As parents, there are so many decisions to make when having a baby from what type of health care provider you will choose (OB-GYN or midwife or both) to where you will birth (hospital, birthing center, or home) to what will happen immediately after your baby’s born. Among genetic disease testing, vitamin K injections, to [...]

Research results on Circumsition in Rakai district of Uganda, Ron Gray of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and colleagues found approximately a 3% rate of moderate or severe surgical complications - primarily infections - in both HIV-positive and HIV-negative men, when circumcision was performed under optimal conditions. Healing was slower in the HIV-infected men,
Circumcision appears rather a hot issue in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus these days. Two of the PBB boys, Alex Anselmuccio and Kevin Flood, who came primarily from Europe, entered the house of Kuya with their European belief and culture of being uncut, although that has nothing to be focused about. It is in Europe where most boys are not circumcised, or where circumcision is not mandatory

This is revolting. You say ‘female circumcision,’ I say ‘remove the primary pleasure center on a woman’s body so that she can’t ever experience the pleasure a man does during intercourse’. I know, their version’s more succinct.

A common issue confronting people in Africa is the prevalence of forced female circumcision, but in the Meru district of Tanzania, the focus of circumcision is towards males. Gangs oftribesmen who insist all males must be circumcised according to their tribal traditions are invading the homes of males, breaking down doors, and forcing men [...]
Oldest documentary evidence for circumcision comes from EgyptNot really new actually! This so-called new defense have been practiced since say...ancient Egypt. Male circumcision cuts the risk of HIV transmission in men by about 60%. A 2006 study suggests, circumcision could prevent about 6 million HIV infections and 3 million deaths over 20 years. Still, WHO held back its recommendation until recently (so WHO is the one who causes so many deaths?).Circumcision is thought to prevent infection because the underside of the foreskin is rich in immune cells that are particularly vulnerable to HIV. Small tears in the foreskin during intercourse can also allow the virus to slip into the body. Moreover, circumcision could reduce the odds of an infected man's transmitting the virus to a female part
I have previously written quite a lot about circumcision. See for example (1) here, (2) here, or (3) here. Circumcision proponents use different arguments when they try to spread this surgical procedure. Sometimes they say that your hygiene benefits, which may be true if you never ever clean yourself under the foreskin - hardly a reason for removing the foreskin. Another rather medievil argument is that circumcision will make it harder for the child to masturbate, and after all sexual pleasure is something you should avoid! The only potentially valid argument for the use of circumcision, an argument which has only been around for perhaps five years (before that circumcision was conducted for irrational reasons entirely), is that it may reduce the risk of getting HIV if you have unprotected

Claymore Parody - The Chaotic War of circumcision in the North
A 13-year-old Egyptian girl has died during an illegal operation to mutilate her genitalia, the Al-Masri Al-Yom daily reported on Saturday. Karima Rahim Massud died as the result of problems with the anasthaesia in the Nile Delta village of Gharbiya. Her death was discovered after her father sought a death certificate from another doctor. The medical practice where the operation took place has been closed, and the doctor is being interrogated, the newspaper said. Female genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, is a practice that dates back to pharaonic times in Egypt. It is common in a band that stretches from Senegal in West Africa to Somalia on the east coast, and from Egypt in the north to Tanzania in the south. The practice, which affects both Muslim and Christian women in Egypt, was banned in 1997 but doctors were allowed to operate "in exceptional cases." Female circumcision can cause death through haemorraging and later complications during childbirth. It also c
Egypt has announced that it is imposing a complete ban on female circumcision, also known as genital mutilation. The announcement follows a public outcry after a young girl died during the operation. A ban was introduced nearly 10 years ago but the practice continued to be allowed in exceptional circumstances. A health ministry spokesman said no member of the medical profession would be allowed to perform the operation in public or private establishments. ...Links: Chinadaily, BBC
I should've posted this earlier, from an e-mail by SliwaNews: an article from Aftenposten, about Kadra, an opponent of the Muslim belief in female circumcision, who was assaulted by a gang:Norwegian-Somalian Kadra, who became famous in Norway for exposing imam support of female circumcision, was beaten unconscious on Thursday.Kadra was attacked and beaten senseless by seven or eight persons of Somali origin, newspaper VG reports."I was terrified. While I lay on the pavement they kicked me and screamed that I had trampled on the Koran. Several shouted Allah-o-akbar (God is great) and also recited from the Koran," Kadra told VG.Kadra linked the attack to recent remarks in VG where she said that the Koran's views on women needed to be reinterpreted.Kadra said that the gang of Somali men attacked her around 3 a.m. in downtown Oslo on Thursday. A medical examination found that she had several broken ribs, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports. Kadra filed charges and was due to speak with
GENEVA (AP) - U.N. health agencies recommended Wednesday that heterosexual men undergo circumcision because of “compelling” evidence that it can reduce their chances of contracting HIV by up to 60 percent. But World Health Organization and UNAIDS experts said men need to be aware that circumcision is only partial protection against the virus and must be used with other measures.”We must be clear,” said Catherine Hankins of UNAIDS. “Male circumcision does not provide complete protection against HIV.”
Studies suggest 5.7 million new cases of HIV infection and 3 million deaths over 20 years could be prevented by male circumcision in sub-Saharan Africa, the agencies said.
Still, men and women who consider male circumcision as an HIV preventive method need to continue using other forms of protection such as male and female condoms, abstinence, delaying the start of sexual activity and reducing the number of sexual partners, she said.

Following my two posts on male circumcision I have received a fair amount of feedback from which I have learned some new things. The commentators have pointed out where I have been wrong about things and they have also provided some great links that I would like to share with my readers here. After my first entry on the subject I received one comment from anonymous with a link to a blog which is entirely dedicated to male circumcision. Here you can among other things, see pictures of the surgical procedure, and read about the similarities between male and female circumcision. I always thought that female circumcision was quite a bit worse, but it seems that this is not necessarily the case...When I wrote my second entry I also received some very nice feedback. The first comment really makes the general point well. Beanie's Appa, who wrote the comment has got his own blog which you will find here. This is what he wrote (I agree completely with what he says)."Wonderful post. Thank you fo
A few weeks ago I wrote about the cruelty of male circumcision. I wrote that I am opposed to male circumcision because of the fact that the foreskin has many important functions.Since my post some interesting posts with interesting subsequent discussions has appeared on other blogs. If you understand swedish, take a look on ergo ateism here and here, or you can also take a look at Tobias Malm's excellent blog here. In the discussions following these posts some objections to the circumcision objections appeared, that is there were some people who defended circumcision. The four main objections that I recall were.1. People who have their foreskin cut off can have sex for a longer time without ejaculating.2. Circumcision protects against all sorts of different diseases3. "I am circumcised and I haven't noticed anything bad about it"4. Sometimes circumcision need to be done for medical reasons (e.g. foreskin in too tight). The first objection I think is a really bad one for several reason

Today it is quite unthinkable to question the cruelty of female circumcision if you are a relatively informed person. However, to my own amazement, male circumcision (see picture) is still considered by many to be perfectly justified. It must evidently be so, considering how often this surgery is performed on young naive infants. At one point in my life I actually became a little bit ambiguous as to whether circumcision might perhaps be justified. It was last year when, during my exchange year at UCSB, I attended some highly entertaining and informative lectures on Human Sexuality taught by two very charismatic (and married) professors John Baldwin and Janice Baldwin. You can read more about the Baldwins' view on circumcision here. I am not being ironic when I say that these were indeed great lectures, and that is perhaps why they almost convinced me that the costs and benefits associated with male circumcision more or less cancels out. As far as I can remember they referred to two pos
Female circumcision un-Islamic Category: Religion and PhilosophyThere are many sites, blogs and so callel scholers on the internet who will quote Islam incorrectly! Some are misguided and some just want to cause hatred towards muslims. Translations have been interpreted the way the scholar saw fit as an individual.Although there is no reference to circumcision at all in the Qur'an, there is a well-established tradition of male circumcision in Islam as a "sunnah" act (i.e., one following the practice of the Prophet and his companions). There is no mandate at all for female circumcision, however. Although female circumcision is not mandated, one tradition of disputed authenticity permits (but does not encourage) the removal of a minuscule segment of skin from the female prepuce, provided no harm is done. Permitting such a ritual constitutes an act of tolerance by Islamic law for pre-Islamic practices, and may be overruled by the Islamic prohibition against harmful acts. Consider, for exa
CircumcisionCircumcision, known as either bersunat or berkhatan, is one of the most important ceremonies in Malay society, apart from those related to marriage and death. The circumcision, performed by the designated expert known as the tok mudin, usually takes place when a boy is between six and 10 years old. The parents would fix the date for the circumcision, sending out invitations to relatives, friends and neighbours, for the two-day ceremony. On the first day, the boy's hair is cropped in a ceremony called berandam, before he is taken in a procession around the village, which ends when he is placed upon a dais (pelamin). He is usually required to dress appropriately in baju Melayu with a sampin or short sarong. On the second day, the actual circumcision takes place, usually early in the morning. Before the tok mudin arrives, a few items are made ready - a length of white cloth, a jar of water, a live cockerel, a banana tree stem, a tepak sirih (betelnut set), and a
