Instead, while looking through a recipe magazine I subscribed to, I found a recipe for Chocolate

Last night I attended the opening night of the Democratic National Convention and heard Michelle Obama speak. And I caught myself feeling as though I was listening to someone’s sister or mother, or even my own.

Since we're on a 'cake mix cookie' kick here, let's go a step farther and try caramel! This one is similar to a cookie recipe that Moms and Grandma's have been making for years using Rolo Caramel Candies only this one cheats (a little bit) and uses a cake mix as the base. You can’t always get what you want. You can’t always get what you want…
Oh sure, it's all fun and games now...
I am a surf goddess. At least, that is what I want you to think when you see this picture. I think I pull off the look quite well. But as I have learned many times in Australia, luck can be a fickle mistress, sometimes bestowing you with treasures beyond your wildest dreams, and at other times, getting your hopes up only to let you down at the last minute. In my two experiences surfing, my luck has mainly fallen in the latter category.

The Japanese Kit Kat saga continues with no signs of slowing down. Those Candy Addicts who are new to the satisfying hobby of international candy eating may not know that Nestle, who makes KitKat in Asia (Hershey makes Kit Kat in the U.S.) seem to never tire of developing new, occasionally strange, varieties of the chocolate confection. I present to you three more additions to the ever-growing list of new members of the KitKat family:
Vanilla Beans KitKat
Vanilla Beans KitKat tastes exactly like vanilla frosting. It has a pleasant vanilla fragrance, and it’s extremely creamy. The white chocolate coats your tongue a little. Nice.
Caramel KitKat
These were by far my favorite, although I think they would be much more accurately described as butterscotch. They look like regular chocolate KitKats but with caramel tiger-stripes. They’re very rich, the caramelized-but-not-burnt sugar flavor overpowers the chocolate a bit, but they still blend nicely and have a really butt

I can hardly believe that my trip to Pittsburgh was only 2 1/2 weeks ago; our October has been really full! When I was there, I got a great candy bar that I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, from Chocopologie, that was dark chocolate with burnt caramel and sea salt. Great stuff!
If this is the only entry you’re reading here, you haven’t yet heard about the wine party we had last weekend, but it was not only a great party, it also has provided me with all kinds of stuff to write about. I made a dessert for the party to mimic the candy bar I got in Pittsburgh.
The dessert started with something I saw as I flipped through the channels a while back. I found a recipe for chocolate creme fraiche pot; I don’t really care much for the show it came from, but then Alton Brown is about the only food show host I really like, but the dish looked interested because it 1) sounds good, and 2) is really easy to make. So for a big party or just when you don’t have time, th
After a very, very long day I sat down at the computer and started to surf for some 'bar' ideas. This one caught my eye - for whatever reason it sounded delicious to me! I think it's because I'm a big fan of the coconut pecan frosting! It also calls for a French Vanilla cake mix, which is interesting to me. Why? Because I've tried the French Vanilla Cake mix as a 'cake' previously and
Caramel apples have always been one of my favorite treats to eat during carnivals, fairs, and those types of things. Ever since that day I had my braces removed, I've been craving for some caramel covered apples. I've never made them myself, so I decided to give it a try.First stop was the supermarket, to pick up all the goodies. Three simple ingredients did it all: Granny Smith apples, Caramel, and Peanuts. At the supermarket, we debated between two options:1. using packaged caramel wraps specially made for caramel apples, or2. buying a plastic tub of caramel and melting it ourselves. We decided to give the caramel wraps a try. Looking at the directions printed on the back of the package, the process seemed simple and easy. It had just enough wraps for 5 apples. It came with the wooden Popsicle sticks. Plus, cleanup would be a breeze! At home...First, we washed the apples with warm water to remove the wax coating. Then, we crushed some peanuts using a spiky mallet on a wooden cutting bo

Although you may not have heard of her yet, Caramel Bella Katori Hall is a playwright on the rise. The 26-year-old’s first theater production, “Hoodoo Love” begins previews today in the Cherry Lane Theater in New York City’s West Village. The play officially opens on November 1st.
In Sunday’s New York Times article, Hall discloses that her earliest plays “were staged in a Fisher-Price dollhouse in [her] Memphis living room, and she was the author, director, doll handler, and entire audience.” Hall has come a long way since her childhood dollhouse days. At 13 she wrote articles for the teenage section in the Memphis newspaper. She has also wrote articles and essays for the Boston Globe and other publications. However, the love of playwrighting is her passion.
“I love my people’s history, ” said Ms. Hall to the NYT. She studied African-American culture and creative writing at Columbia. “I feel a huge responsibility
Guess who is leaving Los Angeles for New York and London? Latina Caramel Bella, Rosario Dawson!
Dawson had a hard time chosing between Las Vegas and London, so she chose both. About her move to London, Dawson told People magazine, “It’s an incredible hub. I’m going to be right next to the Paris train. I love it. I’m a big traveler. I can get to Rome in two hours. And Scotland and Ireland.” Plus, she added, “I feel like it’s time to live outside the country.”
And for Las Vegas, she said, “It’s an up-and-coming state!”
Still despite her location, Dawson tells People she’ll never be far from her family.
“The Latino community is about the family,” she says. “You can get really lost, and you lose touch. But if you’re with your family, they can say, ‘Come on, I … changed your diapers.’ ”
Although many of us in Los Angeles will miss Dawson, it is great that she wants to

Known for her roles in Rent, Clerks II, Men in Black II and Sin City, Caramel Bella Rosario Dawson has produced and starred in her own film, Descent. The psychological thriller was produced by her newly formed company called Trybe Films. The multiethnic beauty of Irish, Native American, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican descent plays the role of “Maya, a college coed who turns into a vengeful seductress after a shocking act of violence” according to a MovieWeb.com article. The movie was written by Talia Lugacy and Brian Priest.
It’s encouraging to see and hear about new movie production companies formed by women of color. Diversity is often underrepresented in the production ranks as well as in the acting world. Trybe’s principles include Dawson, Lugacy and Priest. Look for Rosario’s movie on DVD to check out both her acting and producing talents.

I love Sugar Babies. I love their cute, conveniently “poppable” small size. I love their rich, sweet caramel taste and the long chew they provide your mouth. I love how they won’t melt in the summer heat. So to say I was excited, when I saw the new Caramel Apple Sugar Babies in their bright cheery green box at my local store, is quite an understatement.
Once I was home I immediately opened the box to see what these new Sugar Babies looked like. I was surprised when I rolled the first few into my hand. Whoa, these were so strange! The coating is a matte bright green and they seriously looked like plastic peas! The felt a little greasy to the touch, yet they didn’t leave any residue on my fingers. Again, strange.
The coating comes off immediately once it’s in your mouth. It’s the standard sour green apple Jolly Rancher flavor. It really hits your taste buds, as the flavor comes rushing in like a tsunami and then disappears just as quickly. Then the Su

Ojani Noa, Jennifer Lopez’s first husband, is seeking to publish a tell-all book about his 11-month marriage to Jennifer.
In a FoxNews.com/AP report, he says “’This is about my life, coming here from Cuba and falling in love with Jennifer,’ Noa said.”
However, Jennifer appears to believe otherwise. She filed a Superior Court breach of contract suit nine months ago and sought arbitration. She also got a restraining order which stopped Noa from publishing intimate details of their sex life. The ghostwritten book allegedly tells stories about her extramarital affairs including one with current husband, Marc Anthony.
Ms. Lopez appears to have won the first round. The fight over the book will now take place in private arbitration. And Jennifer was awarded $545,000 in damages according to The WashingtonPost.com.

Beautiful Thandie Newton known for her roles in “Mission Impossible II”, “Crash”, ”Beloved,” “Norbit” and “The Pursuit of Happyness” talked to People magazine recently about her battle with bulimia, an eating disorder.
For those of you less familiar with the illness, Wikipedia defines bulimia as “an eating disorder. It is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by intentional purging. This purging is done in order to compensate for the excessive intake of food, usually to prevent weight gain. Purging can take the form of vomiting; inappropriate use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics or other medication; or excessive physical exercise.”
“I had terrible bulimia for about a year,” the British-born, Pursuit of Happyness actress, 34, tells the U.K.’s Easy Living magazine in its September issue. “I’ve still got the scars on my knuckles from where I pu

I’ve never lived close to any Cinnabon locations, and I’ve never eaten one of their heavily lauded cinnamon rolls, but I’ve always wanted to sample some of their goods. I recently got my chance to taste one of their products, Cinnabon Cinnamon Caramel Pecan Clusters, when I found a 4.2 oz box of them during a trip to Big Lots. At $1.99, the price was low enough for me to give them a shot.
The box contains six pieces of candy, separated by a clear plastic divider. They look like an average caramel pecan cluster and smell strongly of chocolate, but they also emit a whiff of Cinnabon’s signature Makara cinnamon. The clusters consist of a layer of glazed pecans topped with cinnamon-flavored caramel and covered in chocolate.
The pecan layer is a bit more sparse than your usual pecan caramel cluster, and the chocolate is slightly waxy and unremarkable, but the selling point of this candy is its cinnamon caramel. The cinnamon is subtle at fi
It's my Aunt Verla's birthday today. I'm hosting the celebratory dinner. She requested Rack of Lamb with Duchess Potatoes and salad. For dessert? She asked for Rice Pudding. No decadent tiered chocolately numbers, no smooth and creamy cheesecakes,no baked expectations! She wanted that staid old stand by of my youth. I know she'll give me the "what for" when she sees I tarted her old fave up just a bit, but I've made this previously and aside from the fact that it's more aesthetically pleasing than the above mentioned "classic", it's also very tasty!Rice Pudding with Caramel Sauce1 cup uncooked rice 4 cups milk 4 tablespoons butter or margarine 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided use1/4 teaspoon salt 5 large eggs, separated 1/2 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup blanched slivered almonds, toasted 1/3 cup amaretto liqueur 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Caramel Sauce (recipe follows)Combine rice, milk and salt in large saucepan. My kids love when I get time to make them homemade cinnamon or caramel rolls for breakfast. I suppose I could always buy the canned kind, or even cheat by using frozen bread dough, but there is something wonderful about starting from scratch and making them yourself. This recipe is coming to you from my cousin. She included it in a family cookbook we published a few years ago and they are a
I am d-u-m-b. Last Tuesday was my dad’s birthday. My mom wouldn’t be home until the weekend, so I planned a Saturday dinner to cook for him. I had hoped to secretly make his favorite dessert, chocolate soufflés with creamy caramel sauce, while he was at the airport picking up my mother.
All was going according to plan… I whipped up the soufflé batter, put it in the ramekins, and tucked them way back in the fridge. I had Henning do the dishes to get rid of the evidence. I started to make the creamy caramel sauce. And then I sat down to enjoy a glass of wine with Henning and Sebastian while I waited for the sugar syrup to brown. I paid no heed to a subtle warning from Henning, knowing that I had everything under control. Come on, I’ve made this dessert and this sauce at least five times before.
“Maia, something is boiling in the kitchen…”
“I know, it’s supposed to boil” *sips wine*
“Uhm, ok.” *worried look*
