"Eagle Nebula Study 1"Completed: 1.27.08mixed media: acrylics, watercolors, marker, charcoalHere is my first study for my Eagle Nebula painting. I like the colors I started with in the center where the triangle shape is. I used all the colors I saw in the photos first, but I think I might want to select just a few colors to use. I'm leaning towards blues, greens, oranges, and blacks. I then added the bigger stars with silver acrylic paint with a paint brush, then smaller stars with toothbrush bristles. In the process, I shook the acrylic paint bottle to get the paint near the lid. However, I forgot that the lid was not on all the way, and it flew off. I was covered with "stars" and am still doing laundry... :DShannon

I could barely contain my enthusiasm... this was a tea I remembered loving in the late 90s, which was discontinued by Celestial Seasonings and which I thought I'd never taste again. Miraculously, they brought it back after 7-8 years of petitions and letters from avid fanatics of the tea. Here it was. Every now and then a record comes along which reminds me why I do this. I was thinking just yesterday that it's been quite a slow month as far as good records are concerned and then without warning the debut album from Celestial appears. I'd heard the earlier E.P.s and stuff so I knew what I was expecting but what I got was not far from indiepop perfection. Celestial is basically just one guy called Andreas Hagman, who as the name might suggest hails from that current hotbed of indie cuteness, Sweden. I have been deliberately avoiding Swedish bands on Burning World over the last year or so because as exellent as many of them are they do get loads of coverage elseware, and quite rightly so. This record though is so good that I would have to remove my eyebrows with an electric sander if I didn't give it it's dues. Great photography shows you subjects you might well be familiar with, but presents them in a way that you hadn’t seen before; it allows you to think about things from a new perspective. In this regard the work of Edward Weston and Josef Sudek immediately come to my mind. Then there is photography that shows you things that you can’t see because of the physical limitations of the human eye. Infrared photography, astrophotography and prolonged exposures come to mind. Evaluating these type of images is a bit harder, because one has to overcome that initial ‘wow’ factor that occurs when viewing something that has previously remained invisible. But merely removing the cloak of invisiblility is not sufficient to make a photograph exceptional. One has to assess what is left when the ‘gimmick’ is removed.
