Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental post-metal/post-rock band from Chicago. Similar to fellow Chicago residents Pelican, Russian Circles play epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal, to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows, which include tours with Minus the Bear and Chin Up Chin Up, as well as an appearance at the 2006 SXSW.Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota) they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. Over the weekend, I did a lot of beadwork! I worked on smoothing out the circular windows on my beaded Beatles Yellow Submarine. If you remember, the Magatamas crowded the red seed beads, and distorted the shape of the borders around the windows.Using a new piece of thread and some matte transparent red seed beads, I did one row of peyote stitch around each window to see if it would help. I return to the Czech Republic in a week's time, but already my thoughts bend that way. Today being a bright crisp Winter's day, my husband and I made the trip to Avebury. The sun was low even in the middle of the day and the stones cast long shadows over the winter grass.Like Cesky Krumlov, Avebury set in its unique prehistoric environment is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even in the Winter the place has its visitors and yet it still has tremendous power - a power that demands wonder. From sunny warm Mediterranean back to a rather wet England with enough weather to mean we had to fly around in circles several times before we could land. I had a quick browse in a book on styles of art, and looked up Frank Stella, as I am just starting a chapter on him in Henry Geldzahler’s book. And there it was, my own doodle! It does give me a a good feeling, my recapitualtion is just about up to my childhood. Eli is going shape crazy. He wants nothing more than to hold a triangle, square, circle and star in his hands at all times. Everything he looks at is just another shape.
