When I was a freshman in high school we were required to take a one semester health course. Most of the course was about general nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Needless to say the course for the most part was not very exciting and generally considered a grade point average (GPA) enhancer. There is one part of that class which stands out and am actually happy to have learned; cardiac pulmonary

The world’s smallest wearable cardiac monitor, a toffee-sized silicon locket, is almost ready at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B). While the tiny computer that can store a week’s electrocardiogram (ECG) data awaits a manufacturer, it is already in demand. IIT engineers borrow it, rig some adjustments and the locket meant to monitor a heart without hospital visits measures tremors in buildings instead.“I would be the first to buy one for my mother. The Daily Mail features a story about Princess Diana and her long time love Mr Hasnat Khan a cardiac surgeon. At that time, he was the senior registrar under the famous Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, the world's number one heart surgeon. The Daily Mail quotes Diana is being a difficult lover. Of course, the biggest mistake Diana made was to fall in love with someone like Mr Khan who clearly wasn't worthy of her. Lets get down to basics - the problem with men who are doctors is that they make bad lovers. They are arrogant, inconsiderate, love the attention which pampers their ego but in the end have no idea how to be attentive, considerate nor do they have any idea about love. Compounded with that, muslim men will always flock towards their own. Imran Khan is an exception but then he stands by what he believes in. It was true that I dated an extremely rich muslim man in 1992 at medical school. He was the guy who had chased me for almost two months. Despite the expensive gifts, the expens

Some Comic Book villains and ideas are better than others. This is probably the worst though. Cardiac, a super villain of sorts made trouble for the Amazin Spiderman on many occasions, and boy was it a stinker. As revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man #376, Elias Wirtham is a doctor driven by his brother's death to researching life-saving medical practices. His brother's death was the result of corporate greed, who had a cure for his condition ready, but did not distribute the medicine due to it not being a "profitable" time for them, hence his motivation against corporations. As a part of his research, Elias replaces his heart with a beta-particle reactor, which supplies energy throughout his body, in addition to a vibranium weave mesh under his skin. This energy, channeled through his muscles, increases his speed, agility, and reflexes, and can also be fired through his fists or the power staff he wields. He adopts the moniker "Cardiac" in reference to the source of his power. That is ac

Angina-like non-cardiac chest pain of esophageal origin was proposed by Hippocrates. For many years the concept of “esophageal spasm” has held its place in the medical literature although documenting consistent esophageal motility disorders in these patients has been difficult. Recent work by Richter et al has demonstrated that up to 50% of patients with anginal-like chest pain and negative cardiac catheterizations in fact have GE reflux disease, and certainly a trial of proton pump inhibitor therapy is warranted in patients with anginal-like pain and negative cardiac workups.
According to new Mayo Clinic study, a massage therapy could help decrease the intensity of pain in patients recovering after a heart surgery, reports Science Daily.
Within a span of five months, 58 patients undergoing surgery participated in a study, to examine the effect of massage on intensity of pain, post-surgery. Thirty participants, who received massage, [...]

From the New England Journal of Medicine, March 11, 2004Cohn and Edmunds have edited exactly the kind of state-of-the-art textbook that is essential for practitioners and students of cardiac surgery. Such a book is needed because innovations in surgical technique and in strategies for the treatment of cardiac disease and the controversies surrounding the introduction of such new practices are appearing at an ever-accelerating pace. An up-to-date understanding of the theory and practice of modern cardiac surgery is critical to those interested or participating in the field. The fundamentals of cardiac surgery, including normal cardiac anatomy and physiology, drug therapies, and monitoring techniques, are appropriately covered in this book, typically as individual chapters. Also included among the 65 chapters are such topics as tissue engineering and therapeutic angiogenesis and the newly introduced techniques of off-pump surgery and laser revascularization. The cardiac action potential is a specialized action potential in the heart, with unique properties necessary for function of the electrical conduction system of the heart.2.)The cardiac action potential differs significantly in different portions of the heart. This differentiation of the action potentials allows the different electrical characteristics of the different portions of the heart. For instance, the specialized conduction tissue of the heart has the special property of depolarizing without any external influence. This is known as automaticity.3.)The electrical activity of the specialized conduction tissues are not apparent on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG). This is due to the relatively small mass of these tissues compared to the myocardium.CARDIAC POTENTIAL1.)Cardiac muscle has some similarities to neurons and skeletal muscle, as well as important unique properties. One of the things that people are unaware of when they sleep is that of potential health risks and hazards such as heart related problems such as cardiac arrest. People know what to do or where to go when they are conscious. But what does a person do when he is asleep and is unknowingly suffering from it. The whole ordeal is left up to how a person entirely takes care of himself.
Banking on physician’s advice is a good measure to satisfy this obvious predicament. People may not be able to notice such health disorders, but they can do preventive maintenance measures with the aid of doctors on hand. Various tests and observation can be done on a person and this is the best way to identify if a person has indeed been suffering from such a problem.
It is better to act in advance than wait for a person in not being able to get up. It is the best way to prevent potential heart risks such as cardiac arrest.

Birth Defects Res B Dev Reprod Toxicol. 2006 Dec 22; [Epub ahead of print] First trimester exposure to paroxetine and risk of cardiac malformations in infants: the importance of dosage. Bérard A, Ramos E, Rey E, Blais L, St-André M, Oraichi D. Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. BACKGROUND: Conflicting findings with regard to the teratogenic risks of first trimester use of paroxetine have prompted the FDA, Health Canada, and the manufacturer of the drug to issue warnings against its use during pregnancy. Given that untreated depression during pregnancy can lead to deleterious effect on the mother and her unborn fetus, data on the relationship between the dose and the range of malformations is warranted. This study attempts to quantify the association between first trimester exposure to paroxetine and congenital cardiac malformations, adjusting for possible confounders, and to quantify the dose-response relationship between paroxetine use and cardiac d
