The field of green chemistry focuses on the design, manufacture and use of chemicals, products and processes to reduce or eliminate adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Advancements in the field will support businesses and industries, as well as communities, workers and public agencies in their efforts to minimize the use of toxic chemicals in industrial processes and products. Advancements in green chemistry practices can also open new opportunities for green collar jobs, while at the same time ensuring that these new jobs are also safer jobs. In addition to presenting the findings of our recent report to California EPA, Green Chemistry: Cornerstone to a Sustainable California (), we will address the following topics: Long-standing weaknesses in federal policy that

Some of the products for which the Environmental Protection Agency process for determining cancer and other health risks has been delayed: - Naphthalene, a chemical used in rocket fuel and manufacturing a wide range of commercial products, including mothballs, dyes and insecticides. It is a major source of contamination at many military bases. The EPA wants to determine if it should be reclassified from a "possible" to "likely" human carcinogen. A long-standing dispute with the Pentagon over the chemical prompted the White House in 2004 to initiate a new EPA policy requiring more interagency involvement in assessing the health risks of a chemical. "Six years after the naphthalene assessment began, it is now back at the drafting stage," said the Government Accountability Office. -

By Marla Cone, L.A. Times Staff Writer, source: ionizers.orgIn the largest study of chemical exposure ever conducted on human beings, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that most American children and adults were carrying in their bodies dozens of pesticides and toxic compounds used in consumer products, many of them linked to potential health threats. The report documented bigger doses in children than in adults of many chemicals, including some pyrethroids, which are in virtually every household pesticide, and phthalates, which are found in nail polish and other beauty products as well as in soft plastics. The CDC's director, Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, called the national exposure report - the third in an assessment that is released biennially - a break
Environmental Health News is always full of interesting stories, and a quiet Sunday like today is no exception.Although climate change is the big, bad issue that's getting ever more attention, it's definitely not the only problem we're facing. Soil scientists and geologists have been trying to get more attention for the fact that we're using up the lifeblood of civilization, at a rate 10 to 20 times faster than it's replenished, our soil. Scientists working on how to boost fertility and even make soil from scratch are doing important work without most of us even realizing we've got a problem.Another increasingly worrying problem is the amount of chemicals we've poured into our environment. Suspecting there's a problem, getting funding for research are only the easiest part of the battle in

The country’s largest drug maker, Ranbaxy Laboratories, has entered into strategic business alliance with the Chennai-based Orchid Chemicals. The pact involves multiple geographies and therapies for both finished dosage forms and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for several products. This alliance will give Ranbaxy access to Orchid’s product range, including cepholosporins and will allow Orchid to leverage Ranbaxy’s distribution network. The agreement will pave way for future co-operation between the two companies. The companies however refused to divulge details of the deal. The agreement will be mutually beneficial and synergistic, allowing both the companies to leverage each others’ inherent strengths.
The Canadian government may be ready to declare bisphenol-A (BPA) toxic. BPA is a chemical widely used in plastics for baby bottles, beverage and food containers.
A unnamed source with knowledge of the government’s chemical review program said that the staff work to list the compound as a toxic chemical was complete and was recently endorsed by a panel of outside scientists.
Such a declaration would make Canada the first country to make a health finding against B.P.A., which has been shown to disrupt the hormonal systems of animals.
Rick Smith, the executive director of Environmental Defence, a Canadian group that has been campaigning against BPA, said: “If the government issues a finding of toxic, no parent in their right mind will be using products made with this chemical. We will b

I recently came across an article in Newsweek called "The Chemicals Within". It was filled with shocking statistics, quotes and studies about BPA, Phthalates, and PBDEs (flame retardants). The article starts by describing a biomonitoring project where people's blood and urine are tested for the presence of chemicals. And they found potentially harmful chemicals in all the people they tested, no matter where they lived (even in remote Alaska), in the categories of BPA, Phthalates and PBDEs. What really stopped me in my tracks was this quote, from a cosponsor of the study, Sharyle Patton of the group Commonweal. "Our babies are being born pre-polluted. This is going to be the next big environmental issue after climate change." Let that sink in. Another topic discussed was the ancient

The European Union has already completed extensive research on many of these chemicals and is phasing out or banning usage in their products (hence the "EU compliant" label many organic and natural labeled prodcuts carry). This act desperately needs an update and the chemical industry (along with their lobbyists and cash) will fight this tooth and nail. Some very disturbing news is exposed in the San Francisco Chronicle today. We all know that as nurses we are exposed to chemicals, germs, and a whole lot of unknown problems everyday. It's just part of the risks we take to help others. But how much exposure is too much? And what is being done to protect us?The results of an online survey of 1500 nurses in the U.S. conducted by the Environmental Working Group and Health Care Without Harm shows that nurses are being affected by their exposure to eleven common health care chemicals. These common chemicals include:hand disinfectantscleaning agentslatexchemotherapy drugs and antiretroviralsgasses used in anesthesiaproducts containing mercuryshampoos and soapschemicals used to sterilize equipmentThe results of the survey show that nurses who were regularly exposed to these chemicals had increased rates of asthma, caner and miscarriages. In the late 1990s, citizens of several European countries learned from newspaper reports that their infants were constantly being exposed to a host of toxic chemicals. Babies were sleeping in pajamas treated with cancer-causing flame retardants; they were sucking on bottles laced with plastic additives believed to alter hormones; their diapers were glued together with nerve-damaging toxins normally used to kill algae on the hulls of ships. When European health officials tried to look into the matter, they were confounded by how little they actually knew about these and other potentially hazardous chemicals. Regulators discovered that they had no way of assessing the dangers of long-term exposure to everyday products. Some manufacturers of baby goods did not even know what was in their own products, since chemical producers were under no obligation to tell them. Such data, if it existed at all, was secreted away in the vaults of chemical companies and had never been submitted to any gov

One way to help remove grease as well as sanitize your range is with the use of vinegar in a spray bottle. Mix 1 part water to 1 part white distilled vinegar and spray the range top. Let sit for about ten minutes then wipe down with a cotton cloth (a knobby cloth works better - the texture also helps scrub away food particles). You can also add a few drops of any liquid soap to the spray bottle for increased grease-cutting. It’s usually easiest, and faster, to pull the knobs off, spray, then wipe and replace the knobs than to carefully try to clean around the knobs.
Another natural sanitizer is tea tree oil, which can be purchased from most health food stores. Use a few drops in a bottle with water, spray the range, and then let sit. Be aware that tea tree oil has a strong odor (similar to turpentine) that may be unpleasant for some people. There is also some recent research that tea tee oil may cause undesirable hormonal changes in boys, so it might be best to avoid this natural

As you recall, many cats died earlier this year after eating tainted pet food. Now, a study by UC Davis shows that the combination of cyanuric acid and melamine cause kidney failure in cats.
Two chemicals found in recalled pet food during spring 2007 are relatively harmless alone but, if combined, create a deadly mix when consumed by cats, report researchers at the University of California, Davis.
A pilot study, led by veterinary toxicologist Birgit Puschner and colleagues at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, found that cats that were fed pet food spiked with both melamine and cyanuric acid quickly experienced acute kidney failure. Cats that received food containing only one or the other of those two chemicals experienced no ill effects.
Results of the study, believed to be the first report on the combined effects of melamine and cyanuric acid in any animal species, are published in the November issue of the Journal o

Doing the clothes wash can hardly be classified as an eco friendly practice, but obviously this sort of thing needs to go on, otherwise we would be going around with some really bad smelling clothes and then everyone would be complaining.

Do not trust any product to be safe for your child, just because you see it in a respected chain store, or it is manufactured by a large American household-name company. Chemicals found in common household products can contribute to developmental and behavioral disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mental retardation, even autism, allergies and cancer. Parents of Rowan and Mikaela in Oakland got a wake up call a few years ago, when the family was asked to attend a voluntary blood testing to measure the industrial chemicals in their bodies. The family agreed, they didn't have any reason to believe that there could be something wrong. After all, the family did not own a TV and mainly ate organic food and were environmentally concious. The test results showed that even 18-months-old Rowan had extremely high levels of chemicals in his body. Rowan is now a healthy 5-year-old, but the chemicals found in his body could cause thyroid dysfunction or other risks

New segment time! Also widely known as Chris has had a busy week but still wants to keep up appearances on his blog so that people don't think he's quitting or anything. Once in a while, I get drug and/or poison-related questions emailed to me. I usually try and respond to the best of my abilities, which for the most part consists of referring to my textbooks and pulling stuff out of my butt. Here is a question email I received a while back:My mom and I have been having kind of a dispute about the permeability of chemicals to your skin. She believes that your skin breathes and that's why you can't cover it, as brought fourth [sic] in the James Bond movie. She takes it one step further to say that things like lotionscan be absorbed by your skin and have adverse health affects similar to eating the lotion. I disagree, the skin outright has no structure or role in breathing. I understand that some things can be absorbed by the skin, like the chemicals in nicotine and pregnancy patches
A new EU-funded study on infants will examine the impact on the health of newborns of chemicals currently found in baby foods. The project, started by the German National Research Centre for Environment and Health (GSF), will focus in particular on chemicals which affect the hormone system.Depending on the findings, the project's conclusions could have severe reprecussions for baby food manufacturers if any adverse effects are found.

THE wife of a BNP council candidate accused of stockpiling chemicals for a civil war reported him after he stopped her watching the television, a court heard. Kerena Cottage, 29, reported Robert, her husband of three-years, after he became "radical" in his religious and political views and removed the TV aerial to shield her from "government propaganda". Louise Blackwell, prosecuting, said: "He became more religious and controlling of her. "He removed the aerial from the television so she couldn't watch what he described as the brainwashing material being put out by the government." School bus driver Cottage, 49, is jointly accused with former dentist David Jackson, 62, of conspiring to cause an explosion between 1 January 2006 and 30 September 2006. Cottage admitted possessing explosives between the same dates during a previous trial. But Jackson, of Trent Street, Nelson, denies the charge. Yesterday, Manchester Crown Court, heard that Cottage took delivery of 11 boxes of chemicals a
Researcher Richard Bence, a biochemist who has studied conventional products for three years, estimates women's bodies absorb almost 5 pounds of toxic chemicals per year from the use of toiletries and beauty products.Putting chemicals on the skin is actually far worse than ingesting them, he explains, because when you eat something the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help break it down and flush it out. When you put it on your skin, however, it is absorbed straight into your blood stream without filtering of any kind, so there's no protection against the toxin.Nine out of 10 women also use products that are past their use-by date--lipstick and mascara being the two most commonly products being used past their prime--which can turn them into hothouses for aggressive bacterial growth. Many of the synthetic compounds found in cosmetics and toiletries have been linked to side effects like skin irritation, premature aging and cancer. Parabens--used as preservatives
Article Title: Pet Odor Removal: Doing Away With ChemicalsAuthor: IPRWire Staff WriterHave you just finished potty training your new puppy? There isoften great relief when your young dog finally gets that theyare supposed to go outdoors to use the bathroom, but with thatrelief often comes the realization that in your home you have ahuge pet odor removal problem. When your new puppy goes to thebathroom around the home, it can be difficult to get the stainsout of the floor, let alone get all of the smells out of thecarpet and carpet padding. The problem with puppies is that they often might use placesthat you did not even see, so you may have missed theopportunity to keep the urine from soaking into the carpetpadding. If you have linoleum floors, the urine can also seepdown below the surface of the floor and into the flooring, causing unwanted scents. While your puppy may now be pottytrained, your house might smell more like a kennel than ever! Who wants to return to the

Today there was another question about chromatography on “Yahoo! Answers” from naisy428:
What chemicals can be detected using a Gas Chromatography?
Here is my very short, simplified answer. There are actually two types of Gas Chromatography - Gas-Solid and Gas-Liquid depending on the kind of column is used:
GSC (Gas-Solid Chromatography) allows to separate and hence detect low-molecular-mass gases such as air component (nitrogen, oxygen, CO2), hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides.
GLC (Gas-Liquid Chromatography) - this type is very widespread in all fields of science and that’s why when people say “GC” they usually refer to gas-liquid chromatography. This type of GC is mostly used to determine organic compounds such as hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatics, fatty acids, alcohols, ethers, essential oils or any other volatile compound. What GC can detect greatly depends on the column and detector used. Generally speaking, GC is not suita
