Imagine that the first day of every month, your website AUTOMATICALLY made a BIG pile of money. A whole bunch of orders came rushing through to fatten your bank account.
That’s what we call “recurring revenue”…which is sort of a fancy term for what a membership site will give you.
If you aren’t doing some type of [...]
In the face of the free-ware generation, copyright infringing masses, Microsoft corporation, the monolith of the 1980’s, and leader of the software licensing business model announced today that they are launching a subscription based model. This news begs the question:
Has the software industry, primarily Microsoft, seen the last days of price gouging through software licensing? [...]

From my field work, I learned that frequent repetition of business model innovation in the same company was an unintended discovery made simultaneously by dozens of companies in the 1990s. Each company was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of their first business model innovation. That success led them to want to repeat. From those repetitions [...]

I'm starting a new category of posts here called GroupThink. The basic premise of these posts is that there are certain topics that I think could make great discussions. So, I figured that we should have occasional posts on such topics (and then keep these posts in their own GroupThink section, just like Interviews). As an extra incentive, on every GroupThink post, I'll send over a Starbucks gift card to a random commentor one week after the post.Today's Topic: Websites That Monetize with AdvertisingBack before AdSense, monetizing a website usually meant trying to sell a product or service. Occasionally, you might get some direct advertising deals, but for the most part, the lack of advertisers and ad networks gave you few options. Then came AdSense, and advertising (through AdSense and ma
When you start a Home Based Business, it is very easy to get caught up in the emotion of the idea. Emotion is a wonderful thing and is the underlying factor of many success stories. However, it is critical for your success, to stop, step away from the emotion and evaluate the business model to determine if it is in line with your goals. You should find the business model most congruent with your "goals". If you have aggressive goals such as replacing your current income the first year or making a Million dollars within 2-3 years, these are attainable if you have the right business model. Or possibly, you just want to build something slowly and methodically and in a few years replace your income to leave your job or have extra retirement income. Any of these are attainable but depend on the
Is Network Marketing the Ideal Business Model?
It is often said that network marketing is the perfect business. It seems logical that many people in the business say this, since a statement like that could draw new people into the business. "This really is the perfect business!" could be just what your prospect needs to get the courage to make the decision and join your network marketing company. But is that all it is? Just a great statement to be used in an attempt to close people, or is there actually any truth to it? Of course not everybody shares this positive image of the industry. Many people think quite the opposite of network marketing. Busloads of people would laugh when someone would refer to it as "the perfect business' because they don't even consider it a business in the first place. They might still have the picture of a bunch of housewives gathering around the kitchen table to sell each other plastic cups and lingerie as a hobby. Obviously not everybody evaluat

Advertising won’t pay the bills for every web service forever. And there are many concerns that because customers are so used to everything being free, they’ll balk at subscription models. I think I’ve come up with what I think is a new business model for web services, in which users essentially earn paid account status.
On the same principle as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (possibly even integrating that service into yours), customers complete basic human insight tasks (“Is this a picture of a cat, or a picture of a dog?”) that assist you, your partners, or Mechanical Turk submitters in solving problems that need mass input. Instead of your customer earning money from completing those tasks, that money goes straight to you, and the customers ‘Progress/Power/Cool Bar/Meter/Gauge’ is ‘charged/filled/increased’ as they do more, until it reaches 100%, at which point they’ve earned a paid account for t

Wal-Mart’s announcement this week that it is forging ahead with banking services — despite having been denied a broad banking license due to lobbying by community banks — seemed to shock some in the financial services industry. It shouldn’t have. The company’s move is firmly in line with how it approaches new markets, but the approach is quite distinct from how US financial services firms have traditionally functioned.
Wal-Mart is circumventing its recent lobbying defeat by partnering with an array of third party firms, such as GE, to provide a wide array of services such as debit cards, low-cost check cashing, and money transfers. It will use its brick-and-mortar infrastructure to great effect, but will also leverage the convenience of banking while you shop and its reputation for offering excellent value (in a market where pricing can be more than a little opaque). The focus of its effort — for now — will be on the unbanked, including immigra
The KPN takeover was looming large over the Tiscali Wholesale Annual Partner (ISP customer) Day I was invited to speak at, last Thursday. OPTA (the Dutch NRA) has spoken supportively of NMa’s (the Dutch competition watchdog) approval of KPN buying Tiscali NL. Closing is expected this month.
I suppose KPN’s plans could be anywhere between fully dismantling Tiscali NL and maintaining it as a
I'd always presumed flickr was one of the web 2.0 sites that seemed to think it could somehow make money out of thin air. Then I was uploading some photos from the Random Pub Finder when I hit the site's 200 picture limit. Of course I can upgrade to a Pro account, but really it's not worth it for me. The only reason I was using flickr was to get some inbound links to the RPF and that isn't worth $24.95 a year. Because RPF's business model is non-existent...
According to Techcrunch, Google is now in talks to acquire SimplyHired.com, a job listing website that works by searching across many websites such as Craigslist and Wetfeet.com and aggregating all the results. Venturebeat also has a first-hand account of the breaking news.
According to these articles, SimplyHired recently raised $13.5M for a $40M post investment valuation from NewsCorp. I find this amazing because it seems the barriers to entry for an aggregating website are so low…the business model to me seems too simple. What if in a year a new security device comes out capable of blocking these aggregating/scraping sites from accessing their content?
Are sites like Craigslist.com really okay with their content being exploited on other sites? True, SimplyHired does ultimately send the person back to Craigslist.com but still, when your entire business model relies on someone else’s content it seems like a recipe for disaster…at least to me.

This post in response to a recent article at Helium. The author mistakenly believes traditional MLM is dead because of the Internet.No..the Internet did not kill the MLM business model. The MLM business model started dying years before the Internet became a viable sales, marketing and business building tool. What happened to so many MLM companies is that thousands of people in these business organizations stopped sponsoring and started recruiting. (See: How To Recruit & Sponsor Effectively)Sponsoring is not recruiting and recruiting is not sponsoring. Yet, so many well meaning people fail to comprehend the differences between these two activities. Effective sponsoring is no more or less than successfully connecting with people emotionally and intellectually, and in some cases spiritually. The primary reason so many people have difficulty sponsoring others is they confuse sponsoring with recruiting, or use the terms interchangeably. In order to completely understand why so many

About: CILIP's New Business Model Working Group
I was disappointed to find (according to the report in Gazette 11-24 August, page 3) that in their discussions to identify CILIP's core functions there appears to have been little or no consideration of possibilities, but only an agreement on the status quo - Regulate the LIS profession; Support LIS professional development; Provide advocacy.
Shouldn't such an important working group, working in a time of crisis for CILIP, have thought "outside the box' - considered new and exciting functions, which could both attract and retain members? I do not think members want a reaffirmation of more of the same in the new business model - the Terms of Reference make it clear that the model should generate income, not allow CILIP to carry on as it is.
If you agree with this statement, please make it known by emailing CILIP (info@cilip.org.uk) directly "For attention of the New Business Model Working Group"
