New genetic test reveals source of cancers
A new genetic test can reveal the source of some mysterious cancers and lead to quicker treatment, Israeli researchers reported Sunday. Israel-based Rosetta Genomics said its test, still not perfected, uses microRNAs, a type of genetic material that regulates genes and known to be involved in cancer. Corporate researchers used the microRNAs to identify tumors that had spread in the body from unknown sources — a type of cancer known as "cancer of unknown primary" or CUP. Most cancers are named according to where they first develop — such as breast cancer or lung cancer or colon cancer. Even if these cancers spread, or metastasize, to the liver or brain or bones they are still identified by their primary origin. "But there is a group of patients who have tumors

Carb Intake, Obesity Tied to Rise in Esophageal Cancers
(HealthDay News) -- There may be a link between rising rates of carbohydrate intake and obesity and the increasing number of esophageal cancer cases in the United States, a new study says.Researchers noted that cases of esophageal cancer increased from 300,000 in 1973 to 2.1 million in 2001, which closely mirrors increases in carbohydrate intake and obesity over the same time.Obesity is a major risk factor for many types of cancer, and a diet high in calories from refined carbohydrates is a common contributor to obesity, the researchers noted. They also said no other studied nutrients were found to correlate with esophageal cancer rates."If we can reverse the trends in refined carbohydrate intake and obesity in the U.S., we may be able to reduce the incidence of esophageal cancer," study s

Many Prostate Cancers Will Not Need Treatment
One of the largest studies of its kind concludes that most older men with early prostate cancer do not shorten their survival odds if they adopt a "wait-and-see" approach to the disease. In fact, most such patients will die of other causes or they simply won't develop any complications from the cancer, the researchers found."Many elderly men with lower risk cancer may do well with conservative management," concluded study author Grace Lu-Yau, a cancer epidemiologist at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and an associate professor at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and School of Public Health."Each patient facing a treatment decision has to ask himself what is the potential survival benefit of various treatments and the potential side effects of various treatments, then compare thi

      Skin cancers
We all know that spending too much time in the sun is bad for us, and causes skin cancer. The same is true for our pets. Cats and dogs that like to lie in the warm sun are particularly prone, but other animals including horses can get them too. They typically appear on areas of skin that have little hair and little colour, such as the ears and noses of white cats and dogs or on the underbelly. Cancers on the underbelly can usually be removed fairly easily if they haven’t already spread, but cancers on the ears and nose are much more difficult to treat because there isn’t any loose skin there. Carcinomas on the ears usually mean that the ears need to be amputated, which is what happened today to the cat featured in these photos. Be warned, if you don’t think you can handle viewing images that contain a little bit of blood, then please don’t read on and remember to keep your pets out of the sun. (more…)

Adjusting PSA Scores For Obese Men Or Cancers May Be Missed
"Obese men have more blood circulating throughout their bodies than normal weight men, and as a result, the concentration of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood -- the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer -- can become diluted," said Stephen Freedland, M.D., a Duke urologist and senior researcher on the study.* "We've known for a while that obese men tend to have lower PSA scores than normal weight men, but our study really proposes a reason why this happens, and points to the need for an adjustment in the way we interpret PSA scores that will take body weight into account. If not, we may be missing a large number of cancers each year." read more

Fruit compound can fight some cancers
HONG KONG - Lupeol, a compound in fruits like mangoes, grapes and strawberries, appears to be effective in killing and curbing the spread of cancer cells in the head and neck, a study in Hong Kong has found. An experiment with mice showed lupeol worked most effectively with chemotherapy drugs and had almost no side effects, scientists at the University of Hong Kong said in a report published in the September issue of the journal Cancer Research. “It can suppress the movement of cancer cells and suppress their growth and it is found to be even more effective than conventional drugs (eg. cisplatin),” said Anthony Yuen, a professor at the University of Hong Kong’s surgery department. Gastric cancers are malignancies of the stomach
Causes Several different types of cancer can occur in the stomach. The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Because other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently, this article focuses on adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts think the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods, and increased vitamin C consumption. However, the incidence of adenocarcinoma in the high part of the stomach where it connects with the esophagus has increased markedly, along with an increase in

Vitamin D Won't Help Prevent Most Cancers
www.forbes.comHigh blood levels of vitamin D did not lower the overall cancer death rate in a long-term study, researchers report. However, they did note a marked reduction in colorectal cancer deaths linked to the vitamin. The findings, by a team from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, run counter to some earlier data suggesting that vitamin D might help prevent malignancy."Over the past several years, a number of publications have suggested that vitamin D can reduce deaths from various forms of cancer," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. "This is a further bit of evidence that leads us to call for further investigations before we make recommendations for the general population."Even the finding that the vitamin might lower colon cancer risk merits further study, added Lichtenfeld, who was not involved in the research. "We have called for further research to see if vitamin D does or does not reduce deaths from cancer," he said. "We d

Cancers Of The Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine - SEER Survival ...
Cancers of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine together account for a approximately 3% of the malignant neoplasms diagnosed in the United States each year. Ap- proximately 43,000 people were diagnosed with one of these cancers in 2006 (1). About one-third will be can- cer of the esophagus (14,550), one-half will be cancer of the stomach (22,280) and the remainder will be cancer of the small intestine (6,170) (1). However, because as a group they have relatively poor survival rates, these upper gastrointestinal cancers are responsible for about 4.7% of the annual U.S. cancer deaths, 26,270 estimated deaths in 2006 (1). In the 14 year period 1988-2001, the SEER Program re- corded 19,410 cancers of the esophagus, 39,623 stomach cancers and 6,879 malignant neoplasms of the small in- testine (including 2,202 carcinoids). The tables and text in this chapter address some of the patient characteristics (sex, race, and age) and tumor char- acteristics (tumor stage, grade, size, subsite

Novel Gene Suppresses Tumor Growth in Multiple Cancers
A novel gene was discovered recently that suppresses the growth of human tumors in a number of different cancers. The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, found that the gene HACE1, an acronym for HECT domain and ankyrin repeat containing, E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1, is able to help cells deal with various forms of stress that cause tumor formation (1). What is a ubiquitin protein ligase? Ubiquitin is a small protein consisting of only 76 amino acids. It is attached to other proteins by an enzyme called a protein ubiquitin ligase in a process known as ubiquitination. Ubiquitin acts as a marker that targets proteins for proteolysis (meaning cleavage of proteins by proteases, enzymes that degrade protein molecules). Ubiquitin is appropriately named since it is ubiquitious and present in essentially all cell types. The process of ubiquitination occurs in three steps: Ubiquitin is activated by an E1 ubiquitin-activating enzyme. Activated ubiquitin is transferred from E1 to

Lack of Sunshine Causes 600,000 Cancers a Year
A new study looking at the relationship between vitamin D serum levels and the risk of colon and breast cancer across the globe has estimated the number of cases of cancer that could be prevented each year if vitamin D3 levels met the target proposed by researchers. Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., cancer prevention specialist at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and colleagues estimate that 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D3, particularly in countries north of the equator. Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure of the skin to sunlight. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most serious of cancers.
Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which cancerous cells arise within the tissues of the pancreas that produce insulin and other hormones. Pancreatic cancer develops fast and is hardly detected in its beginning stages, which is a main reason why it's a primary cause of cancer death. Because pancreas is deep in the body, the disease is difficult to find in its beginning stages, and most patients have already developed tumors throughout the pancreas and beyond by the time they find the symptoms. Unluckily, there are no medical tests available for the early finding or diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Diagnosis is always given after the tumors have already spread beyond the pancreas.Treatment of pancreatic cancer concerns first about staging determining how much of the pancreas is catched and whether the tumors have developed. The treatment for patients with resectable pancreatic cancer is surgical removal of the tumors. But less than 15% of the time pancreatic cancer can be treated as rese

Canada continues to mine and export asbestos, despite rise in related cancers
Asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis are on the rise in Canada, yet the country continues to mine and export the deadly mineral. Canada is the second largest producer and exporter of asbestos worldwide, producing 200,000 tons of asbestos per year. Most of Canada’s asbestos is exported to third world countries with no regulatory systems in place to ensure the safe use of asbestos. Over 40 countries, including the EU, have banned asbestos.Asbestos mining occurs in Quebec, where the $97 million per year industry employs approximately 800 asbestos miners. Last year, the Canadian government introduced new regulations allowing for asbestos to be used in children’s toys, crayons, dry wall compounds and spray-on insulations.A motion has been introduced into the House of Commons to impose a ban on the mining, production, sale, use and export of asbestos in Canada. To read the full article, go to http://en.epochtimes.com.

To Your Health: Red Wine Reduces Rate of Abnormal Growths and Intestinal Tract Cancers
A study at the State University of New York at Stony Brook found that adults consuming at least three glasses of red wine per week reduced their chances of developing abnormal growths or tumors in the intestines by two-thirds.The researchers believe this may be linked to resveratrol, a compound that is found in higher amounts in red wine than white wine because the skins remain on the grape for much of the red wine making process. The study was conducted by Dr. Joseph C. Anderson and included 1,741 people. The study found a 9.9 percent incidence of colorectal neoplasia, cancers and polyps that can become cancerous among those that abstained from alcohol and an 8.8 percent rate among those who drank three glasses or more of white wine a week. Those who consumed at least three glasses of red wine a week had a 3.4 percent incidence rate, a 68 percent reduction.Dr. Anderson said he does not advise patients to drink.
