      The Clayboard is blowin’ UP.
So I’m sure you’ve all heard the breaking news by now. Clay Aiken is gay. Well, I heard on the radio this morning about the Clayboard, a message blog/forum for Clay Aiken fans. I was reading some of the posts, and they are completely mind boggling. To see the forum in action, click here. In case [...]

Elephant Familyscratchboard on clayboard, giclee available hereThese three elephants represent a family in the shelter of a giant abstract sunflower. I have a great respect for these magestic animals and they are such sensitive and deep creatures they seem to exude wisdom. We are still ignorant as to their forms of communication, but scientists discover they have a secret language. They have a very complex family structure and I wanted to show them in their daily lives walking along protected by a mystical flower overhead--just the way the spirit of my grandmother protects me as I walk along through life. This piece is a few years old but is only recently being offered as a giclee.

Sheep and Crowsscratchboard on clayboard, 11" x 1...
Sheep and Crowsscratchboard on clayboard, 11" x 14" giclee $60+s/h from artist Crows suddenly fly off as their are startled from their chore of gathering wool for their nests. Their wooly benefactors don't seem to care. I have seen this happen and had to record it in a drawing. I wanted the sky to reflect the energy felt by the sudden flight so I abstracted it a little. There is a book by Henry Moore of nothing more than his pencil sketches of sheep and how different they looked to him each day from outside his summer country studio in Britain. Even when they were sheared they were expressive. I remember he said something about being fascinated how such a simple animal could convey such a complex set of emotions with such a simple little body. I agree. This drawing is my contribution to the sheep of the world.see the big picture here

The Soap Factoryscratchboard on clayboard, giclee available, purchase from artist 14" x 11", $60This is an old art deco building in downdown Longview, WA. I was fascinated by the architecture of this 1920's art deco building --the bricks and the windows especially. Inside this elegant little shop are some very hep and lovely ladies who make their own hand made soaps, infusing products with an an array of herbal fragrances and intoxicating aromatic little wonderful, useless things. I thought it was an interesting dichotomy to see a motorcycle parked out front. Food for thought. hmmm......go here for the big picture

4H working lateScratchboard on clayboard 5" x 7"Inspired by my many trips to county fairs over several summers, these two are working late. This could have been titled "night before the big show". It's all about his attentiveness and the willing posture of the calf. Boys this age are very concerned about getting it right, and many excel. Animals are wonderful teachers too.

Horse in Trainingscratchboard on clayboard 7"x10"Training in long reins and getting a good start from a good trainer. This mare was really nice and I took a photo of her a while ago as my reference. For this scratchboard I used a lot of steel wool and a fiberglass brush to make soft modeling tones rather than using graphic lines to deliniate her form. Winsor & Newton inks were used for the color. Technorati tags: art, artwork, artist, scratchboard, drawing, equine art, naquaiya.blogspot, naquaiya

Keywest Sunset Day 2, scratchboard on clayboard NFSI have colored the panel with copper lustres and mother of pearl irridescent for the sun/moon. This looks quite different than the black and white version. The design patterns in the sky are very reflective and it gives an unusual effect, so I'm not disappointed with the coloring--actually I'm happy with it. All those super fine lines look great up close.Take a look with this hyperlink Technorati tags: art, artwork, artist, scratchboard, drawing, naquaiya.blogspot.com

I am interpreting her art into a scratchboard drawing as a gift for her. Hope she doesn't see this blog before she gets her gift. Tomorrow I will post what this looks like when it is colored. Hope it doesn't look better in black & white because I can't take the color out.Technorati tags: art, artwork, artist, scratchboard, drawing, naquaiya.blogspot.com,

Yellow Moon Zebras scratchboard on clayboard11"x1...
Yellow Moon Zebrasscratchboard on clayboard11"x14" print on archivalmatte paper $40 I've been thinking about going back into my portfolio and reworking some old images. Similar to what some people have found out through the painting of eggs on Sunday's gallery. How you paint the same subject matter over time is an interesting and revealing exercise. This basic image of zebras in this grooming pose is one I drew some years ago and the original was large. I decided to try and do it again, with a different outlook and in a very small format. I found that it went quickly and I made several important changes--the moon here is much bigger than my old moon and the yellow cast in the night sky creates the mood I'm looking for. The vegetation is more abstracted and I kept the colors dark so as not to compete with the animals. I concentrated on highlighting only the topline of the animals. I think I want to try this again. Porto Winescratchboard on clayboard7" x 5"I've been exploring wine again. I thought this was an interesting idea to create more of a mood with lights and darks. I'm getting intrigued with distant unusual windows with warm light coming into a dark room. More windows are on the way and more wine too. The label on the bottle says "no nonsense".
