexFuel-lovin' Minnesota Farm Bureau, is not so ha
