It's the little things which envelop us in the mysteries of life and the world around us. How glorious a gentle caterpillar preparing to make his cocoon is. the vibrant yellows and blacks curled around him pinch your eyes. But he is only a shadow of what he will be. For the same creature to have the experience of both being earthbound to crawl through the trenches of dirt and being free to glide along the breeze is astounding. Metamorphosis. It gives any of us who struggle through the muck and mud hope that we could someday transform ourselves.
While having a picnic at a local park Saturday afternoon, I felt something on my leg. I reached under the picnic table and brushed something off my leg. I immediately tried to process the sensation of prickly hairs and the surprising weight of the something I had touched. As I filled with adrenaline, I looked under the picnic table to find the largest caterpillar I have ever seen.
I was pretty creeped out for a while, and my sandwich never really tasted the same after the incident. I finally took the caterpiller over to a nearby tree to spare future picnic’ers.
coming home today i saw this caterpillar hanging for his life on a single branch of a yellow flower bearing tree. but i guess he is doing well. thanks to all those feets. who will ever thought that this caterpillar in time will soon become a colorful butterfly. lessons in real estate: it always takes time for everything to sell. place your feets firmly on the ground. its all about not giving up and hanging on.

Processionary Caterpillar Here is another photo of the hairy "Processionary Caterpillar" we have been observing (see my previous post Caterpillar Migration). We have been tracking these caterpillars (caterpillers?) for the past few days, and have seen them processing many times now. They seem to be moving back and forth between the middle of our drive way (a very inconvenient position for us!), and a few camphor-laurel trees we have about. They appear to be able to move very quickly when they want to! Hopefully they settle down soon to pupate, otherwise someone will run over them sooner or later!Other blogs:
