      Chemistry 101
Last night, I came home from the gym, and, after blogging about it, went to go take a shower, during which I finished a container of face scrub. So, I had to go find a new thing of face scrub. Which I know I had in the apartment.Let me back up -- I have a ton of cosmetic-type stuff. I buy stuff, I use it once or twice, and then I find something else I like better. Then it goes into a cabinet until I need it, in which case I have to dig it out. One place where I store a ton of stuff is in a plastic container with a locking lid under my sink. Most of my facial cleansing products wind up there.Anyway, so last night, after my shower, I went to find a facial scrub in this giant plastic container. When I opened it, I found that pretty much the entire thing was covered in a sticky yellowish g

So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we

What can I say? The entire class screwed up.I could tell you why, but it would be an excuse. Last week was the toughest week so far this semester, for me and for everybody else in my Organic Chemistry class. Tests, quizzes, homework assignments, papers, and presentations across all classes all landed in one week.Looking at the test, it was straight forward enough and probably easier than most others. Everyone bombed it. Out of 50 points, over half of the class got less than 25, everyone but two students got less than 30, one person got 31, and another got 40.Instead of curving the test for scores so low (for a class who wouldn't have learned a thing), the teacher made us re-take it open notes / open book. The workload that week was the reason everyone did bad. Me not sticking to my

Anxiety and Depression is caused by an imbalance of brain chemistry. Symptoms are normally dealt with by drugs, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) like Paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft) and Fluoxetine (Prozac).Little do doctors tell you that imbalances in brain chemistry are actually due to poor diet, an unsatisfactory sex life, lack of exercise and lack of support in relationships. Most if not all of these issues are ignored by the average doctor before they administer antidepressant drugs. There is a lack of general mainstream holistic health information and knowledge. Principles of Green Chemistry
Green Chemistry is a revolutionary philosophy that seeks to unite government, academic and industrial communities by placing more focus on environmental impacts at the earliest stage of innovation and invention.  This approach requires an open and interdisciplinary view of material and product design, applying the principle that it is better to consider waste prevention options during the design and development phase, rather than disposing or treating waste after a process or material has been developed. Environmentally benign alternatives to current materials and technologies must be systematically introduced across all types of manufacturing to promote a more environmental and economically sustainable future.   Environmentally benign alternative te

An Effective Team Has Team Chemistry
We’ve all seen it when a certain group of individuals produces outstanding and amazing results. They are congratulated for their team effort. But it’s much more than that. An effective team must have team chemistry! We’ve all heard about or known about sexual chemistry or romantic chemistry in our personal lives. We’ve also all experienced that “guy or gal” that rubs us the wrong way. Grates on our nerves! And that’s why the chemistry of a team in the corporate world can make or break the project, the department, or sometimes even the company.Lets look at two teams who are on the same path striving to meet a team goal. The goal is clear, concise, organized, realistic, and measurable. So why is it that Team A is successful and even over achieves in a shorter time frame then expected, while Team B completes the goal but they are over budget and over the deadline. The answer is team chemistry! With team chemistry comes team cohesion and the ability to work together as a unit a

Tennessee coach Pat Summitt knows teams need perfect chemistry for NCAA title runs (AP)
AP - Oct 18, 4:16 pm EDT More Photos KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Pat Summitt knows talent will only get you so far in college basketball. She’s had Lady Vols teams loaded with stars that haven’t reached the NCAA Final Four. She’s had teams with six and 10 losses win national championships. “Two years ago, we didn’t particularly like each other, we didn’t play well together, we didn’t get to a Final Four,” Summitt said Thursday during Tennessee’s media day. “Last more…

      Chemistry: Titration
Titration is the addition of an acidic solution to a basic solution or when you add a basic solution to an acidic solution. Titrations are used to determine the concentration of acids or bases in solution. An example of a titration is when a given volume of a solution of unknown acidity may be titrated with a base of known concentration until complete neutralization has occurred. This point is called the equivalence point and is generally determined by observing a color change in an indicator. From the volume and concentration of added base and the volume of acid solution, the unknown concentration of the solution before titration can be determined. Titrations can also be used to determine the number of acidic or basic groups in an unknown compound. A specific weight of the compound is titrated with a known concentration of acid or base until the equivalence point has been reached. From the volume and concentration of added acid or base and the initial weight of the compound, the equ

      Daddy’s doing his chemistry…
It took a while but now that James has stopped saying that “Daddy’s doing his French” and gotten the hang of “Daddy’s doing his Spanish”, it’ll soon be time for him to be saying “Daddy’s doing his English”. This time next, all being well, I’ll have just completed my Modern Languages Degree and so ’tis time to think of what to do next… A very long time ago, I’d a choice between doing a Computer Science degree and a Chemistry one and chose the computer route seeing as it was easier and the pay was better. So, I thought I’d have a go at the other route and not too long after Easter next year I’m planning on enrolling for the first course of said chemistry degree which looks pretty interesting and should keep me out of trouble for the next six or seven years. On the other hand the physics degree looks quite interesting too although it sounds a whole lot harder at this point. Still, both French

      Chemistry: Electronegativity
This is the tendency to attract a pair of electrons across a covalent bond. When across a covalent bond, the elements have the same, or almost the same, electronegativity, the bonded electrons are shared equally by the two nucleii across the bond. eg: H-H, O=O, C-H However, when across a covalent bond, the two elements have different electronegativities, the more electronegative element attracts slightly closer to itself the electron pair in the bond. It then acquires a partial negative charge and the other element acquires a partial positive charge. The molecule is then said to be polar or to possess a dipole. eg: (d+)H-F(d-), (d+)H-O-H(d+) In the periodic table, electronegativity, increases across periods 2 and 3. This is because effective nuclear charge is increasing with proton number. But, down the group, effective nuclear charge decreases with increase in shielding effect, such that electronegativity decreases.

      Chemistry: Electron Affinity
Electron Affinity is the process during which one mol of a gaseous atom accepts mol of electron to form one mol of a gaseous unipositive ion. This process is always accompanied by an energy change. Across period 2 and 3, from left to right, electron affinity increases. This is because proton number is increasing and effective nuclear charge is increasing. Na, Mg and Al lose electrons to attain rare gas configuration. Therefore they have: +ve kJ/mol dH(ea) Si, P, S and Cl accept electrons to attain rare gas configuration. Therefore they have: -ve kJ/mol dH(ea) The above is true for elements that form uninegative ions. When an element forms a dinegative ion, it accepts the electrons successively. This means that there are two energy changes. Considering Oxygen, the first EA is exothermic. This is because the oxygen atom readily accepts the incoming electron to complete its outermost orbital. Also, its effective nuclear charge is relatively large. However, the second EA of oxygen is highl

      Chemistry: Ionisation Energy
Ionisation Energy Ionisation is the process during which an outermost electron is removed from a gaseous atom so as to produce a gaseous unipositive ion. The first ionisation energy is the amount of energy required to remove 1 mol of electron from 1 mol of a gaseous monoatomic element so as to form 1 mol of gaseous unipositive ions. X(g) —–> X+(g) + e- dH = +ve kJ/mol The second ionisation energy is the amount of energy required to remove 1 mol of electron from 1 mol of a gaseous unipositive ion of an element so as to form 1 mol of gaseous dipositive ions. X+(g) —–> X2+(g) + e- dH = +ve kJ/mol The successive ionisation energies of a species increases. This is because the unchanged nuclear charge pulls the lesser number of electrons closer. Cationic radius is smaller than atomic radius. Factors that influence First IE 1. Proton Number (Nuclear Charge) The larger the proton number, the higher the first IE. This is because the electrons are held with a grea

Green Chemistry Mimics the Cellular Process of Drug Synthesis
Two studies were published in the September 2007 issue of Nature Chemical Biology demonstrating for the first time that it’s possible to take a complex chain of enzymatic reactions and reconstruct them in vitro (meaning in a test tube) to synthesize a natural product that has therapeutic potential. Many natural products have prospective use as drugs. However, the chemistry required to create the molecules is complex. Penicillin was one of the earliest discovered antibiotic compounds produced and isolated from a living organism. In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming observed that the mold Penicillium notatum could kill colonies of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (1). Over a decade later, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain isolated the active ingredient and successfully treated mice that had been given lethal doses of bacteria (2). The combined efforts of these three men and others literally changed the practice of medicine by the mid-1940s. With advances in organic chemistry, many antibio

DAD: Yes, I was in the shower. SARAH: Why? DAD: I was dirty. The shower gets me clean. SARAH: Why? DAD: Why does the shower get me clean? SARAH: Yes. DAD: Because the water washes the dirt away when I use soap. SARAH: Why? DAD: Why do I use soap? SARAH: Yes. DAD: Because the soap grabs the dirt and lets the water wash it off. SARAH: Why? DAD: Why does the soap grab the dirt? SARAH: Yes. DAD: Because soap is a surfactant. SARAH: Why? DAD: Why is soap a surfactant? SARAH: Yes. DAD: That is an EXCELLENT question. Soap is a surfactant because it forms water-soluble micelles that trap the otherwise insoluble dirt and oil particles. SARAH: Why? DAD: Why does soap form micelles? SARAH: Yes. DAD: Soap molecules are long chains with a polar, hydrophilic head and a non-polar, hydrophobic tail. Can you say ‘hydrophilic’? SARA

The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products
American industry would have you believe that taking potentially hazardous and toxic chemicals out of everyday consumer products -- removing phthalates from children's toys and cancer-causing coal tar from hair dye -- would damage our economy and result in a loss of American jobs. In his latest book, Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products, Mark Schapiro busts this myth and reveals the grim fact that some companies, whether American or international, often have two production lines: one that manufactures hazard-free products for the European Union and another that produces toxin-filled versions of the same items for America and developing countries.
