Over the last week or so Visa (V) stock has been on steady run up from about $60 to $90 – until the last 2 days of this week when it lost 7% of its value. I had bought some stock when it was $64 (just after the IPO) and was looking to buy some more based on how the stock performed. It off course performed very well and kept on going up. Security officials have extinguished the Olympic torch amid heavy protests during the relay in Paris. Due to China’s fuel crisis a crematorium was dumping half-burned corpses in a nearby ditch in order to save on diesel fuel costs, according to a Hong Kong newspaper on Friday.  The residents in Hengyang County noticed a bad smell coming from the crematorium and had people go and investigate. The South China Morning Post said that what they found was “crematorium workers putting half-burnt human remains and organs in plastic bags and throwing them into a nearby ditch.”  One of the village representatives, Xiao Gaoyi, said, “As the price of diesel rose, we saw more and more bags thrown out from the crematorium.” The reason is because China is suffering its worst fuel crisis in four years, resulting in about a 10% price increase in domestic gasoline and diesel fuel.  In many parts of China the fuel was rationed and resulted in long queues at some petrol stations. Seems like a number of the blogs I read everyday haven’t been updated in a while. They are probably burnt out with blogging or are pretty busy this time of the year. Lately, I’ve kind of been sporadic with my blogging as I try to catch up with my MBA coursework. Being on jaiku and twitter is a bad distraction too. I think I’m just mentally exhausted with the busy days and lack of sleep. Putting my feet up, being lazy and watching TV seems like a better option for now. I do have to make a conscious effort to post short snippets, quotes and references on my scrapbook instead. I feel like we left creme brulee a little short last Friday, so I thought we’d revisit with a short history and another delectable recipe. Creme brulee which means ‘burnt cream’ in French, is a dessert with a rich custard base topped with a layer of sugar which is then burned using a salamander and becomes a hard caramel. What an interesting dessert, who would have thunk this one up? We first see the recipe for creme brulee in Massialot’s cookbook in 1691 in France, however, Trinity College in Cambridge, England also lays claim to the origin of the sweet custard. They contend to be the first producer of the dessert in the 1600’s where they named it ‘Cambridge Burnt Cream’ or ‘Trinity Cream’ and have a special branding iron with the official college crest which is used to burn the sugar top. Sadly, this is the reality at many quiet spots across the country. Crewe is no different. Last week I read a letter in one of the local rags about walkways off Hungerford Road that had seen a massive increase in tipping. So I dug this snap out, taken about three weeks ago when I cycled around the edge of Coppenhall and through some of the old Leighton Park area. I didn't want to show this, as I'd always prefer to post images that put Crewe in a positive light. But that's impossible here or in any other town in the UK. The land pictured could be gorgeous. Behind roads like Frank Bott Avenue, Rolls Avenue and Windsor Avenue you find trees, large grassed areas and paths. Perfect for kids, great if you fancy a walk. Sadly, not when there are piles of rubbish dumped, old furniture broken up and the remains of multiple fires scattered across the area.
